BRICKLAYING...RUSTY ANGLE IRON REPLACEMENT WITH NEW GALVANISED LINTEL...PART 2

Bricklaying With Steve and Alex

Bricklaying With Steve and Alex

Күн бұрын

THIS WEEK WE REPLACE A 2ND OLD ANGLE IRON LINTEL WHICH IS RUST DAMAGED AND HAS "BLOWN". WE SWAP IT FOR A NEW GALVANISED ONE AND REPLACE THE CAVITY TRAY ABOVE IT TOO .
MANY HOUSES HAD THESE OLD POOR QUALITY STEEL ANGLE IRONS INTALLED IN THE 60S ,70S AND 80S AND NOW MANY HAVE DETERIORATED AND STARTED TO DAMAGE THE HOUSE BRICKWORK.
THE RUST STARTS WHEN THE LINTEL GETS WET FOR LONG PERIODS OF TIME . ONCE IT STARTS IT CANT BE STOPPED. THE RUST EXPANDS VERTICALLY AND EVENTUALLY LIFTS THE BRICKWORK ABOVE WHICH IN TURN OPENS UP CRACKS LETTING IN MORE WATER AND SPEEDING UP THE PROCESS.
ON THIS HOUSE THE BRICKS (LONDON TUDOR) WERE POOR QUALITY AND THE SAND AND CEMENT WAS TO WEAK TOO MEANING THE WHOLE WALL WAS VERY POROUS .
MANY PEOPLE SEE THE TELL TALE CRACKING AT EACH SIDE AT THE TOP OF A DOOR OR WINDOW AND JUST HAVE IT POINTED . ALL THIS DOES UNFORTUNATELY IS MAKE IT LOOK BETTER , ONLY REPLACING THE LINTEL WILL CURE THE PROBLEM
THIS LINTEL IS A BIT AWKWARD TO PROP AS WE WERE ON A SCAFFOLD. WE PUT THE ACROWS CLOSE TO THE VERTICAL SCAFFOLD TUBES FOR STRENGTH PLUS WE WERE ONLY PROPPING A SMALL PORTION OF THE PIKE ABOVE SO IT WASN'T TOO HEAVY .......ENJOY 👍🏽

Nice work Steve and Alex a few other things I do when replacing lintels are 1 - using arbortech AS170 saw with my FESTOOL MOBILE DUST EXTRACTOR cut out the bricks in one pieces so you can reuse them it's a lot faster cleaner then a disc cutter and a lot easier no silica dust flying all over the place then you're wasting time cleaning up all the dust afterwards as we say time is money but also health is number one to yourself and others around you 2 - steel lintels expand and contract in warm and cold weather as you know when I install new Steel lintels at the ends i use Miothene Joint Filler and then there is room for the expand and contract to take place and there will be no cracking in the wall you will have 100% peace of mind when you finish the job 3 - when installing a new cavity tray i turn up the ends I also brush a thin layer of black jack dpm on the front of the steel lintels and stick my Visqueen Polythene Damp Proof Course so it doesn't slip forward 4 - I always get the steel lintels two days before the jobs starts i will use anti corrosive red oxide paint and give them two coats then I know they are finished to my standards and not that of the steel fabricator nice to see you both taking pride in your work keep up the videos as I like to see them when I've got some spare time

The way you approached the job was just how I would have done it however, like a lot of houses constructed in the day with LBC Tudors I noticed that the original brickwork was laid frog down which is never structurally sound. When you put the bricks back did you also lay them frog down, I hope not. It is very unusual to see a wood Bessemer on the in leaf of a cavity wall but made your job a whole lot easier as it was in very good condition.

Just a quick question if you could answer please , i have an opening of 2.6m so i have bought a 3m keystone lintel from berrys , there was a guy replaceing lintels on my neighbours property and he saw the lintels in my yard , he said that they are the wrong ones and that it should be a steel angle of 8mm thickness ? Is this true or is this old style building , because to me i believe that the design and length of the upstand at the back should be more than adeqate for the job but hes put doubt in my mind , could you advise please and great videos as always

Its single skin aswell as the lintel for the inner wall is timber beam
@SteveAndAlexBuild
@SteveAndAlexBuild 2 жыл бұрын
If the house has an angle iron outside and a timber lintel inside then an angle iron is sufficient. The 8 mm steel angle irons rust fast unless you get it f galvanised. If the keystone lintels weren’t up to the job that couldn’t sell them. As long as it’s propped when you build over it it will be fine . We how the all the time good luck 🧱👍🏽

How's it going lads just reading one of the comments there about packing slate surely it's ok to have one or two places whit slate what do you think
@SteveAndAlexBuild
@SteveAndAlexBuild 6 жыл бұрын
Hi mark , I’ll only use slate if the brickwork has actually dropped and needs persuading back up a bit . Otherwise I prefer a tightly packed joint then acrows out straight away to let things settle and tighten up on the new mortar . There is a chance of bending these new flimsy lintels by packing slate in too tight . Each to their own though , that’s just our way 🧱👍🏼
@scoyle1750
@scoyle1750 6 жыл бұрын
The problem with slate in that situation is you are just pushing it through bed you are not pushing against anything so you are not packing it as there is a cavity unless you have a long bit and can push it side ways finger trowel the way forward drive it through joint and push sideways

DPC meant to be wider than the lintel to the next brick along. The left side of that was well short that will rot out again soon
@SteveAndAlexBuild
@SteveAndAlexBuild 3 жыл бұрын
Maybe if the lintel was exposed and we used the same angle iron but it wasn’t and the angle iron is galvanised so it won’t rot out again soon 🧱👍🏽
@E69apeTheMatrix420
@E69apeTheMatrix420 3 жыл бұрын
@@SteveAndAlexBuild 100mm past lintel is minimum regulation for DPC and weep holes at either side and every 450mm. You must know they are the regs and that was no good. DPC has to go past the lintel or water will seep underneath. Galvanised still rusts with standing water unfortunately the cold ice gets to it pretty good. We both know I'm rite. But your not bad at your job I just think that was a bad excuse and oversight not to put it past the lintel you know.

In general, how much does it cost a homeowner to have a single steel lintel replaced? This is happening to a couple of my home's lintels. I'm a little scared of the bill I'm going to receive. Thanks.
