If you don't make enough money then you don't have to file a tax return at all, and the government isn't supposed to disenfranchise you just because you didn't make enough money. Voter registration is handled by the states, not the Federal government, and the tax laws are as varied as the voter registration requirements.

As a Swiss I really do not understand the US-System of having to register to vote. Here ( and I assume in all of Europe) it works automatically: when you are born, you get registered as a new human being. One of the boxes that have to be ticked is the citizenship. When that human being turns 18 and is a Swiss national, he or she automatically gets the next ballot sent to their current adress - even to prison. And of course nearly everyone votes by mail. Voting days are always on sundays, so even in the old times farmers had it easy to vote after church. I think if asked nicely, our government would gladly send help to show the US how it could be done without this disgusting theatre that really is not worthy of a nation that claims to be the ‚greatest‘ democracy of the world 🙄🙄🙄🙄

Not quite, it’s an offence for not being marked off the electoral roll, you still have to take the voting papers, but you don’t have to put anything on it…we call it an informal vote. We don’t get a huge amount of informal votes. But if there is a mark or some way we at the electoral office know which party you are voting for, then it’s counted.

I have been urging friends around my area of Texas to make sure they are still registered. I voted last year and when I went to vote earlier this year in a run off...I found I wasn't registered! Thankfully, they have voter registration cards at the polling place & I re-registered and was able to vote afterwards. Craziness!
