I want to make a point here. Of the three seasons I have watched of BRIDGERTON, my favorite couple is Penelope and Colin--and this is largely because I see myself in them. Both are younger or middle children who are pretty much given little or no respect by their peers. Both feel powerless and have tried to rectify this, sometimes rashly. Both want to simply partake and enjoy the society in which they live but both struggle to do so. Both are intensely lonely. Colin at least knows his family loves him, but they don't respect him, and he has surely figured out (since he is not stupid but merely foolish) were he not family they would only tolerate him. He (and Francesca) do not feel at home among the boisterous, bickering family to which they belong. Both he and Francesca are the most eager to marry and have a home of their own. In a way they are the Anti-Benedict and Anti-Eloise, who each have no interest in marriage and seem to enjoy the banter most fully. More, Colin is (in modern terms) a demisexual more or less. He wants to be in love. He wants physical intimacy but coupled with emotional intimacy, and it is clear he does not feel worthy of it. Hence that hero complex. The more he has tried to be what society expected, the more dissatisfied he was (up to and including hurrying away from a threesome to go meet Pen, then later only watching two girls make out from politeness clearly feeling no real interest at all once he'd shifted Penelope out of the category "sister"). Once he started looking at Penelope as a woman, he fell and fell HARD. And within twenty minutes of finding out she felt the same way he was announcing their engagement. Within twenty four hours he'd already chosen a place to be theirs and theirs alone. His concern/terror that she didn't like it was palpable, and his flat surprise that she was startled as his defense of her says a lot about how he views her. Likewise, Penelope does need Colin. Because her potential to defend herself in the open has been stifled, and he brings it out of her. Just as he needs her, to experience real love and a real relationship outside of his fantasies (which was why Marina was such an extremely poor match for him). One of the things I love about the matches in BRIDGERTON is how the best couples help each other grow. And that is what I see in Colin being with Penelope, and vice versa. Kate and Anthony are my second favorite couple. Third so far is a tie between John/Francesca and Phillipa/Albion. One hallmark of all four is the unbridled JOY they feel just by having each other in their lives. In two of them this was/is a journey, but then that is what a Romance is all about.

I don't think Colin sees Penelope as a shy wallflower. They were childhood friends, He knows how clever and amusing she is and they often laugh together

You guys should watch Sammy Bates' character analysis of Colin on her channel. He's a much more interesting and complex character than you seem to think he is. But because his history, trauma, motivations, arc, etc. aren't as in your face as Simon or Anthony's, complete with a full-on flashback throwing their trauma in your face, people tend to miss it. He is a genuinely good man, and the perfect man for Penelope, even putting aside her love for him. She has always been invisible to society, and even to her family. He's the only one who ever really saw her, even if it wasn't in a romantic light until recently. I would argue that he saw her better than even Eloise ever did... honestly, I think she did a lot more talking than listening in their friendship. It's one thing to not know that your best friend has been in love with your brother since always, but to not even know she was interested in marriage? I feel like Penelope was more of a sounding board than a friend to her sometimes. Kind of like how we see Eloise treating Cressida this season. But Colin was always genuinely interested in hearing Penelope's thoughts and opinions. Whereas Eloise tends to ignore or bulldoze over anything that doesn't align with her views, Colin specifically says that one of the things he loves about Pen is her ability to make him see the world in ways he never imagined. Also, Colin is a protector, always ready to defend those he loves. And as you pointed out, whether or not she *needs* someone to protect her, she deserves it. People act like he's stupid, but he's actually a really intelligent and well-read guy, and a good writer. The conversations he and Pen had, both in person and through letters, have always been deep and engaging. They are on a similar level, intellectually. He has his own passions (like travel), but people write them off because they find him overeager, or assume he's being pretentious, when he's really just excitable (which is one of the things Penelope specifically loves about him). He is very aware of the people around him, and their feelings, and tries to meet their needs. He's incredibly thoughtful. Consider the gifts he brought back for each of his family members- suited exactly to their tastes, not who they "should" be or what they "should" want. He brought Eloise a rare Bavarian text on the rights of women, despite the fact that those very views got her and the whole family in hot water just last season. And he's surprisingly emotionally mature and self-aware, especially compared to other beloved characters, including Penelope. We love Penelope, but she is a teenage girl who uses Whistledown as a burn book to tear down whoever she's mad at, and she's not great at accountability for it, either. She needs the maturity and stability Colin has to offer. And he does know her. Even though he doesn't know yet that she is Lady Whistledown. I was surprised that, right after you said that, you skipped over the part where he tells her she's the bravest woman he has ever known. He knows exactly how strong and clever and brave she is, even without knowing her secret. He's not defending her because he thinks she can't do it herself. He's defending her because she shouldn't have to, and he wants to. The storyline that they don't really know each other is a big part of the book, but they completely dropped that plot in the show, because they are actually really close friends. He does know her, arguably better than anyone else, even before the Whistledown reveal. For me, Colin and Penelope are THE Bridgerton couple. Francesca and John are second, but nothing could ever compare to Polin's true, deep friendship + passion. It is absolutely ::chef's kiss::

Watching this season then watching some people response to Colin made me realize that media literacy is indeed dying 😅 In watching all 3 seasons of Bridgerton I’ve come to realize that Colin is indeed one of if not the most complex character in this show! Which makes him easily misunderstood if you did’t fully watch and pay attention to him!

That is a superb video essay. But different people more easily see different things. Another channel --Chronicles of Noria--does a great job for example of analyzing how fathers and mothers impact the characters and stories.

I am so thrilled and happy to see you two reacting to BRIDGERTON again! 11:11 The Bridgertons have ENORMOUS tracts of land, which are rented out to farmers. The rents they get from those lands sustain their extravagant lifestyles (especially since there is no income tax and hardly any taxes paid by the gentry). I mean, they might have 80K acres of land, divided up between maybe two thousand farmers, each paying 50 pounds a year. That is 200K pounds, which is over twnenty million dollars a year in today's cash! Then they invest that money in various stocks and bonds. Yeah, they are rolling in it. 14:11 Nicola Coughlin looks like a goddess! 21:15 There is a fan theory that the boxer's wife is Lady Danbury's illegitmate child, which would make that young man her grandson. It is a theory.

I started watching this show through YT clips of this season just a few weeks ago, so Penelope and Colin are my very favorite couple. I love Colin as the lover boy, not the f*ckboi. I’m still working my way through season 1, but I am not really into Daphne and Simon yet.

In the book, Colin struggles with his place in the family and his self esteem. The show doesn’t give that aspect so his character and he seems very empty. You can see Penelope’s struggles with her relationship with Eloise and family so her character seems richer.

The show did the same. It was his entire arc especially in season 2 and in season 3 part 1.

@@takichan87 Yep his arc is quite clearly laid out. It's been happening for 3 seasons - I think because of how blunt and simple the other male leads arcs have been (and how it was pretty much presented in finger puppet form) that the subtlety of Colin's has challenged people in a way they weren't either prepared for or up to the task of understanding.

Being LW doesn't nean she is a different person If anyone, it is indeed ONLY COLIN who really knows the ambitious & 'what a barb!" face of Pen He just doesn't know she has already acted on those ambitions & that they are going to put him & his family at significant risk In Pen's defence, he really didnt opt for a proper courtship thanks to his insecurities. Letting each other know such important stuff is one of the reasons why courtship period matters🤷🏻‍♀️

Never got into them. I was hyped so hard for their season, it was the season is started watching and i was so disappointed. :( S1 and S3 are my favorites. I thought Anthony did everything wrong and i really dislike his character.
