Later that evening I cross referenced the Star Wars prices and discovered that the sets were discounted. Unlike the other sets, the discounts were not marked on the shelf. With that said, very few sets were actually 25% off. They mostly ranged from about 10-20% off. This is very misleading. You should not have to research every single price to determine whether or not the discount is legitimate.
@andrewphillips57712 күн бұрын
I was there yesterday man!!! And I almost bought like 4 sets, and then cross referenced with online, and it was not a big deal! That's crazy, we had the exact experience

It's cause of how Bane Capital bought out Toys R Us. They used the future profits of Toys R Us to secure the loan to buy them out. In order to make it work they jacked up the prices of everything in their stores, and that's what primarily lead to the death of it in the US, since you had more reasonable competitors in Target and Wal-Mart.
@tonihall78102 күн бұрын
The best part about a white board is when you get to wipe off something you have done. Great sense of achievement. There is an online store that offers huge discounts because their t shirts are “normally “ $85. And now with 95% off they are only $6 etc . Hmm yep they are cheap and nasty . lol tfs

There are a couple of retailers (department stores) here is Australia who do the exact same thing. It always pays to research the actual RRPs, so you don’t fall for their shenanigans!!

The fake sales are really nasty. And the prices in Canada are really high, even higher than here in Germany it seems.
@Oz-Rein2 күн бұрын
They're not really fake sales, their normal prices are just that high. Any sales they do just bring their prices back down to msrp (or thereabouts). Either way, it is a poor marketing strategy for sure.

MSRP is literally "suggested" price.. retailers can charge more if they want. However, if a particular retail continues to charge above MSRP it will often drive away business when customers compare prices.
@craftyhobbit76232 күн бұрын
Toys R Us went bust in the UK a few years back. They have reopened for sales online here but they don't have physical stores anymore. If they operated the same business model here (I don't have kids so don't shop for toys often), it's easy to see why.
@ManSplaining12 сағат бұрын
The issue is they only raise the regular price when there is a sale. Once the sale is over, the suggested price will come back down. This is a deceptive practice for a retailer.
@kellbell88662 күн бұрын
That's a real bummer about Toys R Us. I agree that it seems like a scam. I know it is allowed, but just shady business. I'm excited to see what you guys do with that train area and zoo this week. It is all looking so good!

This is a good lesson to learn before Black Friday. If there are some items you want to buy, look up the prices before the sales begin so you know if it's a deal or not. Amazon is notorious for doing this during Prime Days or Black Friday. They mark things up and then put them on sale.
@its_Santini2 күн бұрын
This is the exact thing that Toys R Us used to do in the US. Inflate prices, then advertise discounts that made them suggested retail price. Always felt like a scam to me.
@thorn05812 күн бұрын
Brick and mortar stores always have to factor in the cost of keeping the building up and running into their pricing. The other thing is that specialty stores need profits and can't do deep discounts like bigger chain stores. I once listened to a Suncoast Video employee explain to a customer why Walmart can sell a DVD for 17 bucks while they charged 25. Walmart has such a huge offering of products that it doesn't need to hike costs on the stuff the sell. Small niche stores have to cover costs and so can't afford lower prices. It's what's slowly killing retail and shopping malls.
@rickyma31892 күн бұрын
Business like Walmart and Costco have scale, they can buy 100,000 units for all their stores.
@thorn05812 күн бұрын
@rickyma3189 yep they have the luxury of discounting stuff and still making a profit. While the specialty stores like toy stores are only selling toys.

One of the reasons why I tend to buy direct from the Lego website is to avoid over-paying above the rrp. It has to be the same, or less for me to buy from other places. Having said that, I did manage to snag a few good deals. Be cautious.
@crmodela2 күн бұрын
Toys R Us in Canada used to have better pricing, same as other stores or slightly higher. If I remember correctly I think 1-2 years ago they started rising prices more aggresively to the point where we are today where some of the prices are just ridiculous. Thank you so much Bricksie for giving more visibility to this issue! I've also noticed the TRU decline in Bricktober offers. Miss the days when we had a different collection of a few minifigures nicely packaged every week, nowadays their Bricktober offers (if they have them) are so lame. I used to buy a lot of Lego from them, now I rarely buy anything because of their absurd prices. I hope they react soon for the better, otherwise we've seen this story before and it doesn’t have a happy ending.
@dragunz84602 күн бұрын
I know in the states, marking up an item and then selling it at that inflated price as the "regular" price is generally considered illegal under deceptive pricing practices, as it misleads consumers about the actual price of the product. Under the FTC act.

You want to see crazy, look at their prices for action figures online. I think most shoppers today, especially collectors, are way too savvy to be taken by these tactics. Like you did with your phone, it takes 2 seconds to check other stores. I know the prices of sets I want so when I see them up on websites I know when I'm being gouged without even checking but I'll do it for sets on sale still.

Thanks for calling out TRU. I notice their markup on lego earlier this year with the new SW battle droid battle pack. Like you said they do have some deals and you must research Lego msrp. I did find the 3 in 1 creator castle it is $5 more that msrp and after the discount i thought it was an okay deal. I figured I wouldn't get another chance to buy it on discount and want to combine it with my other one and make one of thr rebrickables. Awesome content Bricksie!

They up the price by 25% and have 20% off which is the retail. For example, Lego 76432’s retail price is $39.99 in CAD. $39.99 x 1.25 = $50 then $50 x 0.8 = $40! What a magic! It’s $29.85 at Walmart right now. The business is going down soon!

We have a local ToysRus in Gatineau as well and the Lego sets are ALWAYS about $10 more than you can get them for on the LEGO website. It's discouraging and makes me concerned about the retailer's future, give me a reason to support my local store!!! That's not something you can do in 2024 when it's easy to check out Walmart or Lego store. We've limited to buying LEGO there only when its gifts for our kids friends or when there's an ACTUAL sale on.

Toys R Us has increased their prices across the board. They're often $5 to $10 (or more) above msrp on all sorts of items: action figures, lego, you name it. They've lost any sort of competitiveness in the market. I doubt they'll last much longer in Canada unless they rethink their strategy.
