Fun fact- the synth drums and bass were from a demo years ago before my computer got fried and I could only use them as an already bounced out compressed audio file. A lot of creative choices were actually because of that limitation, which I think is what makes things good!

I cannot get over how good this song is, the transition as Tom says "Give it to me straight doc, what do you see" not only feels natural but is also a surprising twist, and how he's now wearing the same sweater, or how when they disagree on the rorschach test, they aren't wearing the same outfit anymore, but immediately are again when they reconcile, the whispers of Speed 2 when we hear Brian's obsessions, which is payed off when of course, one of the rorschach tests reminds him of Speed 2, the insane overlappnig point where its clear both Tom and Brian have like, the exact same face structure.

I'm feeling a certain power dynamic going on here, but I'm not sure I can quite pin it down. Let me try anyway. 1. Tom doesn't give a fuck about the Rorschach patterns. From the beginning on he's playing Brian by telling him exactly what he wants to hear. He's basically reading Brian to answer what Brian would say. Tom is 100% certain of what he needs to say, playing Brian like a fiddle. 2. Brian is completely perplexed and wants to impress Tom. He went into the situation assuming to be the one in control, but the control was ripped from him when Tom is suddenly wearing the therapist's outfit. Brian is also trying to say what Tom is thinking, but he's coming from a completely different position. He is guessing, trying desperately to predict what Tom would say in order to keep Tom interested. Interestingly enough this means we never get any idea about what Tom is seeing in the patterns. Tom says what Brian sees and Brian says what he thinks Tom would see. Tom is not actually playing the Rorschach-game, he's just being a manipulative shit about it. 3. With the tree-scene, Tom is having a bit of a power trip. It has all been playing out exactly as he wanted so far. Brian thinks they are in perfect sync about what they see in the patterns. In fact he is so convinced of this that when Tom disagrees, Brian doubts his own perception. Remember that Brian starts out as a therapist and thus should know that there are no right or wrong answers to these tests. He just wishes so badly for Tom to be his soul mate, that instead of accepting that their perception might differ, he stops believing himself. As a comedic side fact the tree is the first instance of a pattern actually resembling what someone calls it. The pattern does look like a tree, making it even more absurd that Brian rejects his own perception here. 4. Eventually Tom realises that while he can keep toying with Brian, he does feel some deep connection after all. He decides to push his aloofness aside and go for connecting with Brian by sharing the same kind of weirdness. Again there is a matching change of clothes for the situation. They are now both wearing the same outfit, making them mutuals with no power imbalance. I'm not sure if this analysis is far too deep or not even remotely deep enough for this video, but I will assume the latter and tip my hat to this marvel of storytelling.

Another interpretation of the tree-scene came to my mind. Maybe Tom already feels the pull of actually connecting with Brian before during the scene where they exchange visions with the "Yes!" in between. Denying that he sees the tree would then be an attempt of distancing himself because excuse me, he didn't get into this to be emotional about it?! So he tries to push Brian away by arguing about the tree. This is underlined by him not even offering his own idea of what it looks like at the beginning. He just focuses on how he thinks Brian is wrong. Eventually as we all know he makes the decision pro meaningful connection and makes up for his "There is no tree"-attack by offering another interpretation of the pattern that immediately ties them together: "You and Me". What still irritates me a little is that for the rest of the video they don't interact anymore. They act alongside one another but there is no acknowledgement that they even share the same space anymore.
