16:54 I don't see this as double standards, because the love of nature and the love of a human being are very different things. And he is correct, if he isn't even sure if he can ever love Penelope (much as he likes her, enjoys her company, respects her) but she is already in love with some one else, that is not fair to either of them. He has been honest with her, and she has been a little less than perfectly honest with him. Also, after events this evening, methinks he has a clear notion her hopes are not beyond the realm of the possible. He genuinely hopes what she longs for will happen. And he was right. 17:14 Portia does try, but she is NOT a good mother. 18:05 Damn but these two are PERFECT for each other! 22:44 You can see him decide right then and there. He has at long last discovered who is for him, and he will not wait any longer.

Yeah that wasn’t his actual love declaration at all. I expect they’ll use some, if not all of his speech from that book and that is one of the most sweeping & romantic of the entire book series.

I'm a few months late to the party, but I'm loving your reactions! Fwiw, Colin wasn't hesitating because he wasn't sure about his own feelings for Penelope. He's known he's in love for a while now. He was hesitating because ever since their kiss, he's seen her consistently choosing Debling over him. Of course, she's only doing because she's trying to be realistic and move on, but he doesn't know that. He's staying back because he wants her to be happy, but he's dying inside at the thought of her with someone else. That's his struggle. That's also why it took him so long to be straight about his feelings with her, and why he kept giving other reasons for her not to marry him. He has no idea how his confession will be received.
