B - I write the depth on the bait's belly with a fine-tip marker. Helps to remember. And I add an "S" if it's a suspending bait. An S10 is a bait that dives to 10' and suspends.

You are spot on about locations being tougher to catch em on squarebill. I can't get em to bite on squarebill in any of the rivers around me. They'll wear out top water lures and soft plastics but they rarely hit my squarebills unless I'm fishing lakes or ponds.

Great video. I learned what you mean about overshooting on depth. I fish from the bank in lakes that are max depth 6’. Realistically with inexperience using a baitcaster and having to cast in tight quarters more than likely I’m only fishing in like 2-4’ deep. I bought two squarebills in that 1-3’ and nothing. Bought one more thar dives 3-6’ took it out, switched to 12 lb test from 15 and third cast had one. I was able to feel the bottom and they do really back out of hang ups. Retrieve, pause, retrieve pause sweep. Fun way to fish.

It’s mainly because it has no stretch at all. Same line of thought as using a softer tip rod, you’re less likely to rip the hooks out with line that has some stretch to it. I use 30lb braid with crankbaits pretty often because I fish from the bank. If I get hung up on a limb or something I can usually drag the whole thing in and get my crankbait back.

Just finished watching your top 3 lures you don't use/like - you threw me when you said crankbait, but then this popped up after and it makes sense now. You very specifically meant deep diving crankbait, ironically specific depth is never mentioned when people say deep diving though. 10 ft? 20 ft? What's "deep"? Been a fan for years my man, before KZbin made fishing popular again. Algorithm is screwing you though, I couldn't find this 10 hour old video by searching for crankbait fishing - I had to add your name. Populated a bunch of old videos and some from lesser channels statistically speaking. Keep keepin it real my man, much love peace

It's usually the bill that hangs up/snags not the hooks. Early on I snapped line a bunch before I learned better how to run a crank. Once you realize they will basically back out of the snag, it makes it easier. And like B-Lat said throw some slack, or just stop reeling if it bogs down. Typically it will float back out Funny part is, I'd find the plug floating later on and get my lure back.

So a medium power moderate action good for 1.5 cranks or should I bump it up to a medium heavy moderate? I have a 7ft medium moderate with 15lb fluoro with a kast king baitcasting reel. Just looking for insight is all and sorry if it sounds dumb. I'm trying to learn how to learn how to use crankbaits first here on KZbin for awhile and then usually like to then go out after learning as much as possible to become more proficient.

Really enjoyed all the info B! I was wondering about the really deep crankbaits gear needed, I hear 7'6 medium heavy with a moderate action is need for DD 15 to 20 or could I use a 7'6 heavy fast rod since I can't find any 7'6 MH Moderate action in my local shops. What's you intake on the DD crankbaits gear needed?

I definitely have more hookups using a fiberglass rod when fishing crank baits. I use a 7’ 4” medium heavy/ moderate St Croix Legend Glass and switching to that rod made me start liking crank baits before that I lost nearly every fish I got to bite a crank bait

@michaelnewell54222 ай бұрын
It has to do with not pulling the hooks out of the fish’s mouth. First you want a rod with some give to it so you don’t over power and yank the treble hooks out when you get excited that you got a bite. Then you want your line to have some stretch for the same reason. Mono has the most stretch, fluoro has medium stretch, and braid has none at all. Given that Brian is a professional angler, he likely has an ideal cranking setup that covers all of these bases. If you have just one or two setups like most of us, look for a medium fast action rod that bends more towards the middle of the blank. Then spool up with braid and use leaders to match your technique. A long mono or fluoro leader paired with that rod and braid will work great. If you still lose a fish, then loosen your drag a bit so there is room for them to pull. I fish almost exclusively crankbaits and that’s what I use. I rarely lose fish and catch a ton. Hope that helps
