When I was growing up, a lot of people at the church where I grew up actually used to agree with this. They did not want the government telling them how to worship and honor God. To the outside world, we looked "very picky" in our way of doing things and outside influences easily made us uncomfortable. Political motivation slowly kept creeping in and taking over unfortunately until, as a young adult, people would get badgered and berated because they "voted for that pro abort that wants to push gay lifestyle on everyone" and stuff like that. I was already "deconverting" due to other reasons but this made it easier for me and sped up the process, and this was in the 90s. It was nothing compared to the insanity going on now.
