Hey, Gore's a nice place, I love New Zealand's South Island, I'll be passing Gore in Feb 2019 on my way to Te Anau to visit Milford Sound and Fiordland. New Zealand's Southern Alps are awesome, great fun in a glider, although some Swiss style chalet houses would be a welcome addition, a cog railway to the top of Mount Cook might be asking too much. Of course I am not being serious, New Zealand is wonderful just as it is. I hope you get the chance to visit Switzerland again, there's nowhere quite like it and the people are so friendly.

Travelling by train is probably the best way to see Switzerland, There are plenty of tour companies offering rail tours around Switzerland at sensible prices. I have also toured by coach and train. Another way to experience Switzerland and its railways is to stay in Interlaken and buy a "Regional Pass Bernese Oberland" giving unlimited travel within a specified area covering many Of Switzerland's iconic railways and boat trips. Most trips are included, but travel on some private lines is at a heavily discounted rate.

Hi Rick, there is nowhere quite like Switzerland, all the things I get great pleasure from in one place, even the big cities are relaxing places to hang out and admire the wonderful architecture. The rails are narrow to enable them to follow the mountain contours, keeping the original construction costs down. In Switzerland the railways are treated as the arteries that keep the country moving, this is evident in the investment decisions. The people are really friendly and those Chalet houses just complete the scenes that adorn chocolate box lids.

I start 4 Seasons after the train has left the station and travels through the first houses and lovely trees with Fall leaves. Your train and Vivaldi are great companions! Best experienced with KZbin Premium/no commercials!
@Timsvideochannel13 жыл бұрын
Hi John, your comment made interesting reading, I'll have to look into Vivaldi. In recent months the number of adverts appearing on my videos has had a detrimental effect on viewing figures, I tried to cut the number of ads, then the KZbin algorithm reduces recommendations. I don't know where these changes are leading, but the result is almost unwatchable videos, earning less money. I get the impression Google is forcing KZbin Premium on viewers by making the platform unwatchable with too many, poor quality, never ending adverts.

@@Timsvideochannel1 I don't have cable TV, so I picked KZbin Premium since it was so much less. I don't know how it works for the channels, but I like "no commercials." @Timsvideochannel13 жыл бұрын
@@johnferrick1905 Hi, I too am a bit of a "technosaur" especially when it comes to mobile phones. I checked out Vivaldi, it is a browser that incorporates an Ad Blocker. If it works in the UK, I'll give it a go. I don't know how it effects my viewing statistics, but I do know that ad blockers, especially in India cause me to loose about half of my potential income, which doesn't really matter too much to me because KZbin is a hobby not my full time job. I am considering cancelling my Sky TV contract because I'm fed up with all the adverts, I'd rather pay for KZbin Premium and Netflix, that way I can avoid adverts and I get to watch what I want. Regular TV has gone down the tubes, it's not like it used to be when comedians made me laugh, the News wasn't biased and detective series were first class. It's nice to know you enjoy my channel. @@b43xoit no. the "schynige platte railway" nearby (other end of lake brienz) is about the same age and steepness as the "brienz-rothorn railway" here and has straight metal sleepers. It's from the era around 1900 right at the beginning of tourism in our region here, when every railway was a one-off and no standardised system existed. All tourist railways here in switzerland from that era developed and use theyr very own system of cog, steam, electricity with different numbers of volt either AC/DC, one-phase (or two phase, only the kleine scheidegg to jungfraujoch railway!) etc. in our region this is the only railway with wishbone sleepers, and we've got many tourist cog-railways...

What an enjoyable little train journey. It almost makes me weep that I will never be able to go on such a trip myself (health reasons), but at least I can enjoy watching your videos. Tim, I hope you never underestimate the amount of vicarious enjoyment you provide to people all over the world with your lovely video presentations.

Hi, it is always a pleasure to share my adventures, the kind comments make creating this channel more than worthwhile. I loved watching Micheal Palin's travel programs on TV, they inspired me, because they were not about him, they were about the places he visited, when he spoke to people he met along the way, he acted as a sort of catalyst to get them to share their lives and experiences, he is a very rare and unique man, not a celebrity, more of a real person just chatting, sharing amazing moments. I know I'm lucky to visit these places. On my travels two experiences have actually made me cry tears of joy, the first time was many years ago when Yugoslavia was still one country, I drove to the water front at Lake Bled, when I got out of the car and looked at the church on the island in the middle, my eyes just welled up, the second time it happened was shortly after leaving the dockside at Milford Sound (New Zealand), Mitre Peak was like something straight out of a fairy tale. This little train taking tourists up a mountain speaks volumes about the Swiss people, they really love their country, deriving massive pleasure from sharing the views normally reserved for intrepid mountaineers. The world is a better place for all those people with grand visions who often went bankrupt achieving their dreams for us all to enjoy. I really appreciate your comment. Thank you.

Beautiful trip, can't help to think what if a cog broke a tooth or the track had broken teeth. Would be some kind of roller coaster ride down that mountain!!! Great video, thanks for sharing
@Timsvideochannel19 жыл бұрын
+vettebecker1 Cheers, it would make a brilliant roller coaster, but think it think it would be a one off. The reason it should not happen is that the carriages are fitted with cog wheels as well, so it would take a really catastrophic failure to turn a rack railway into a roller coaster.

More than 100 yrs ago, with less tech such an amazing rail route has been built. People were selfless and more hardworking then. But these days even simple flat roads are costing billions of dollars for no valid reason
@Timsvideochannel15 жыл бұрын
Our forefathers had vision and a determination to see things through, they were not restricted by a health and safety culture that makes projects uneconomic before they start, add to that a plethora of regulations such as accessibility for the disabled etc ( BTW I do believe the disabled should have access where possible at a cost that does not kill the project). In the past, if someone wanted to build a railway up a mountain, it was only the physical mountain they had to conquer, today officialdom has become more of a challenge than the mountain itself. People still have vision and drive today, they will still take a gamble with their own money, it is often over regulation and the not in my backyard attitude attitude of a few people that makes projects uneconomic, a great example of this is the proposed high-speed railway from London to the North of England, it has already taken close on 20 years, cost an absolute fortune and nothing much has happen yet. In China, where government does not face constant re-election, they can just get on an build the railways. I do not propose that country's should be run in the same way as China, but somewhere in between Chinese and Western style government there is a sensible compromise that would allow things to happen, whilst adequately compensating those directly affected by new projects. Switzerland is a very democratic country and its people are sensible enough to know when projects should go ahead, they can see the big picture, hence why new transport projects both road and rail get the go ahead, there are a number of very expensive tunnels under construction or recently completed that will intimately cut both journey times and pollution, the Gotthard Base Tunnel being a good example.

@Timsvideochannel18 жыл бұрын
+George Haeh Hi George, there are a lot very good videos taken in Switzerland both of its railways and breathtaking scenery, I have a way to go before I can compete with the best, but I get a lot of satisfaction from making these videos, as when I set off, I am never quite sure how the day will turn out. I never know how the driver will react to my request to place a camera in the front window, in Switzerland they are likely to say 'Why not?', whereas in the UK and many other Western European countries, the response is more likely to be 'I would like to say yes, but it is more than job is worth'. There is also the unpredictable weather, as I often travel alone, I never who I am going to meet. My lack of forward planning means most of my videos are a mystery to me at the beginning of the day, I get a real kick out of it when they turn out OK. I really appreciate your comment, it means a lot to me.

@Timsvideochannel16 жыл бұрын
Hi Tom, the 5.5K likes to 119 dislikes is an overwhelming vote in favour of this amazing little train. There are 5 or 6 of these railways in this part of Switzerland, but this is the only one with regular steam, the place is a rail-fans paradise, often described as a full size model railway. It would be an interesting project for the back yard, I have never seen working model cog railroad, you could be onto something there.
