Evo 2018's Smash 4 grand finals were the worst in Evo history.
From the audience, it looked like two friends making a mockery of the biggest tournament of the year
But if you knew the backstory, you knew that it was the culmination of years of hate thrown at them. But they weren’t hated because they were trash talkers or community villains. They were hated because they played Bayonetta.
They picked a top tier because they wanted to win. Instead, their character tore the community apart.

Two takes: One, it's less that a character ruined the game, and more that... a very immature and toxic community threw a collective temper tantrum (which is sadly common for the more "vocal" Nintendo stans, from what I've seen). Welllll tbh I can relate a lot because the same thing happened to OW and Brig. Brig broke the game... viewership dropped and people left and the community was frustrated for a year and a half while Blizzard figured out what to do about goats. There’s a difference between one character winning all the time, and one player winning all the time. Joker is a top tier character, but you don’t see every joker player winning every tournament. But any pro that was never even close to getting in winners finals could pick up bayonetta and just dominate every game. That’s why players like Lima and captain zack got to grand finals but wouldn’t get so lucky in ultimate when bayo was not the same as in smash 4.

There were a lot of people who wanted her banned at the time, but there were also a lot of people defending the character so she never got banned. Some of the main arguments against banning included: - You can SDI out of her combos (she can still kill you if she reads your SDI and at the very least you still take a lot of damage) - Statistically speaking, she didn't have super high representation or enough placements to warrant a ban (At local/regional levels, there were other characters with similar if not better usage rates. Wasn't super dominant at top level for a long time, and by the time she started to become noticably dominant it was already too late) - Brawl Meta Knight didn't get banned, and he was much more OP (he was going to get banned, but the only reason that didn't happen was because all the top players who played Meta Knight threatened to boycott tournaments that banned him) Nowadays the consensus is that she should have been banned (even most of her then-defenders agree), but at the time it was a very contentious topic. It is really interesting to see though, since there are a lot of parallels with Smash 4 Bayo and the current trajectory of Steve in Smash Ultimate. Hopefully history doesn't repeat itself

It's always an interesting discussion when a character is very powerful in a game. Many people will argue that characters carry players and this is rarely the case as most of the times those players have put in insane time practicing matchups to make it work. A more recent version of this is Leroy for Tekken 7 in Evo Japan 2020. All the top players who refused to play Leroy got beat. This resulted in a Top 8 with 6 Leroy players. I don't think any of the former champions and usual favorites got to Top 8. And the champion ended up being a Leroy player of course. When he won he said "pick Leroy". From what I remember, people were more angry at the Devs than the players. The players didn't get much hate, probably because there was so many of them.

I played super smash bros for the 3DS almost exclusively in offline mode against Level 9 cpus using the traditional 2 stock format. When I finally got my hands on the DLC it was quite clear to me playtesting here just how powerful bayonetta got with chaining attacks one after another. Made up characters are usually the game developer’s own idea about their own ip characters so it’s usually balanced after many tests. Some people seem to forget, the community comes for action. Imagine going to a boxing fight where brass knuckles are not prohibited. Someone can easily win and there is technically still action if 2 people use brass knuckles, but it's not the boxing match you went for. @@hayabuzon8219 Despite the brokenness of Meta Knight in Brawl, Bayo would probably win due to Smash 4's faster gameplay and Bayo's absurd combos. Meta Knight would be better on larger maps in comparison to Bayo, though, due to his near infinite recovery.

@@perplexity8260 I actually barely touched Bayo in Sm4sh because: 1) I played mostly on 3DS, which I didnt want to risk breaking the control stick over playing one character. 2) She didnt seem very appealing at all. 3) Sm4sh is a very defensive game, which I mostly preferred playing characters like Palutena, Zelda, and Marth. That isnt to say Bayo was fair. It's clear that they changed her combos in Ultimate to the point where the slightest DI will affect them. The problem is that Bayo doesnt have anything else to compensate for. She only has combos. When you remove a combo character's ability to combo well, they're not going to excel.

Because there was counterplay. Bayonetta was strong sure but She did have a few unfavourable matchups being Cloud,Diddy and Rosalina as an example. If the whole game was just Pick Bayonetta or you lose then there would’ve been a major ban towards the character. Like Hero in Ultimate he wasn’t banned because he was mid tier at best.

To think that this could have been avoided: Source Gaming found that Bayonetta's code was already in Smash 4 PRIOR to the Smash Ballot, the main event in which Nintendo announced the character as the most voted (Etika reacted to this, and I saw that). If Nintendo, Sora Ltm, Sega, or Sakurai decided to put another character as one of the last DLC fighters, perhaps the true winner of the Smash Ballot, then the outrage, salt, and hatred could have been potentially mitigated. :(
