This is what you tube should be about, a younger bricklayer hitting a problem with gauge and the more experienced bricklayers out there giving him advice and sharing their knowledge, 👍👍

100% mate..couldn't agree more. Like I said so happy I started making these little videos..not only do i enjoy it but getting everyone's view and different ways to overcome issues is valuable knowledge! Been on the trowel for 5 years I think now, still much to learn...everyday is a school day....especially with these sort of jobs. I feel building on sites, which I did for 4 years is so easy there isn't much thinking, once you know your head hights, joists and WP..and everything works guage for you. But when it comes to extensions you have to adapt and adjust your work to the existing which is a challenge in itself! Appreciate your comment and support as always Mark!😊😄 hope your well

Your right extensions are more challenging and worthwhile, and your prices should show that its not about laying a thousand bricks a day its about doing a good job and building yourself a Good reputation

Good stuff my man. I’m Irish and started bricklaying when I was 15. I’m 40 now and have been living in NY for the last 16 years. We used to build with 50mil insulation and leave a 50mm cavity. We’d build the backup block first and have a plastic star clip on the tie to pull the insulation tight to the block always kept behind the drip on the tie. I see you fill the cavity with rockwool insulation. We also used to have a return on all the jambs with vertical dpc and 25mm insulation to close the gap.

I always put a 65mm cut block first course so the ties fall towards the brick skin and by the time you get to plate the blockwork and brickwork are normally level 👍
@IzzytheBricky3 жыл бұрын
Good shout mate! Next time I have this problem..and I probably will..ill definitely do that! Really was a pain..even though the bricks kinda matched the house, the house had big bed joints....i thought I'd be able to get it with the blockwork but just couldn't...if all the lintles were on at the same hight as the two front ones it would have been better..but the customer wanted the side window to match the house. In the end it wasnt too bad and got over it..just about...like we do as bricklayers..spoke to to joiners today and the roof and wallplate went on alright..so couldn't have been too bad for a Sunday job😂👍 Cheers for the comment and tip Andy appreciate it🍻😊

So it look like the customer wants a copy of the neighbours porch extension? Bit of a bugger with those windows. I thought they would have taken out the existing UPVC porch doors and cladding rather than working over them??

No criticism, purely advice .... lintel is king , always measure down from your lintel height and work your gauge out before you start it will save you a lot of time and headaches. Anyone who says it’s never happened to them is lying . Every mistake is a lesson learned 🧱👍🏼
