Sad fact! Bridge to Terabithia was based on a true story of sorts regarding the author's son and his best friend. The writer of Bridge to Terabithia, Katherine Paterson, her son (David Lord Paterson) lost his best friend as a child when she was struck by lightning at 8 years old in the 1970s. Her name was Lisa Christina Hill. David helped co-write and produce this movie. BtT always breaks my heart no matter how many times I've seen it.

And I'm glad that David stuck to his guns about the ending. Supposedly, Disney tried to meddle and change the ending so that Leslie was just in a coma, possibly trying to plan a sequel or just to have a happy ending. David heavily fought against it, saying it betrays it completely undermines the theme and ideas of the book

Jesse, steadfast in his conviction that Leslie was more than a figment of his imagination, lived a life intertwined with her ethereal presence. Despite the doubts cast by those around him, Jesse found solace in the enduring companionship of Leslie. As the years passed, Jesse and Leslie's connection deepened, shaping the course of Jesse's life. He became a storyteller, sharing tales of their adventures in Terabithia with others who could not see Leslie. His unwavering belief in their bond inspired those who listened, creating a community that embraced the extraordinary in the ordinary. Though some dismissed Jesse as mad, others were touched by the sincerity of his tales. The town, over time, began to appreciate the magic he brought into their lives, fostering a sense of wonder and unity. In the end, as Jesse's life came to a close, he peacefully crossed the bridge, knowing that Leslie's spirit would accompany him into the unknown. The town, once skeptical, now held a quiet reverence for the man who lived a life guided by an invisible, yet powerful, presence.

I remember when a classmate of mine died. We both had a learning disability so we got sat nxt to eachother all year with our assigned tutor during classes. He drowned on a field trip the day before our last day of school. I was in so much shock that day. So numb, almost like everything around me was just black and white. Meanwhile everyone around me was so excited for summer vacation. This movie really connected with me now understanding a little more of what Jess was going through. The actual author was inspired to write this book because her own son lost his best friend, a little girl named Lisa, when they were 8. I believe she was struck by lightning. So she really nailed what one goes through when they’re grieving

@YodatheHobbit Жыл бұрын
I don't understand this about kids today. They don't expect death and life lessons in their entertainment anymore? Kids nursery rhymes from kindergarten literally have death in them. Cartoons, looney toons have CONSTANT death in them. When did kids films suddenly become deathless? They always were when I grew up or had great risk of death between 1984-2005. Watching a movie where someone dies isn't traumatizing because it's fiction, it just makes you sad, witnessing death is traumatizing.
@mep1990 Жыл бұрын
@@YodatheHobbit To be honest, there are depictions and depictions of death in kids' enterteinment. In cartoons like Looney tunes and that kind of stuff, death is treated very lightheartedly, which I am not totally against, but to say that's a good way of teaching kids about death is a bit much. It's films like this that are valuable because while really, really sad, they depict death and loss in a serious way, which could spark an important discussion between a kid and their parents.

Actually, even though what I'm going to write sounds bad... from time to time you have to make children read about stories based on good things but also about the harsh realities of life. For example, in my country Paraguay, they made us read things that in the United States would perhaps be taboo: sad and tragic books, especially Latin American ones, not just from Paraguay. Life is not always a color of roses... and if there are roses, THERE ARE THORNS IN THEM.

The most devastating part about this movie is that it's based on a true story. The author of the book had a son (who wrote this adaptation) who's best friend died suddenly. The book was born out of her need to explain the death to her son and how painful and unfair it was.

As a matter of fact, I saw Terabithia in movie theaters in 2007 precisely, with my sister, imagine 2 girls, me with 7-8 years old, and she had 4-5, both with her mom, both happy, the movie is great, you have a good time with it, you fall in love with Leslie's character, all cool, a lot of fun, and then, "that" happens... I remember crying hugging my mom, my sister didn't quite understand back then what really happened with AnnaSophia Robb's character, but I did... and man, it hit me. And the image of this always stayed with me, I still remember it as if it were yesterday, that when we left the cinema, it seemed that we all came from a funeral or from the cemetery, a sepulchral silence and weeping here and there. Is a good movie, but I agree, you see this once in a lifetime and move on, although years later, I see others movies that traumatized even more than this one, and I DO NOT RECOMMEND THEM, "Marley and Me" or "Hachiko" with Richard Gere, with those 2 movies you will want to kill yourself of depression and total agony. And for dramas like that... there is life itself, greetings from Mexico City =)

One of my favorite quotes, "How we deal with death is at least as important as how we deal with life." (from Star Trek 2 The Wrath of Khan). I never read the book, but I remember I was watching this movie on the TV thinking it was a cute and happy film about two friends making up an imaginary world and *spoilers* the scene where the parents announced that his friend died, my mum walked in and starting immediately asking questions "what happened? what happened?" while I held up my hand telling her to stop in just complete shock, it kind of destroyed the scene for me, but the scene where his religious Dad catches him in the forest and Jesse sobs about his friend 'going to hell' while his Dad reassures him (my mum had left the room by that time) that's when I broke down in tears.

It’s sad because it’s so real it hurts. I watched this one night for fun, thinking it was just some Disney movie, just to cry myself to sleep. When I woke up, I went and cried again. I couldn’t stop crying. I told my mom about it as I started to cry, and asked if her and my dad would watch it with me that night and she agreed. That night we all got on the couch, with some tissues I bright knowing I’d need them because I knew I’d need them. Close to the end I was obviously bawling, but as I grabbed a tissue I saw my dad out of the corner of my eye with a tissue to his face, crying. My dad that made everything he did as masculine as possible, and who I’d almost never seen cry, sat there, trying to wipe the non-stoping tears coming from his eyes. I could see the same feeling I felt when first watching that movie in my dad’s eyes. It just goes to show that not even the most straight faced, nonchalant guy can hold back tears to Bridge to Terribithia.

Fun Fact - Terabithia has a similar name to the island kingdom of Terebinthia in C.S. Lewis' Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader. It is one of the islands in the Great Eastern Sea and the second closest to the Narnian mainland. The author of the original book commented that she realized the similarity upon rereading Narnia, but also made the point that C.S. Lewis likely drew inspiration from the terebinth tree in the bible, so both had drawn inspiration from somewhere, even unconsciously.
