With every other character in the game, if you mess up against them, you'll eat a good 20% to maybe 50%, or possibly die if they have a good 50/50 and you're at a high enough % With Bayo, if you mess up once, you get carried to the blast zone regardless of whether you're at 0% or not, no other character can do this, and "just SDI" isn't good enough if top players are consistently getting 3-0'd by panic Bayos. There's a difference between a character being powerful and a character being broken. Mario is powerful, Fox, Marth and Mewtwo are powerful. Bayonetta is broken. How much longer is this going to continue before people just admit this character is not actually balanced?

Forewarning, this comment contains a lot of opinon. There's also a lot of writing. I feel that competitive smash should be both picking the character you want to play and having fun. What I believe the core problem is with practically every fighting game ever is that when it comes to winning you pick the best. Why have fun with your character when you can pick the best characters and win? With big money on the line it's no surprise that results are the only things that really matter. Bayonetta is a character that fulfills both having fun and results. She's fast, has a lot of options, can combo any character at any time and makes the opponent scared to fight you which in turn gives her more stage to own. That's the result part. The fun part is how *relatively* easy she is to use. Side-b, up-b, side-b, up-b and up-air. You don't need to do a lot of planning or thinking to get the kill. People get a similar feeling when they slaughter thousands of foes in Dynasty Warriors. It's invigorating. *You* are the unstoppable force that others have to work so much harder to win. The knowledge that one miss-step can literally remove a stock at any percent and even if Bayonetta gets knocked off the stage she easily gets back no matter what is fun. That's a problem. In a fighting game where it's you and your pals just duking it out for fun or in a competitive scene, no one should ever be in control of a 'god' character. It ruins a fun game on any level. Bayonetta has so many strengths that have no real answer to. There are many videos that showcase how abusive her options are, this video included but the main points of focus are on her specials and overall movement. Her up-b is the real issue. Regardless of how anyone feels, what makes nearly everyone groan is seeing a Bayonetta land an up-b. It hits around her, combos into practically anything she wants and is very hard to escape from. Side-b is a very effective movement tool and the prime way to get an opponent into the up-b. It gets angles up or down in the air, is hard to punish in both cases and when used on the ground it can it once or twice depending on if you hold the button or not. Down-b is the least offensive out of all of her moves. Yes, it's bad. It freezes you for a long time. Quickly spamming the moves causes it to get weaker, we know this. At max use, it can net you a kill by charging a smash attack or wracking up damage to go into the up-b. It's a really good counter, like Corrin's or Roy's. While not the worst out of all her moves, it's still a massively good move to net kills easily. Neutral b is iffy at best. It's not worth mentioning. The only other complaints I have with her moves are her neutral air, down air and dodge. Neutral air continues for way to long and murders people getting back to the ledge, down air's spike is too good and her dodge is also a combo breaker. It gives her an unfair advantage against everyone. "Why don't you git gud? Learn the matchup. Just SDI." In order, 'git gud' is a terrible response. "Why can't you do well on a test? Git gud lol." That doesn't help move the conversation along about how to effectively get better. Well getting good comes with practice. Even then there are things that with enough practice one can not over come. Try using Jigglypuff, Little Mac or Gannondorf to beat Bayonetta. At a high level it won't happen. It doesn't matter if you master those characters, they do not do well against Bayonetta. Almost all charaters don't do good against Bayonetta except for a few which is debatable. "Learn the match up." Baiting only goes so far. Most characters can not deal with her up-b or down-b. As in, they can't really counter it. Projectile characters can partially neuter her down-b but even projectile characters have to get close to close a stock. "Just SDI." Beefy Smash Doods made a few videos on the subject so I will leave it to them to do all the nitty gritty explaining. The brief summery is that SDI-ing Bayonetta up-b is hard. even with amazing SDI Bayonetta can react to it easily. SDI low and bayonetta can wait a tad to hit you. SDI up and she'll just up-b faster. It's a lose-lose situation for the opponent. What really is hurting the community is the divide between what the players want and what the audience wants. Players want to win. There's money on the line and with how stressful it is to consistently do well it's a no brainer that people want to pick top tiers. The audience wants to be entertained. That's a boring cop-out response but it's true. I've stopped watching Melee because I got sick of seeing the same 3 character being played over and over. The same has happened with Smash 4. Bayonetta, Diddy Kong, Cloud, Rosalina and Luma, all these characters aren't interesting to watch. Bayonetta has been discussed. Diddy Kong abuses the banana and frame data, Cloud abuses Limit and godly frame data, Rosalina has jank and Luma. That's not interesting to watch. Little Mac is an interesting character because he has limitations that he has to plan around. Ness, Lucas, Luchina, Duck Hunt, Pac-Man, ROB, most of the cast is interesting to watch because they have limitations that must be worked around. It's exciting to see how players use their mains and turn the tide by doing things unconventionally. Watching Bowser Jr. use his kit is far more enthralling to watch. Bowser Jr. has no real strengths or weaknesses. Whether or not you support a ban is up to yourself. I for one do not want to see Smash 4 die out as soon as Smash 5 comes out, if it is indeed a new game. I want this game to survive for long after the release of Smash 5. Personally I would ban Bayonetta. "But if you ban Bayonetta people will want to ban Cloud. Then Diddy Kong, all the way until Jigglypuff." Bans should only be used when something is overpowering the meta. Bayonetta is getting more players. The counter to Bayonetta is Bayonetta. That's bad. Whether or not Cloud deserves a ban is another debate. Bayonetta is not that fun to watch and she takes the fun out of the game for most people. This is all my opinion and I only speak only of my opinion.

BrightHeart 2324 I completely agree. Yes, Bayonetta is a good character--probably the best in the game. And yes, she has her weaknesses (those being her large amount to of cooldown on her smash attacks, down air, side-b on stage, bad roll, and landing lag). I find Bayonetta a pain to fight. But I also find Sonic, Pac-Man, Ness, and Falco a pain. The difference between them is that Bayonetta has nowhere near as many weaknesses as the rest. I've beaten Bayonetta players before. I've also got beat by some too. There IS skill required to master a character, but it takes MUCH more skill to master some more technical characters such as Pac-Man (because of his item game and hydrant mechanics) or Wario (F-air jab locks, bike mechanics, and Waft setups) as opposed to Bayonetta or Cloud, who are low-risk high-reward characters. Do I favor banning Bayonetta? I'm not completely sure. I don't main her, and I hardly ever play her. So banning her would not make even the slightest intention on me.

My favorite part about these Bayonetta videos is that 75% of the time the casters of any given match can't quite bring themselves to hype or properly compliment the combo that just occured. It's as if they about it themselves. Any time I see someone mention SDI I am reminded of the times people used to say "Just air dodge." The people getting comboed are professionals with thousands of hours in the game so I can't help but feel they know what DI is. Can't wait for ultimate.

I don't even play smash and watching this character makes me squeamish. I literally commented on another vid about how simply easy it is for her to kill. Some guy defended her by saying she had (some kind of build up? Or power up?) Some shit like that.. So I just took it, but watching that clip where the game literally JUST starts and she just does her combo and you're in the sky and get blown up? No, I'm callin bullshit. And don't even bring up how easy it is for other characters to kill, I've seen them.. Bayo is the most FREE out of all of them. If I were to nerf Bayonetta, I would nerf how far her combo can carry before % reaches a certain point. She's literally killing at start 0% off one combo, which you MAY or MAY NOT be able to escape, even if you tech correctly. Obviously Bayo is beatable, but so is 12-Star Akuma from Tekken 7 on hardest difficulty. You can win with skill, but the CPU is tough because of its moveset, not its own skill. Bayo is just like that, except worse because people 'with' skill choose to use her. Skill + Cheap ass moveset = nigh-unstoppable.. Only beatable by people with greater skill and tactical thinking outside the box on freakin genius level and calculation..aka might as well be a prodigy or capable of holding your own with best of the best in the game.

Darcy Auguste you're missing the point. Playing ANY character like trash and you're gonna lose regardless unless you have dumb luck on your side. "she's not easy to play" is not a valid argument. The problem is what she can do once you know what to do..and have practiced doing it, like ANY other character and there combos. she's not the hardest character to learn, and the hardest character to learn CAN'T do what she does as easily. I'm not talking about specific tedious situations, the clip I watched so far, at the start of the match, all it takes is for you to be IN THE AIR and its over. Whether she takes you to air first or not. You're getting blown up. Even if you escape the combo somehow, she can just do it again(like the guy did).. Then youre definitely blown up.

Leo and Tweek only became Bayo players towards the VERY end and weren’t carried obviously because we know both of them are incredible. Chag is still carried by Palutena just like he was with Bayonetta. Abadango is pretty skilled though as he was a great Mewtwo and Wario player in 4. As for the last couple of names, it’s mostly true except Lima since he still plays in Ultimate but the others were 100% carried since they haven’t done jack shit without her.

As far as the bayo ban in 4, I don't think it will make a difference at this point, the game is gonna go away when ultimate comes around, but the toxicity wasnt a small thing, it's been a large part of 4 for the past 2-3 years, and I'm saying looking back a lot of that may have just gone away if more people banned her from the start like Spain did. We ban stages as the game progresses, because of things like imbalance: a stage like duck hunt may seem normal to a lot of players, but if you use little mac your opponent can just hang up in the tree and you cant approach at all. Out of 60 characters I dont think banning 1 or even 2 is the worst thing if it betters the community.

It's kinda sad to see the community after one character addition. One side loathes Bayo for her low-risk high-reward gameplay that got newer players or even veterans to skyrocket in terms of 'skill' or wins and wish to see her nerfed into the ground or banned all together considering pocket picks are everywhere for the casual in tourneys who just wants to win. And then there are the Bayo players themselves, with the casual/'competitive' players feeding their egos off of other people's upset opinions and just riding the salt train trying to be 'that guy' and saying one liner responses to either rile them up or attempt to defend their character. Everything's just gone down a toxic hole of unhappiness and debate over a single DLC character. People on both sides can enjoy their opinions, I just hope things get sorted out eventually to stop the fighting and boring cut'n'paste competitive scenes. If you're looking for me I'll be that one DeDeDe on For Glory that most likely chokes most attempts at finishing a game xP

I remember when watching sm4sh tournaments was fun. I would get to see variety in the matches, with some different characters in the top 8 that kept things interesting. I remember the simpler times of Larry Lurr, Ally, ZeRo, and MKLeo's Marth phase. I remember watching Frostbite, seeing the Kameme upset on ZeRo, the Tsu vs ZeRo match. I remember watching Anti vs Zinoto in CEO and saying to myself "I'm proud to be apart of this community. Our esports matches are all fun to watch and are a true testament to the players' skill." I remember when every match was a guessing game of who would win and what characters they would play. EVO 2017 was when I started to watch less and less sm4sh tournaments. Seeing a bayo get the win was a clear sign to me that more and more random people would start picking her up just to get to the top quick. I respect Salem, and he is a damn good player. However, all of a sudden lots of random bayo 1-tricks started popping up in tournaments and placing really high. A month or so later, and all I saw were bayo players in the top 8s. No more were the days of fun, interesting and varied tournament play with fun and cool-to-watch highlights from all levels of play. Gone were the days of PrinceRamen vs ZeRo and seeing low-tier upsets (except for the occasional upset, which was rare anyway and resulted in a win even rarer). Now all I see are annoying bayonetta players who are absolutely full of themselves and only ever play bayonetta. I would respect people like Lima and Mistake if they ever played anyone else, and yet they don't. The game has become too saturated with bayonetta 1-tricks, and in that regard I am glad it is going to be replaced by Smash 5 and I can only hope bayonetta is nerfed or the 1-tricks leave the scene.

It’s sad how ass these bayos are in ultimate. Captain zack had to switch to daisy and actually did decent in genesis but got super low at frostbite, Salem had to switch off bayo to link and got dropped by liquid, and Lima isn’t even close to relevant anymore

Loïc Patry-Vincent I don’t think it’s Bayo’s fault entirely. It can also be dying due to unnecessary junk with rage and the game rewarding more defensive plays. Ultimate so far has fixed Sm4sh biggest problems but I fear that the smoke and balloon knockback might be really bad

I never downloaded bayo, but Jesus she looks so broken. Like wtf is that upward set of kicks that she can do like 3 times followed by that butterfly thing like, damn it does a shit ton of damage, carries them to star ko, and gives her an extremely unfair recovery. Not to mention being able to slow people down with the purple thing.
