*Bought a 500 for an ultralight rod. It's very smooth **enjoyable.fishing** recommend casts great. One odd thing- the bale wire is a bit heavy diameter in my opinion for a reel of this size. But a great purchase.*

Been fishing spinning reels all my life and this never occurred to me.🤦🏻‍♂️ I always closed the bail if I saw I was headed into a tree. B-Lat always teaching me something! 👊

B-Lat, You are correct. I stumbled on this one day in panic as my lure was headed where I did not want it to go and I used the palm of my other hand on the rim of the spool to slow it down. My lure landed where I wanted it to go and it looked like a Money Cast. I was so proud. When I realized what I had done I thought I am going to hang onto that it worked and felt great. I noticed you thumb with both hands on your baitcaster after you switch hands. Real neat. Thank you for your prior video. Very deep.

I can confirm panic is a quick teacher!!! Just bought my first rig and never used a spinning reel (or anything really) before. I started getting cocky how far I was bombing these casts almost across the canal. Shot one out so fast and immediately seen it was screaming towards a tree… straight and slightly elevated at maybe 30° angle, so out of shear clumsiness and panic my left hand started looking for something to do and I stopped it before it got too deep and managed to recover my lure. I run straight monofilament because of my poor knot skills. I have 15/lb P-Line braid but I’d say I was running a drop with 3-5/ft fluorocarbon leader shot how would I cast that? I thought if you get fluorocarbon into the braid it will ruin the spool or is that just me panicking again? 😂

I almost exclusively use spinning reels and I never thought out the thumb as my break. I just would flip the bail down to stop it. I must practice this technique you speak of. Thanks!

Truly love watching these videos. Haven’t fished in over 15 years and starting to enjoy fishing again. ESP with my kids. Of all the KZbin videos on fishing, B Lat videos are the only ones I will watch. I have gone back 3 years of video’s and have gone back to watch them all again today. Truly appreciate everything you do and support what you do. From your boys down at Fort Benning.

Sorry for that long message,B-Lat you make me very proud because where I come from in Baltimore city a lot and rather run the streets and get drunk and go crabbing or go out on a charter boat and spend $300 and not catch their own fish they’re trolling shoot and right out of the inner harbor here in Baltimore city it’s unreal but they won’t take you to catch rockfish it’s always catfish and perch

Awesome tip, another tip you can give is to use the little slit in the reel once you know the length, so you will always cast the same length afterwards

Just bought a Shimano Nasci 2500 and a Sellus 7.1 med/fast. I’ve only been fishing twice at the Erie Canal off an 11/ft elevated concrete dock type platform. I casted my whopper plopper like a 90mph fast ball (I’m 6’3 200) and noticed it heading straight but going upwards slightly right into a huge tree and subconsciously (out of shear panic really) did this?! I somehow only got the line caught on two small branches and actually worked it free after 5min or so. But I can confirm this definitely works! Only problem is fishing straight 6/lb monofilament (not confident in my knot tying yet for braid) over a two hour span of casting that Chinese 90mm whopper plopper it eventually weakened the line and the whopper plopper snapped on a cast. I’m confused on how much length I should be casting. I want to try a drop shot rig but with say a 8/lb fluorocarbon leader to 15/lb P-line braided wouldn’t that mess up my reel if took in some of that fluorocarbon into my braided spool?

I use my pointer finger on my rod holding hand to feather it. The same finger you use to hold the line when you’re casting. I also can close the bail with the same one finger.

The intro was hilarious. I saw a video the other day with a guy that held his line with his index finger on the spool instead of the rod. My fingers aren't long enough, so I am going to try this method. Makes a lot of sense.

I’m fairly new to the concept of feathering a spinning reel cast. I like that after feathering the cast, the left hand is in position to close the bail. I will try your method. Thanks for the demo!

Use this a lot steelhead and salmon fishing with bobber and drift setups to straighten out the rig when it lands so it doesn’t tangle from the helicopter effect you get when casting long leader double hook rigs we use in some cases .Works great for distance control too like you say when you wanna put it right up on some structure so I’ve quickly utilized it all my fishing. It’s just an instinctual thing now when I cast a spinning setup to feather the line mid cast and lay it out nicely when it lands. Helps keep hooks from tangling on spoons as well I think since the single hook we drop back with a swivel can wrap up around the spoon if you give too much slack in my experience.

Same idea, slightly different execution: instead of your free hand's thumb, extend your forefinger of your rod hand over the top of the reel. This forces the line to unspool past your finger as well which increases the tension, etc, etc. Never tried to stop a lure cold this way but I imagine it can be done, just a little awkward for those with larger hands. I wear 2x gloves and getting my forefinger bent down far enough is a little tricky on an ultralight, lol.

I have a similar technique. I cast right, so with my left hand, hold it out allowing the line coming off the spool to flutter against my left palm as I slowly bring that hand in to close the bail. I do like your method though and will have to give it a try. Going tomorrow morning! Excited with this being a full moon time and the fronts moving around. Planning on starting out with a weightless tube on the spinning rod and casting it along the rip wrap along the dam about 5 feet off shore. I hope there will be a slight breeze blowing into it. ... So excited. Not going to be able to sleep tonight! haha

Just for clarification purposes. I think the majority of people in the spinning reel world calls this feathering. And our usual method of feathering is using the top index finger of the hand (the same hand holding the rod) and slightly touching the line as it flys off just like what this man is doing with his thumb. Edit: of course use whatever is best and there is also more than one way to feather your reel. The index finger was how I was taught and I see majority of people feather their spinning reel. Here's a YT video showing how it's done - kzbin.info/www/bejne/pKGyqH2Go797rdE

Brian - thanks for the info. One curious question why do you have your reel handle on the left side on the spinning reel and on the baitcaster you reel on the right side. Never really understood this. Growing up without instruction I set my spinning reels handle on the rights side just like my baitcaster. I guess it is just preference?

You don’t had me go out and spend about 300 and some dollars on a Z man pouch KVD speed bag I bought a bunch of your Lewers and I’m a tell you this brother no sonar just in my kayak at one of my pressured lakes hi caught me nine Bass and three pickers on 10 pound test on the California worm and the copper truce and I didn’t think they were going to hit it because how big it was sticking up compared to the smaller ones TRD and believe it or not they started tearing these damn things up and I literally had one bass hooked through the nose and the back of the long worm on sprayed grass worm I had another little bass attached to that so when I scooped him in the net I hooked one and had one hooked on to the elastic Z man, sprayed grass flavor, B i’ve been watching you Edwin Evers and Matt Stephen and my fishing game went from power fission to finesse I wish there was a way I can send you a picture and link of what I’ve been doing I paid attention to you taking a skirt off I put me a hollow belly shed and put it on a buzz bait with the skirt off and I caught me a 4.9 small mouth technically you need to get a fishing rod or if you do have any that you would preferably tell me to use for a shaky head professional I want to use my bait caster I have a Corrado 200 HD 70 711 ratio with a Boyd Duckett tryied 7 foot three medium heavy micro eyelets what should I go for when it comes to I bought two different weights in your jig heads I got a Lotta respect for you I don’t even know you do besides watching you I read people very well to me I think you’re an amazing fisherman and when I seen you and your video when you won that money and I seen you buy alone a lawnmower well tracker and I will be honest with you to hear you say that you were very structured grown-up and well rounded around at home, that’s me I’m 42 years old I grew up in Baltimore city my whole life I didn’t come from the best family I was thankful that I made it into a foster home and my baseball coach took me in I had a four-year scholarship to go play baseball or soccer but mainly baseball and I chose to go back to the city and I run a plumbing business but I love fission and I’ve been into the best fission for the past eight years only bass and I’ve been twisted by three different people that really knew how to fish but didn’t know the realization of fission and now that I’ve been watching you guys and actually watching and listening see people don’t realize you can hear a lot but if you’re not listening you’re not learning and I watched you and your son I’ve been wacky Reagan and shaky head for the past month and I will see this with a true heart Z man baby goats the TRT ticklers and the crayfish when I swim them stop it and they stand straight up I never thought a little hook that Lil would work and it has and I want to get better I fish tournament like I told you and I do pretty good but after this pandemic and I almost lost my home I had to sell a lot of my good stuff just so I won’t lose my home and I don’t need nobody feeling sorry for me because I push I push and I push it just hurts when I see all these people out here it doesn’t break me it just makes me feel like if I had a father would things have been better but thank God for the social media networks that men like you can show other fathers make the effort make an extra step because yesterday for Easter me and my oldest son was probably one of the best Easters I had in four years I showed my son one time how to go from 3 o’clock to 1 o’clock let that bait falls you pop it again up to 12 o’clock and you take your ride back down to three same thing you were showing me Brian when you want to hear your videos and as he was on his second turn around of the reel and my baby landed to largemouth back to back on the same log that was laying parallel with the bank and my son did it believe it, we have a Lotta of exceptional people I just wish more will come out and have more affordable resources because there’s a lot of people in this country that fish and everybody’s trying to get rich instead of teach and show and try to teach even more so these kids and women can learn how to appreciate and that’s the biggest thing appreciation of someone else’s time thank you Brian sorry for such a long paragraph and book I’ve learned so much from you and I haven’t even been on a boat with you so that should tell you something with some people some can speak it and some can do it I can speak it and do it and I’m never discouraged, I only get upset when I see people not being happy when there’s nothing to be upset about that’s what I call privileged people and hearing you talk about how your father and you would tear scrubs up and replant and spread mulch I don’t believe you came from give me this give me that I really believe that you had a great set of parents and family that showed you values in life that’s what makes us who we are it’s not forget where we come from and not forget that values are still something in this world respect and honor I rather be respected then be rich
