In Mortal Kombat II, Baraka and Mileena are lovers that both Ellie and Riley chose to fight as at the arcade. Whether the creators knew it or not, their gameplay did showcase a grim foreshadowing.

Best guess for what happened. They both stayed around the mall, Reily turned and Elle had to kill her, then Marline came to gather Reily and found Elle. Transition to Episode 1. 🤷

There was so much foreshadowing leading to this episode - Marlene asking if Riley was an asshole too or something when Ellie talked badly about the fireflies, when Ellie clearly lied to Tess about being alone at the mall, the face she made about Tess asking about her 'boyfriend', when she talked about her friend who liked Mortal Kombat and Mileena, when she told Joel that hadn't been her first time killing, her reaction to drinking being "it STILL sucks"... They did such a good job with that.

Jackson was at **least** 5 days travel away, so either Ellie had to stay or leave Joel to die... there was no going for help! BTW the mall (or at least the first shot of it, when the lights come on) was CGI! 🤯

Pretty sure only the bottom level was CGI, there are shots of the actual Calgary mall floating around and it looks like that top floor with skylights above. They just inserted depth via that fake lower level.

As someone who’s played both games many, many times this was probly my favorite episode of the season, which is saying something because every episode has been 🔥 I just couldn’t stop smiling it was so touching. Neil Druckman is amazing and his writing for Ellie in this episode was just (chefs kiss)

I'm guessing that they waited for each other to turn and realize the bite on Ellie isn't spreading while Riley is slowly turning. I guess she was what Ellie's told Joel about, the person she has to kill. That's when Marlene came in, saw Ellie with the bite but she didn't turn and took her

I wouldn’t say I made a mistake and immediately watching a play through of TLOU 1 & 2 immediately after episode 1 but I had to know what happened. I didn’t watch this play through so this episode gave me sooooo much anxiety bc of how loud they were in the mall

the game version was a bit more intense bc there was multiple clickers and they went on a chase they didnt just fight one. they fought like 3 and they almost made it out but ellie accidentally slips and riley goes back for her to help ellie kill the clickers that was chasing them and thats when they get bit in the game. you should watch it. still fun to see the differences they put into the show.

Fun fact I used to play on escalators when I was little. When I was about 9 I was playing on one and my dad told me to stop, I ignored him, then fell, and the metal parts on the end of each step went into my leg. I still have the scars from it 😆

This episode is so good and you can see the innocence in Ellie. The next episode might make you throw up because of all the subtext. In my opinion one of the darkest episodes for Ellie. I think it will be the best I cannot wait. As for this episode i feel like they crammed the story so well to fit in an hour. You get a lot of back and forth in the game/DLC.

I feel like Joel definitely wanted Ellie to leave him behind for good in the beginning there. I remember Tommy said it’s about a 5 day horseback ride between Jackson, WY and Boulder, CO, so it would be very bad for Joel had Ellie did what he wanted her to😅

Yeah, I think Tommy says it would take a week, but they make it in 5 days. Joel knows that if she leaves to go to Tommy or to get help from Tommy, he's dead before she can get back. He's totally telling her to go with the knowledge that he will die once she's gone. So sad.

I don't understand how so many reactors don't understand what happened to them. It seems pretty clear, and Riley is definitely dead. Ellie lies when asked if she was in there alone and Marlene refers to her in the past tense. Riley ends up turning and Ellie has to kill her(there's no way she was talking about some random infected when saying it wasn't her first time.), then the next day the Fireflies show up to pick up Riley and the bombs and Marlene sees Ellie is bitten but not turned, stops her soldiers from shooting her and takes her back to the base.

Personally, I watch reactions because I want to get an idea about what the "average" person thinks about certain lines of dialogue, particular plot points, etc... If the "general audience" considers them well written or not, satisfactory or not, and other stuff like that. And I can´t do that when someone misses like 70% of the dialogue in the stuff they watch... So, yeah. I didn´t like their reaction. Deal with it (they seem to have no problem dealing with the fact that a random person online didn´t particularly enjoy their reaction... You should ask yourself why it bothers you so much). Anyway, have a nice day (not ironic).
