It's the frame data of the move on block. With the introduction of season 5 into the game, all of Balrog's dash straights got changed to be -4 frames on block.

@@gp381 For Balrog. Think of plus and minus/negative frames as an adjective. If a move is plus on block, that means the person who used that move is at an advantage of however many frames specified. Vice versa for minus. Most character's fastest move is a 3 or 4 frame normal, so while dash straight is technically unsafe on block, if Balrog spaces it correctly (which is incredibly easy to do now), most characters won't get a guaranteed punish because their fastest move won't reach.

Street fighter players I've noticed don't always know when there own character is at minus frames it's pretty weird. Easiest way to tell if your negative frames in a match is to bait out your opponent with mediums and see if they can ex out of it

I know exactly one character's frame data and it's Balrog precisely because he's my main. What I find even stranger is when I do get the Balrog mirror and I will demonstrate a proper punish in the match when my opponent is negative but then they let me get away with it if I put myself in the same position. Some of those dash punches Brian did were absolutely not spaced out perfectly and could have been hit with anything starting from a st. LP (longest reaching cancel possible 4F Balrog has). Probably into L dp, EX straight, L straight xx CA, but even just L straight is better than nothing.

if you're new to fighting games, the most basic explanation to frame data is negative = bad/positive = good if you're new to SFV tho, I think -4 makes the move punishable, and the dood actually punishes the first time

yeah, that's why it being -4 is so good. Spacing the dash punch to be safe is much easier than it used to be. Unless you're playing against Sakura. In that mu, you could be -4 on the other side of the screen and you wouldn't be safe.

They made the medium and heavy dash punches -4 to match the light version. They used to be fully punishable on block, so now they can be used in pressure.

The heavy dash punch from full screen can be neutral jump punished on reaction, there's a reason no one does that. A spaced light dash punch would probably catch you going into the air if you try to react but it's not an anti-air really. When trying to pick up a juggle after a V-skill > P during a combo the Balrog player has to wait a few frames on the next dash punch or it will whiff on the opponent if they're too high. The hitbox is around Balrog's shoulder/chest at maximum, so it's not an anti-air. I've seen it trade but only if the jump button is VERY deep. Random neutral jumping can be dangerous though. If your read is wrong, Balrog reacts correctly, and you land on a H. DP you can eat two EX dash straights for your trouble.
