My now ex-fiancé broke up with me for COD about five days before this dropped. The attitude was like... Depression and anxiety make it hard to think about the truth so I'll just ignore reality and game 18 hours a day. Ugh but my fiancée keeps trying to talk about "the budget" and "a car accident they were in" why can't you leave me alone, talking to you makes me remember I'm miserable and not trying to fix it!!! I had to stop work when I heard this and cry for 20 minutes because on top of the FOB album that just dropped which is THE millennial breakup album imho, this came behind and double tapped me

I was also broken up with after nine years in August for a communication breakdown, but even the thought of laughing about very bad mobile game ads with him (remember C***Wars? Popped up on putlockers for a year or so, the algorithm giving two gay men that one made me laugh and laugh) is still so hard that I had to put it away for a month after hearing it the first time Part of what makes the song so good is that it points out some real problems we had when we were together, but I would rather go back to than move on.. only now I feel like I *could* fix them, and it’s too late. unexpectedly heartbreaking

The line “you better have treated your better half better but you’re too sad” really punched me in the fucking teeth because I’d been letting myself fall into depression and had started letting my relationship sink in favour of feeling sorry for myself all day. There's a line my brain keeps coming back to, weeks after listening to this-- 'Cause you haven't tried in two years, so why start today?' It really struck me how concisely he's summed up the horrific trap your mind can fall into so easily. It was just so haunting to hear. In my case it's not a failing relationship, it's just the mental trap of depression, but. Damn. It really is like the awful little voice in your head that's convincing you to not bother trying.

i love when comedians who are usually known for having the most insane twists on a subject decide to play it as straight as possible, to great effect. like based on BDG's usual content it's so easy to expect this to devolve into a horror segment but no, he plays it completely straight and turns it into a song about the devastating heartbreak of a failing marriage. it kind of reminds me of Diane Morgan's Philomena Cunk skits where she usually has these insane nonsense responses to the subject matter that the experts discuss, but in that one segment where she talks to an expert who reveals that atomic bombs are actually in use, she starts crying and it's the most normal, sane response you should expect from someone, but because it's from Philomena it's played to really great effect

It's also one of the more robust tracks he's released in terms of instrumentation and arrangement, in contrast to some of his sparser older work. The fact that he can carry the melody with what sounds like a single-track vocal and zero or close to zero pitch correction is extremely impressive. It just speaks to the power of an earnest tone and clever lyrics.

2:21 I love this part the most, and one of my favorite additions is how "The Truth" is handled here. It just plainly says "The Truth" on two personal statements before switching to gaming analogies that are used to hide said truth. It progressively gets more personal and deep into the issue while simultaneously getting more vague and detached. It also just bangs severely, overall a fantastic piece of music.

@@elinquisidorperseverante6835 the first punchline IMO is the new after chorus lyric ''cause it will just break her heart..'' which reveals that 'The Game' has already become the issues of the strained relationship. I love the idea behind this song. It’s a recognition that for such an ad to actually work with that tagline, the man playing the game must live a deeply sad life. This is some Bo Burnham level deepness. The basic premise is dumb, low effort, scam 18+ ads, and yet the ads comes to life to reflect on the types of people that do play these games. I love how it slowly shifts into trying to pull you in with all its promised features and dirty secrets, but then becomes almost manipulative telling you that you've already crossed the line anyways, that you'll never repair your relationship. Framed another way this could almost be a genuinely dystopian song about a salesman pulling in another victim. And the fact it recontexualized the main line of the song "Don't tell your wife about this game", into a finished sentence "cus it will just break her heart" cuts deep into what it did to the guy. Also the metaphors at 2:40 are just perfect.

I know there's a mug on preorder with a design based on this, but I'd seriously love just a full poster of angel Brian. I'd say it's unfair that he looks so good in that outfit and hair, but I think if anyone deserves it, it's BDG.

Of course Brian can write another song that makes me laugh out loud and genuinely cry at the same time, all while wondering where he got that cute watering-can, and how many braid styles he tried before mastering that "perfectly dishevelled" look.

What song is this sort of based on? It's driving me nuts, because the tone and rhythm of the words sounds so familiar.

@@5Detective ngl it has less of a 90s love ballad and has a more Paul Simon-y vibe. the rhythm makes me think of "your smiling face"

I may not have told my wife about the game, but I told her about this song, and now we're both very sad for this couple while admiring BDG's stellar aesthetic outfits. Her favourite is the angel one.
