As a kayak angler, I have never encountered as many scary, big, entitled boaters in my life in no wake zones turning me into a human surfboard.You can't fix stupid! I just try to get away when anyone gets close. It's not worth the aggravation. I was thrown into a boat dock had my head split open throw against rocks,and my trolling motor was hung in huge rocks.the boater made a second pass a waved as I screamed Im bleeding ..I was shot yes shot at on a public lake by a homeowner who lived on the lake..I did call the police..and about 6 months later it happened again to another female kayak angler...I was at high-bridge a slow no wake zone draw bridge in flagler florida was dropped in the drink by a huge bayliner, but a very kind sailboater fished me out gathered my gear wrapped me in a blanket and fixed me a cup of coffee.Thanks Captain Bill.For the most part there are good kind sober boaters...its the one percent that are rude and careless ⛵️🚤🛥

A lake near my home is popular for fisherman, kayakers, and pleasure boaters. It gets pretty rough with boat wake and wind waves. Never fails, someone in a kayak gets killed every year because people don’t grasp that you can’t see what’s in the trough of a wave.

So had an experience I didn’t expect earlier this year. Had the privilege to be a boat official at an elite event. I was in a boat with an angler and it had been a real struggle that day for him. He made a run to a new area he pre-fished and started down a bank. Short time in the pocket and a well known angler entered to our starboard side which was the direction we were headed. The guy I was with, just lifted his trolling motor and went to another area. No conflict. I was proud of how he handled himself especially considering how the day was going. He commented when it happened under his voice but did the right thing. He wasn’t catching anything so took the high road.

Had our club president pass me on the trolling motor and start fishing 30 yards in front me down the same stretch. I found all my fish there the day prior and he didn’t scout at all, he just showed up and fished. I was sooooo pissed I put on the trailer a couple hours later because I was so aggravated I could focus on fishing. Trying to teach myself to not let somthing like that throw my game off and just learn to adapt and over come.

I was fishing from the bank this one time a year or so ago, and these guys in a boat for the college fishing team and these two kids pulled up on me fishing from the bank (while they had a nice bass boat with power poles and everything while I was fishing my old favorite medium heavy and a square bill,) and these kids starting chucking buzzbaits literally over the top of my line. So I just scoffed and packed up and went to a different spot.

I have found fishing etiquette has REALLY taken a nosedive since covid especially...it seems like the lockdowns brought in a whole new crowd (what I call "covid fishermen") and they did not grow up learning fishing/boating etiquette, or even outdoorsman etiquette in general and are genuinely clueless. This video perfectly describes the best way to handle it...if they are far away, I just let it go, but if close I just simply have a conversation...try to educate them without seeming like you are lecturing.

I'm strictly a shore angler. I have never been in a position to buy a boat and probably never will. I'm 63 and have been bass fishing since I was 14 years old. I didn't get serious about it until a Hawaiian gentleman took me under his wing when I was18. He taught me fishing techniques and etiquette. First thing he taught me was never step into someone's spot. Give them at least a 40 to 50 yards fan cast. First come first serve and there are no such thing as reservations. Some many people have favorite spots but they don't own the lake. In the past most people were very polite and respectful. Not anymore. They will step right on top of you, especially if you catch fish. And age doesn't matter anymore. I've had teenagers and old geezers such as myself encroach on me. Also boat anglers are very disrespectful to shore anglers. They will attack your area from off shore and move in. All in all we live in a world where entitlement runs rampant. I have been shocked that older adults are getting the same way. I don't see any cure for it. The good old days are gone and I fear will never return. What can you do but remain calm and try to enjoy your outing.

I was fishing Lake Toho in May this year with my grandson and Jordan Lee pulls up and starts fishing about 50yds from us. Close enough to where we could hear him talk to the camera man on the boat. We're like hello Jordan...Lake Toho is over 22,000 acres and here you are... Not gonna like were honestly kinda honored that he thought the spot we were fishing was a good one. And it was actually. We caught several 4 and 5 pounders. Never saw him catch anything.

Love this video. I grew up fishing both shore and boat fishing and learned etiquette from my father. Sometimes i have to remind myself that people who act horribly on the water most likely didnt have someone show them a better way. And a lot of the younger social media fishing channels use those confrontations for clickbait instead of a learning moment. Keep up the great content Brian!

Old school veteran gentleman always.He went out his way to help everyone especially on the water...I can still hear his laugh when I called him at his shop as I had hooked a very angry pelican by accident . The beast was beating me with his wings and trying to swallow my head of course Dad had to put me on speaker phone. I got a bunch of senior citizen men who help raise me give opinions...I finally got the beast unhooked to which it did what came naturally all over the bow of my yak..they still tell me about this 8 years later

Just last week my 4yo daughter and I were shore fishing sitting on a milk crate and some jackass and his teenage son came and stood to my right 2' away and 2' in front of us to the point where I couldn't cast upstream without hitting him with my rod and having our lines tangled. "Sir are you really going to fish there?" "Well this is where the fish usually are." "Don't you think you're kind of crowding us in here?. He walked away without saying anything. Never in my 30+ years fishing have I experienced this especially from a "grown" ass man.

People thinking they have rights to spots. I had a situation a guy was leaving a creek that we were coming in to fish. He said we muddied up the creek that he was literally leaving its truly mind blowing to me. On the River the fish are only in so many locations and people try to bully people out of areas and its really amazing people expect you to lay down in a tournament just because they stake claim to a place.

I had a guy try to fight me during a kid’s tournament. We went into a mouth of a creek that was 1.5 mile creek and the mouth is around 450 yards wide and maybe 900 yards deep before the creek. The kids were fishing the east side of the cove and we were working north to the creek. Another fisherman was in the creek with a Jon boat and fisherman jacka$$ came and poled down 20 feet from the creek fisherman. They said something and the Jon boat went into the creek. So my kids and I were fishing working north while jacka$$ was working his way south out to the main lake. We got to a point where we were directly lined up but still 150-200yards away from eachother in the water. My son’s partner caught a nice 4lb lmb. This guy big motors up to us and demands the fish that’s his cause we’re in his kids spot.. I laugh cause I thought he was joking and thanked him for screwing the spot running his motor. Ol boy got pissed and started running his mouth on how he will kick the sh!t out of me infront of my kids… i calmly asked him if this is how he wants to this to end while resting my forearm on my holstered pistol.. He hauled it out of there but noticed the Jon boat was beached. We made our way over to check on him when he said called the cops on jackass for threatening him over the spot.. that guy was picking on an elderly man fishing for crappie and red ears.

Always try to keep these types of interactions light hearted. Start up a genuine conversation…ask questions about what they’re fishing for and their rod/reel/lure setup. Consider telling a sincere and convincing story that allows them to reflect and decide for themselves they should leave…offer some genuine advice on locations of other good nearby fishing spots. If all this fails, be willing to negotiate…sometimes all it takes is a beer.

A good attitude goes a long way. The other day, I saw a point I wanted to fish. A boat was 100 yards away and pointed the opposite direction. He had a fish on and the wind blew him that way while he was landing it. He turned around and saw me and kindly explained his situation. I just motored to a different spot. He swung by later and thanked me.

If you’re on the water you will run into these situations, I’ve been in multiple situations like this and it’s just not worth the hassle. The lake is big enough that you can always find another spot . I’m just out trying to enjoy my time on the water and nothing will ruin your day like confrontation with someone. I think it’s best to just turn away to find another spot to fish .

For tackle storage solutions focused on fishing ponds, I’ve been using a backpack with four 3600 size boxes with hard baits, one 3700 size box for all of my soft baits, and two 3400 size boxes for all of my terminal tackle (hooks, jigs, weights etc). It’s a bit hefty, but it encompasses everything from ultralight to bait finesse to Texas rigs and everything in between. As long as you invest in a high quality backpack, it’s very doable, even for several hours at a time. Down sizing to something like a Plano sling pack with two 3600 size boxes and room for soft baits and terminal in additional pockets can work well also, especially if you plan on fishing for long periods of time. Whatever it is, no stranger is worth getting you upset. I had a situation where i fished a narrow cove (120 ft wide if that) was coming out trolling on one side and someone who was coming in started casting right at my boat. I just looked, smiled and said good luck. No use in yelling, getting upset and putting me in a bad mood at the next spot.

Tournament or not if its a public lake, and someone else is fishing an area that you "WANT" to fish and they were were there first, then your choice is to fish behind them, fish somewhere else. Or dont fish there at all, just because your a "PRO" DOESN'T GIVE YOU ANY SPECIAL PRIVILEGE .

They typically walk away, but when I’m done fishing their dock; I say Thank you verbally! The look on their face is priceless!

IMHO, either don't say anything OR if you do...go in very soft. I understand the advice of trying to determine if it is a mis-understanding/mistake or on purpose, but "Did you mean to cut me off", will get a negative reaction 9 time out of 10. Maybe that depends on the lake and the region of the country. I just say "how's it going?". Then someone has a chance to think, did I do something wrong? If it wasn't a mistake or mis-understand, its a lost cause. Also, my advice to people who make a living on the water....don't tell people what you want. Ask and ask really nicely. If you take your ego or entitlement out of it, your odd of getting what you want are much higher. If a guy is guiding or fishing a big tournament and asks nicely, I (and a lot of other people) like to help people out. That said, there is nothing more annoying than a tournament angler jumping my hole because he thinks what he is doing is inherently more important than my fishing.

Good video. This conversation transcends fishing and is important across all aspects of life. I’m old enough now to realize that there’s almost nothing worth fighting for other than your life or the life of your family. As we witness the deterioration of our society, we see people that have no other mode than constant “fight on.” They drive aggressive, they will cut you off in a line somewhere or jump in a parking spot you were waiting for, etc. etc. Of course that type of behavior is aggravating and can make you mad, but if you’re honest with yourself, you’re not going to be thinking about it five mins after it occurred UNLESS YOU CHOSE THE WRONG RESPONSE. You guys all decided hundreds of you would be on the same lake at the same time getting in all the good spots and expect us to just be okay with you rolling right up on us at freeway speeds but throw a fit when we go do the same. News flash-no one but you cares about your tournament and it’s just annoying to everyone using the lake. Fish the James river downtown Richmond area a lot. It will definitely test you on this subject. Best advice for a rough place is to keep your mouth shut-it ain't worth it. Like the old saying goes "If you're gonna be dumb you better be tough".

San Diego is notorious for A holes cutting off others. I usually use giant square bills. Most people dropshot the piss outta the lake. I just speed up my retrieve and pull em out right in front of them. Then work the bank around them and smile. The reaction to the situation is their problem now 😉😂

I am always verbally non confrontational when someone slides right in on top of me , i will calmly let them know that i have taken issue with their actions , and leave , but there has been a couple of times that someone has been a complete ass , and I have left in a childlike manner , power up and run right through where they are heading , turn around and power back through .

I find interesting how you will see many posting videos fishing around docks and tell the land owners that they "do not own the water". Yet those same guys will get upset when someone pulls in front of them 30 yards away and yell "you are in my spot". Etiquette has many different definitions across all fishermen. I have seen guys yelling at someone 100 yards away. I have seen tournament guys pull within casting distance and not state a thing. I have seen guys troll over shore fishermen lines. My question to you is what happens when your intentions is the same and there are fish there?

What gets me is when I'm fishing in a small creek/River and a boat is coming by me they slow down, not to an idle, but quarter throttle and their bow in the air. Or they slow down just in front of me. They actually think they are doing me a favor. I just smile and wave. the wake would have been smaller if they kept going. This happens in fresh and saltwater.

Especially for me being in a kayak, if a bigger boat sees me catching fish, they have no problem coming up & fishing right on top of you? I stay away from everyone. I love fishing. If i see someone head my way and i am on a hot spot . I will give it up and come back a later time . For one i dont want to show them ( if i am in a tournament) how i am catching the fish . If they figure it out more power to them. I was fishing a small point this past spring and it was loaded . A kayaker came by me . He was fishing a tournament. I was not . I gave him the point because it was the right thing to do. A few hours later i found another spot that was better than the point . Nobody owns the water. And how we handle ourself is what is most important. And yes there is rude poeple on the water . I am not going to let one of them ruin my day on the water . I dont get many anyway.
