Thanks for talking about this! So often I see both brides and bridesmaids who think that pulling the shoulders up will solve this problem, but they fail to notice that it looks like their bust is under their chins! It is critical that the bust fits into the bust of the dress if you want a gown to really look good. For tall brides this can be really tough! I have extended shoulders with almost anything you can think of- once I even finished the shoulders separated and added rows of beads to extend them! I think knowing how and when to change the waist position is the difference between a pro and an amateur.

I'm experiencing this with my seamstress now actually. I found a dress that was "previously loved" for $20!! It was 2 sizes bigger according to the tag but someone had altered it down. It sits too high, causing the bust to be way up too. She is working magic to make it work. Bless you talented Seamstresses!!♥️

I have to do that with a dress TODAY! It has an illusion boatneck with lace trim over satin sweetheart that is all up under her chin. It's from a not-so-reputable online company, so I hope the dress just needs the waist raised. I don't want to have to redo the neckline. (Oh my goodness, what a difference the razor blade has been! Such a time saver!)

WOW! You did this completely different than I thought you would--You're a genius! Because I'm an amateur/intermediate seamstress, I would've completely detached the bodice and cut it to shorten where the waist is. Then sewed the bottom skirt back onto it. I would've completely messed up this beautiful back lace/mesh design with the buttons. LOL! Thanks for your videos--they are really helpful and appreciated. p.s. I currently only sew for myself, but maybe one day I will help others. :)

ChloeDeBre Thank you so much!! The great thing about sharing is that we can see all of the different ways that we can do a sewing job. We all have different approaches. Good luck on your journey and welcome aboard!! :)

I was thinking that same thing. I would of deconstructed it at waistline and shortened bodice and put it back together. Then it would of messed with the back zip and buttons. Perfect
@BridalSewing5 жыл бұрын
That's not always wrong! :) Sometimes the whole bodice needs to be shortened, either to get proportions correct or because a bride doesn't want a dropped waist.

Hi dear, I am looking for a video on your channel showing how to raise the hem at the waist with a zipper in the back????
@madisonquattlebaum41643 жыл бұрын
The back of my gown is heavily beaded mesh and the front is satin. Will this still work? My seam allowances seam to be pretty tight already.
@lindagm93325 жыл бұрын
Thanks for sharing. Very helpful. Did you raise it in the front only?
@tselampe5 жыл бұрын
Nice! Wow, I was scared that you were going to shorten all that bodice alltogether at the bottom, which would have been a huge pity on that gorgeous design. Changing ready-made dresses so essentially must be a whole pain of a work, and you do it with such grace that one almost wants to start doing the same. I guess it becomes sort of easy (but still much work) if you are so experienced. Just Wow :-D

The process never gets shorter in steps, really, but yes, with experience, it does get easier. I love what I do, and I'm grateful that my peace with it comes through in my instruction. ❤ Thank you for watching.

I just love your videos, and learn so much. I have a similar alteration, but your alteration showed that the bustline was taken in as well, rather the entire side seam. Is that because the bust area was too big as well. Can this be done without taking in the bustline, say starting from just under the bust? I think my dress-bust would fit better by opening up the hips do the dress can sit down farther (like you did) as it sits high above the chest and the underarm \princess boning stands up too high. Thank you in advance.

Im wondering if this video is relevant to my situation. Im short and my dress is a backless dress but it sits a little too low on my short body. Would the waist have to be lifted or is there another way to fix the problem.
@BridalSewing6 жыл бұрын
jbfansa you probably need to raise the waist. It makes a tremendous difference in how flattering the gown is.
@dianapomeroy96575 жыл бұрын
Did you detach the entire bodice from the skirt?
@BridalSewing5 жыл бұрын
Nooooooo. It's much more simple than that. Did you watch the video? It would show that if I did it.
@dianapomeroy96575 жыл бұрын
@@BridalSewing I did, twice. Lol I'll watch it again though. I have a bridesmaid's dress for a young lady that has a short torso and I've never taken up a waist before...I thought maybe part of the video was edited out.
@BridalSewing5 жыл бұрын
Lol k. No mam, I never edit out critical segments like that. If I do for brevity's sake, then it would only be something very time consuming yet simple, and I would definitely say I was cutting it out, and possibly even sketch out what I was skipping over. :)
@linarodz21656 жыл бұрын
Thank you, but if she does not want a drop waist how the alteration would be?
@BridalSewing6 жыл бұрын
Lina Rodz you would detach skirt from bodice, cut the extra waist length off, and reattach. It would require remaking the back and resetting the zipper, etc. It would probably cost at least 3x as much.
@BridalSewing6 жыл бұрын
Lina Rodz ideally, she should purchase petite. If she doesn't purchase petite, it is very difficult to get this to fit without changing the design in some way.

@@BridalSewing I have the same challenge with a plus size gown and I had to cut just to get the waist right, as it is the dress is short. I'm stuck right now because it a lace fabric with the edge intact. Is there a way to fix this please🙏
@BridalSewing4 жыл бұрын
Usually, I cut along the pattern of the lace edge in a really organic way, forming an applique of lace so to speak. Shorten the all-over lace fabric & then hand sew the newly made lace applique edge back on.
