Let the tears flow. Remember in episode 4 how Ellie implied she has had to kill someone before? Either Ellie chose to mercy kill Riley or had to end her when she turned.

I was wondering how it ended since they didn't show it. Did they both just wait it out until Riley turned and Ellie didn't? Did Ellie have to kill Riley? How did Ellie fall into the hands of the Fireflies? They left all of this unanswered, unless they explain it later. I'm concerned about Joel since he does not appear in the trailer for next weeks episode. Does by he recover?

Such an amazing episode. Love every bit of it! It made me think and talk about what we take for granted. My mom and I talked about, the video stores, the magazines of games that I still have. The joy on Ellie her face as she sees the wonders of the mall. Absoluty amazing, the connection between Riley and Ellie, and Ellie and Joel. Listening to the podcast after watching the episode made me smile. This show is amazing. I love it so much❤️

Oh yeah, upon watching reactions this has become more clear for me! (gosh this is so well written) At the beginning of the episode Ellie is confronted with two choices, continue and end up as a worker below someone like Bethany, or follow the rules and become an officer herself and be above the rest as a leader. And she ends up doing neither, so she ended up in a third option basically. Then at the end they talk about the 2 options for them now that they're bitten. And she jokingly says "is there a third option" but there ended up actually being one. She survived, which is so fascinating. I bet thatll influence choices she has to make in the future, finding a third option. (I dont have knowledge of what happens in the games and would like to keep it that way please haha, so idk if this ends up being true in that sense but its what i got from this episode) 💜

@MAC React, 21:18 per the poster in episode one regarding full Cordyceps infection: -bites to the neck, head and face: 5 to 15 minutes -bites to the torso, shoulder, arm and hand: 2 to 8 hours -bites to the leg or foot: 12 to 24 hours Cordyceps goal is the brain, so the closer the bite is to the head, the less time you have. Ellie's bite was on her forearm while Ellie's was on her hand. If Ellie weren't immune she should have been the first to turn, but she of course lived to see Riley go through the four telltale signs of Cordyceps infection: slurred speech, muscle spasms, coughing and mood change.

You can tell how much Ellie means to Riley based on just how much time she put into their little date. It’s a good thing Ellie made a move. I think Riley would’ve been too shy. You see that adorable little look on her face right after they kiss? ☺️

I didn't play the game, i knew just the basic about the story, so i didn't know that Ellie liked Riley until they stopped in front of the Victoria's secret store and Ellie fixes her hair to look nice for Riley. I was like WAIT WHAT SHE LIKES HER and then all the little looks that Ellie gives to Riley during this episode made my heart melt. I'm really curious if Ellie had to kill Riley when she turned, and if they will show that on the next episode. I'll need therapy when the show ends

The moment where cut back to Joel and he’s shivering/his teeth are chattering broke my heart. He’s probably cold because they’re in that freezing basement, and I imagine you can feel cold from loss of blood/a fever from infection…wish Ellie had given Joel her winter hat or an extra blanket. I was thinking, “Can we please bundle Pedro up a little more…he’s chilly!” 😢🥶

Another fantastic episode with a lot of character depth for Ellie. Riley chose Mileena in Mortal Kombat II and Ellie played Baraka (last game). Both were Lovers in the game. Baraka skewered Mileena with his blades as finisher. That was the metaphorical endgame. That's how Ellie killed Runner-Riley. I think it's clear she stabbed her. That's why Ellie asked Joel in episode 2 what it was like for him to kill an infected, knowing that they once were human. I think she needed a comparison to her own feelings because she couldn't classify them. That's why she tortured and stabbed the stalker in episode 3. She first wanted to see if he felt something and then the anger broke through in her because an infected bit her friend and killed him. Ellie kills Riley and because Riley didn't get in touch with Marlene the next day, she showed up at the mall and took Ellie with her. At least that's what I think. There are hardly any other options. Mortal Kombat was supposed to be the game in the game, but Naughty Dog didn't get permission. So they invented a game. Now HBO has rights to both games and that's how it became possible. The escalator can also be seen metaphorically. No matter how much Ellie runs against it (sometimes everything stays the same, sometimes there are highs), it still goes further and further downhill for her. Here it is shown no matter Fedra or Fireflys, for both you are just a number. They tell you what you want to hear and what benefits them, to achieve the respective goals. And there are always only 2 options to choose from. And both are manipulated into thinking there are not more. There is only one clearly good or one clearly bad choice. The officer at the beginning is not nice, he is manipulative. This can be seen in Riley who is allowed to supervise the sewage work. The Fireflys are no different. Everyone comes in quickly, they made you feel you belong to a family and you are important to them. In fact, Riley is parked alone in the mall with bombs. Lives that are stuck. Eat or die. The series in general is all about the number 2. Bill and Frank, Ellie and Joel, Ellie and Riley, Sam and Henry, Joel and Tommy, Kathleen and Daniel, two choices, Mortal Kombat 2, joke book volume 2, red or green. I actually thought Ashley Johnson would have her cameo here. Obviously, this was not the case, but it comes later in another memory. Most likely in the season finale. Next episode Troy Baker will get his cameo.

Maddison asks how Riley was able to break in... If you go back just a moment Ellie is talking about how they can't sneak out to the park because of new patrols. Ellie and Riley have snuck out a number of times before, so they've both snuck back in. Getting in for Riley, would be just "sneaking back in, after being gone longer than normal." 12:32-12:44 "Oh the ink" "Damn, there's no ink after 20 something years" In 2003, the booth likely still used photopaper and developer chemicals. The chemicals and the paper's photoreactive coating have likely degraded significantly in 20 years. If it were an ink printing system, it probably wouldn't have worked at all.

Interesting fact: In Mortal Kombat II, Baraka and Mileena are lovers. Ellie and Riley chose to fight as them at the arcade. Whether the creators knew it or not, their gameplay did showcase a grim foreshadowing.

More Tears yet to be shed😭 Oh, and I was almost waiting for Ellie to tell Joel, "You're not getting rid of me that easy! Hey you two! I've been waiting for your reaction. :) 6:35 That was not part of the game, but there was a part where they drank alcohol. There was a tent in the mall where a guy with his horse lived (he was already dead by the time of the game) and he had some alcohol in a box. By the way, the same guy was the one Ellie learned how to ride a horse from, in case you wondered why she could ride a horse even though she grew up in a QZ. ;) 21:11 The sign in the first episode says that a bite to the torso, shoulders, arm and hand takes 2-8 hours to fully infect the person. So it probably took about 8 hours for Riley to become an infected, since she was bitten in the hand and the infected couldn't bite down for a long time either. By the way, in episode 5 Ellie mentioned that Bryan was not the first person she shot. It's not shown, but presumably she had to shoot Riley when Cordyceps gained control of her, which makes it even sadder considering what Riley meant to her. I find it hard to believe that FEDRA is holding anything together in their QZs, including Boston. Settlements like the one Tommy's living in are doing better than those QZs.

Perhaps. I mean, Fedra relies on transporting goods from QZ to QZ, or factories they have located elsewhere. Jackson is entirely self-sustaining. They have all that they need in one location. Anything else they send out a party and bring it back. It's the equivalent to having one nation instead of fifty nations trying to exist as one. You feel me?

I feel like you are ignoring the drawbacks of FEDRA for the sake of the benefits. In the show alone, FEDRA has already lost 2 of their QZs(probably more) via the infected or rebellions. Whatever resources that are going to the QZs, the military are most likely getting the best stuff while the people living under FEDRA's protection are getting scraps. The people can't even leave the QZs unless permitted by FEDRA and publicly executed if caught trying to leave. The people are basically prisoners in those QZs. One nation under a dictatorship(a failing one at that) is worthless.

Between the heartwarming cute moments showcasing Ellie and Riley finally being able to act like kids again for once, if only for a little while...... only to rip it all away again for the seventh time in a row (damn you, show), this never ending River of tragedy that follows Ellie is emblematic of not just the shows central theme but why Ellie continues to fight, to carry on. It showcases her and Riley on opposite sides of an ideological, real and tribalistic conflict before they lay down their arms and come together to just be close for a little while because they're each others purpose in this moment; a fascinating parallel to the Bill and Frank love story and why it matters greatly when Ellie continues to lose and lose. And now that she does have someone who looks after her, who she can depend on, who matters to them, she’ll be damned if she loses that type of meaningful connection again. For Riley’s sake and everyone else who died, Ellie will finish this journey……even if it kills her.

I may sound like a broken record, but this episode was damn beautiful. This was Bella Ramsey's episode to shine. I seriously, seriously don't understand the hate towards her as Ellie. She personifies Ellie just as well as Ashley Johnson. If you don't like it, fine. But, if you're gonna criticize it, p+$$ off. Also, if you have a problem with queer stories and representation, go jump off a cliff somewhere. Please and thank you. Storm Reid as Riley is amazing casting. I loved her vulnerability, her interaction with Ellie and her performance. Damn, her story is tragic. Excited for Episode 8 and the arrival of Troy f'in Baker. God, I'm hyped.

The decision to add the ominous cut to the infected on the ground was one of the rare mistakes in the show. Would have been way better for that to be a surprise.

i agree. with all the reactions i’ve seen many people weren’t able to properly enjoy every moment afterwards without being worried about the kids being too loud or the infected lurking about the corner or something.

@@melsaint8616 That, and even without having played the game you knew bites were coming one way or another. It's not like they spoiled the reveal. There was a lot of time in between that glimpse of the infected and when the infected actually showed up. It could have happened anywhere in that tike and the suspense built was executed flawlessly, as always with this show.

I'm a little disappointed with this one, because of the removal of the arcade scene from the game, one of the most iconic and meaningful scenes that showed Ellie's vivid imagination, which is very much a precursor to another very iconic scene in Part 2. With all the Left Behind references in the previous episodes I also kinda expected to see Ellie having to shoot Riley, but instead they just ended it pretty much like the DLC did, leaving the rest up to imagination. Storm Reid was an amazing fit for Riley though, really nailed her character. Part 2 spoiler (mostly for her): 19:15 "She's so happy! I don't want her happiness to go away!" I will repeat myself. Don't have her watch Part 2 dude. I mean you know her best but still… Might be best to call it after season 1. Or at least mentally prepare her somehow. Part 1 is an emotional roller coaster, but Part 2 is nothing but a downwards spiral into darkness that will leave you as an empty husk at the end.

To the reactors: Part two is an incredible story of self actualization, inner strength, prosperity, and inner peace. It is a journey of one's turmoil being released and embracing the notion that our past doesn't define our future. Quite frankly, it's a message many could benefit from taking in. Sadly, many do not. I think they haven't reached that part in their journey yet. Regardless, never let anyone tell you what you can/can't or should/shouldn't do in life.
