THE LAST OF US reaction Episode 7 "Left Behind"

Badd Medicine here and its Last of Us reaction time!
Ellie’s story takes centre stage in both the past and present as HBO’s The Last of Us shows us what made her the person she is today in episode 7 - a beautifully faithful retelling of the original game’s bonus chapter. Set weeks before Joel and Ellie met, it’s an episode filled with rare joy as dreams transform into reality and posters from bedroom walls become fully playable arcade cabinets. Riley and Ellie take us on a journey to the Mall where of course, only disaster awaits. This was a much needed back story for Ellie here on the show. Now we know who Riley is and why Ellie holds that name close to her heart. A slow burn, over not a bad episode.

None of this was from part 2.... this was actually from the DLC... so the game came out in 2013 and this DLC was released in 2014 ... called "Left Behind." I honestly think that this was very important to include the DLC for a multitude of reasons (especially since they can't do a DLC for the TV show - laugh) ... but at this part in the TV series, we have seen how a lot of different people deal with infected, losing loved ones, etc. Since we know Ellie is immune and it doesn't take very long to turn into an infected and that the runners are very violent... and they have a gun ... and Ellie has had to hurt someone before... BUT in the present story line, she is afraid of being alone... Joel is afraid of losing another "daughter" ... Joel and ellie have the same trauma, they have the same fear, they are the same person. Joel becomes a "zombie" when his daughter dies... dead inside, shambling through his existence... Ellie is the zombie cure for the world, but in the show she is also the cure for Joel being a zombie (she brings him back to life, love, being a dad, etc). The point though is what is Joel to Ellie. (What was henry to sam, what was Kathleen's brother michael to Kathleen, what was Bill to frank, what is Maria to tommy)... all of the relationships in the story mirror Joel and Ellie. The zombie metaphor is that all humans have the capacity to be monsters (Kansas City FEDRA and Resistance both choosing to be monsters) BUT it is the people we love that make us choose not to be monsters (but when we lose them... of they hurt us... the monster returns) Riley fought for Ellie before she left, she was older, etc... she was Ellie's first Joel (since Ellie is an orphan she never had a protector/father before Riley, and now she has joel... that is pretty clear in episode 6) but this is all building up to what I am guessing happens next week (no spoilers... I did play the games so...)

Technically I think the Ellie and Riley section of the game is actually shorter than this since it’s mixed in with the other part with Ellie trying to get a first aid kit to stitch up joel so I don’t think it’s that surprising they could do it in 1 episode. It was really beautiful though and Bella and Storm did an incredible job in this and I never want to hear people complain about Bella as Ellie ever again 😭

I seen some people complain that they didn’t have those parts where it’s parallel with her looking in another mall for supplies to help Joel while the flashbacks to the Riley stuff were happening but I think that wouldn’t have been necessary. That part was mainly just gameplay.

Pretty spot on episode of the Left Behind DLC. The implication here is heavier than what happens in my opinion. When only one survives, the other had to fend off their friend, it really makes Ellie’s moment after shooting the guy in KC a lot heavier when she tells Joel he wasn’t the first person she killed.

It also recontextualizes that scene where after Ellie tells Joel about her 'friend' who loved Mortal Kombat II she discovers a trapped infected in the basement and ends up killing it. You understand now, why she kept that moment to herself. Why she had anger & hatred in her expression when she stabbed it like she did. And where she did (in the head because she found out that was most effective at the mall). All of that pent up rage and grief needed somewhere to go. That trapped stalker was a symbol of everything she'd lost.

It's also important to remember that Marlene placed Ellie in the Federa orphanage/school on purpose to protect her. So, when Riley said that she asked the Fireflies if Ellie could go to ATL with her, they said no. They/Marlene had some sort of plan for Ellie before her getting bitten and being immune. I speculate that once Ellie became a soldier/officer, Marlene would have approached Ellie and try to get Ellie to be the inside man.

Was watching this with my friend who hadn’t played the game. He noticed the chemistry between Riley and Ellie early on and kept pointing out the scenes that reaffirmed that they had feelings for each other. Gotta give props to these two actors for making their relationship feel real in the matter of an episode.

The whole show is very character centric, set in a zombie world yes, but it isn't *about,* centrally, what's going on as far as moving through the apocalypse. At least not now.

I think this episode is pretty vital for the story. As said in this video, it shows that Ellie has suffered a deep loss as well. By staying to help patch Joel up and I'm going to assume help him recover as I doubt Joel will just be back up on his feet immediately, she's putting her own life on the line to save his, and this gives more insight on to why she's not willing to lose someone again. This episode is also the perfect embodiment of what Hitchcock once said about building suspense. He talks about showing a bomb under a table that two people are sitting and having a conversation at, who are unaware of the bomb. If you don't show the bomb and just have it blow up, it's shocking but you then miss out on the suspense of as the audience counting down in your head to when that bomb is going to go off. We know going into this story that Ellie gets bit in the Mall, and then we later get to see the infected waking up. It really puts you on the edge of your seat as you know what's coming. It's so well done in this episode.

This episode was sad in such a different way. Two kids are fully aware of their inevitable horrible doom. Ellie’s rage & Riley’s despair… it was depressing in a scary way. And all it took was a single infected to completely turn their world upside down. This episode/original story was so well done.

Bella did such an amazing job in this. The way she did the clandestine peaks at Riley on the carousel, the insecurity with the window reflection scene, the change in voice when she begs Riley to stay, the fact that you can CLEARLY see what she's feeling before she takes off the wolf mask despite wearing the mask. Apparently, the Oak has forgotten about the conversation between Ellie and Marlene when both characters were introduced in episode 1. Ellie stated that she was dumped on Fedra when she was a baby and Marlene said that she was the one who left her there. Granted, we don't know how Marlene ended up with Baby Ellie, but that's why Ellie never had a family.

I loved this episode so much. Everything doesn't need to be action 24/7 to be good. In fact, the slower character moments are what really impact me in the long run. Zombie stories are easy to tell, but stories about PEOPLE are what truly impact us.

The moment where cut back to Joel and he’s shivering/his teeth are chattering broke my heart. He’s probably cold because they’re in that freezing basement, and I imagine you can feel cold from loss of blood/a fever from infection…wish Ellie had given Joel her winter hat or an extra blanket. I thought Riley telling Ellie you can’t fight everyone and to pick your battles was more about what happened to Riley with FEDRA. We learn that Riley was the fighter, that she’d put someone in the infirmary for a week, and she ended up getting sanitation duty. This is her last night in Boston so she’s trying to tell Ellie to make better choices, to not be like her and always challenge authority, to be smart and then be able to make a difference. Sort of a learn from my mistakes kind of moment.

Episode was great. Let's you understand that when Ellie kills the trapped infected in episode 3, it's not a morbid curiosity but more a rage and hate for what it took away from her (Riley). Also 'take on me' is linked to the games because in part 2, Ellie sings a cover of the song which is amazing.

One thing I would like to say, some may disagree with, is that Joel is not our main character. Ellie is. Without Ellie the story would end with Joel arriving in Jackson. Fin. I cant fill in the details, but I don't imagine there would be much left for a story after that point. Ellie is the soul and life of this story. Period.

I've always adored the Left Behind DLC. We get to see Ellie at her most hopeful and unbothered. We get to see her fall in love, and then experience her first true loss. It also solidifies the lengths Ellie would go to fight for Joel. She's not gonna let him go because he didn't either. It is VERY crucial to understanding who she is, what drives her, and is the perfect bridge between Part 1 and Part 2. Also, the DLC has one of the best encounters in the entire franchise where you're playing as Ellie (an underfed 14 y.o. child), fighting off 2 big waves of these raiders. You have to act quickly cuz the raiders are about to break into the place where he is kept. You have the sutures you need, but these guys stand in your way. You are hopelessly outmatched, but you just don't stop fighting. It feels appropriately difficult and tricky.

The DLC shows the RIley/ Mall section, the only thing missing from this episode is that parallel to playing that, you also play as Ellie in current day as well, as she is scouting a mall to find medical supplies to help Joel, and she has to take out some hunters there- that part is mostly game play and story wise only triggers her memories of the mall with Riley. So this whole episode is just the story part of the DLC showing Ellie getting bit and losing Riley.

24:20 App Oak is absolutely right. Characters in different eps have said Fedra is needed in places. The showrunners mentioned that they are real careful not to paint one faction as only good or only bad. That's real life and i like that. All rebellions are not good rebellions and all powers are not bad/evil powers. You know some folks just take things to the extreme cause they don't like something.

Fedra is all the world that Ellie knew so she was unaware of the hardships of the civilians living in QZs across the country. All she knew was Fedra and their doctrine. It was mentioned in an earlier episode that there have already been several rebellions at other QZs. Even Frank agreed with Bill that the new regime/Fedra were operating in the same vein as Nazis, which is not good at all.

I can't lie, I find myself wishing the mall scene was just a little shorter just because I'm so invested in current day, and when we only get a bit of time with the story once a week it makes me frustrated 😂 but the episode was great, bella really sells her emotional scenes

OK I get familiar vibes from the actress that plays Riley but I can't remember where I've seen her. I'm probably not correct here but there is a song called I'll Find You by Tori Kelly and Lacrae. It's a few years old but I think in the music video, This actress plays the lead. She only would have been about 10 or 11 at the time maybe even slightly younger. She is sick in the hospital laying in bed and her parents are standing there and her spirit or consciousness or whatever stands up and leaves her body behind and then continues to run around the hospital playing with the spirits of all the other children that are in there sick. They didn't die or anything it's like theyre astral projecting like Doctor Strange.

None of this was Part 2, it was the "Left Behind" DLC released for the original game. The main difference being that you control Ellie and have her hunting around a mall looking for a first aid kit to help Joel, the flashbacks happen within those scenes.

Mission to Mars with Tim Robbins & Gary Sinise was the better of the two Mars movies that came out that year. It was another case of two similar-themed movies coming out in the same year. We had Volcano vs Dante's Peak in 1997, Deep Impact vs Armageddon in 1998, and then Red Planet vs Mission to Mars in 2000.

For me, this episode was showing a turning point for Ellie and Joel. Joel had to learn to be the vulnerable one and let her take charge. It's trust he hasn't had in anyone for a long time. Ellie said previously when Joel was trying to hand her off to Tommy. She has watched everyone she cares about die or leave her, and she didn't want to lose Joel. The flashback to Riley and the mall was her struggling with what Joel wanted her to do, leave behind another loved one. She had to watch Riley turn and know she had been left behind by her friend/love. She had to leave Tess behind and now Joel was forcing her to leave. The turning point was when she remembered that Riley and captain Kwong said - two choices 1. Easy way (leave Joel). Or 2. Stick it out, fight it, carry on and refuse to leave behind another loved one. Such a great character development episode.
