As someone who is a virtual shut-in due to a disability that limits my mobility, the only way I can travel these days is through videos like yours. Such a bittersweet mix of being able to see such unearthly beauty, but tempered with the reality that I will never get the chance to actually be there, to experience Switzerland with all five senses. For those who have the chance to travel, I do beg of you to not miss that chance -- the world is too big of a place to waste your life staring at the same four walls. Don't let the illusion of "responsibility" keep you from going -- there are always a million reasons not to do something.

Hi, its a pity disability limits your ability to get out and about, but I get the impression you derive pleasure from the next best thing "Virtual Travel". Sometimes people follow my adventures with the aid of "Google Earth", the photographs and information available is almost limitless, they tell me about the places I missed and add no end of extra information to the story. Travel is so much more than seeing beautiful places, I love meeting people, trying different things, eating unfamiliar food, understanding the country I live in from an outsiders view point, they often see things in a very different way. I am lucky to live in the UK and I get to travel 3 or 4 times a year, the world is a wonderful place. You are so right to say there are always a million reasons not to do something. My family had an old peoples home when I was young, my job at the weekends was to take tea and biscuits to the residents, some in their rooms, others in communal areas, I spent a lot of time listening to their stories, many had spent a good part of their lives overseas in places like India, Malaysia and the USA. It is only when I took time to listen I realised how important it is to follow ones heart and live, being older with a few shillings in the bank is OK, but nothing enriches people more than a lifetime of wonderful memories, I'll be financially strapped and memory rich when I'm too old to travel, I'm the wrong side of sixty now and there is still most of the world to see. I lived in Switzerland for a number of years and was never short of things to see and most of those things simply take your breath away. They seem to build stuff like this for fun though the construction would not have been. You can be in the mountains a come across some structure perched on the side of an impossible drop and just wonder at, not just the 'why?' but also the 'how?' they got the materials to such places.....let alone the inspiration. The Swiss are just special.

The Swiss just love engineering whether it is mechanical, electrical, structural or civil. To them a mountain is not an obstacle, its a challenge. The people are really friendly, add to that the spectacular scenery traversed by amazing railways and its easy to see why people love the place. I am an engineer and I really appreciate the things they do, even the children's play parks teach engineering principles.

Hi John, when the Swiss see a mountain they have an overwhelming desire to find a way to take the public to the top so that everyone can enjoy the amazing views. We owe a lot to the pioneers who took the financial and sometimes physical risk to build these awesome little railways.

Hi, I'm really pleased your son liked watching this video. He reminds me of a book I was given when I was young, I think it was a Penguin Book, with a title something like "Trains of the World", most of the pages were filled with beautiful photos of trains in locations around the world. On one of the pages was a picture of a little train crossing an amazing bridge surrounded by breath taking scenery, the caption read "Bernese Oberland Railway". From that moment on I knew I had to see this incredible place and I am pleased to say I did get there eventually. I hope your son makes to Switzerland one day to see these awe inspiring little railways taking people to the mountain tops from where they can gaze in awe at the incredible scenery below.

My Dad worked for indian Railways for 37 years and retired last year. He worked in the railways with so much passion , he always used to narrate how steam engine worked and working in ghat secessions. He gets so excited watching these videos . Hi, so nice that your Dad enjoyed his time on the railways, most railwaymen I meet love their job, although not all admit to it. My daughter started working on the railways as a signaler three or four years ago after a career training horses. Her signal box is a busy junction at the start of a single track main line and a single track branch line, it is also the turn back point for commuter trains, she loves her new job, chatting to the driver's and waving to regular passengers. I imagine your father enjoys catching up with other railwaymen to reminisce about the old days, he'd love Switzerland.

+tridentmusic There is nothing quite like a Swiss mountain railway. I fondly remember the old BR any reasonable route ticket, there are three routes from my home town to London and now there is endless engineering work at weekends, it would be so nice to choose the route that did not involve a bus ride, alas different routes, different operators and they don't accept each others tickets, Fortunately travelling in Switzerland is still a breeze, there engineers can maintain the network without closing it every weekend. The interrail ticket still exists, but British residents are not allowed to use it in Britain, because it is a cheaper than buying a normal ticket for most medium and long distance journeys. Ah memories.

This is one of my favourite rides, the views from the train are awesome and a steam locomotive is the usual motive power, unless it's an early or late train and sometimes on exceptionally busy days when diesels help out to add extra capacity. I'm pleased you enjoyed the ride.

OMG! I had to keep reminding myself to breath! Firstly, I'm from Canada, and I don't know anything about Switzerland, or trains. I couldn't believe how that little train engine not only went up those grades, but went down them as well! without doing a Nancy Green down the slopes! And then at a slow ground speed, I realized that the center track is actually a cogged rail for a driven gear to push or pull against. Ah-haa! Still, a marvelous achievement! I had no idea that such a beautiful place existed on Earth! I also considered that what a beautiful nation of people they must be to have created and live in this wonderland, this permanent land of Santa Claus and his Elves;: a real-world, year round vision and mentality of every child's Christmas dream.. So clean... even the train's engine didn't throw any black smoke out! Everyone is always smiling! There is not a hint of a gum wrapper or garbage anywhere; the cheerful sound of Nordic festive style music playing; and of course, the scenery, the houses, the mountains ... the everything... I'd better stop now or my face will start to leak. If after I go, and if it were possible by the powers above, I would wish to spend the rest of any ethereal time granted my soul as a benevolent ghost who could secretly walk or fly out and about at will throughout this most remarkable piece of the universe. Although being later in age and not in good health, I will now put no small effort into looking deeply into your wonderful country. Living next door to the US, and at this awful time in modern history , this is a particularly wonderful find for me personally. Thank you so much.

Hello, I loved reading your comment, I live in England and I love to visit Switzerland, it is a stunningly beautiful country, I love the Swiss people, they are so friendly and have a great sense of humor. I've caught the Canadian from Toronto to Vancouver in December, it was a truly magical journey, we started by visiting Niagara Falls, they look amazing in winter, then we we caught the train, the great Lakes were frozen as were many of the rivers, we stopped over in Jasper, there were fascinating ice sculptures in the town center, I guess what I'm saying is that Canada is a nice place too. Back to Switzerland, they love engineering, even the kids play-parks are full of equipment designed teach youngsters the principles of engineering, if that equipment was anywhere else in the world it would suffer from vandalism. Vandalism is not in the Swiss dictionary, they love and look after their country, they are also to happy to welcome tourists. The little steam engines are quite modern, they burn light oil that gives off less pollution, although we did pass one of the 100+ year old original engines on our way back down. This railway closes in winter, but most stay open to transport people and their cars through and over the mountains in Winter, some of the roads become toboggan runs, the place really is a winter wonderland for three or four months of the year. The Swiss have a wonderful attitude to life and it shows in everything they do. I'm pleased you enjoyed the ride. Take care and stay safe. Tim.

Hi, Switzerland is home to so many wonderful cog railways, it's impossible say which is the best, but this one has to be in the top three. The views are simply awesome and you are correct in your assumption that most of the steam locos are oil burners, although the Loco BRB No.6 seen at 23:02 is coal fired - brienz-rothorn-bahn.ch/thelocomotives/?lang=en I'm so glad that the earlier pioneers who built this railway weren't put off by the challenge, because as a result of their work generations of tourists have been able to enjoy the views from top, that otherwise may only have been available to intrepid mountain climbers.

I love this video because I love Switzerland (steam locos, too). Switzerland is so beautiful. Interlaken was my first holiday destination outside of the UK along with my parents and brothers.

I have two favourite railway centres, Interlaken and Porthmadog in Wales. They are both located in beautiful places with wonderful narrow gauge railways nearby. Interlaken was an amazing first foreign destination, you would be very hard pushed to find a better place for scenery and unusual railways anywhere in the world.

Watching these heavenly sceneries which exist in Europe makes me think of all the people who are going as far as Asia and South America from Europe ie UK for example when all they have to do is fly afew hours max to end up in places as beautiful as Switzerland.

Excellent video of the BRB.The starting sequence really gave a great sense of the elevation climb. The locomotive is really powerful and it climbs the gradient smoothly, excellent chuffing! Thanks for the video.

Another EXCELLENT video Tim, as always!! I watched the drivers view first and then this one. One breath taking view after another. I had to think that I would demand a parachute before I rode this line! My family rode the cog railroad up the Zugspitze in Germany a number of years ago. These little engines are amazing, looks like you could eat off them. The diesel at the end seemed rather boring by comparison. I am going to watch this with my grandson next week on my 60" LED screen, I think he will love it as well. Thanks again for sharing Tim, this is quite wonderful stuff!!

+Scott Sinclair Hi Scott, I really appreciate your comment, again I was lucky, everything came together, good weather for the time of year, wonderful colors, friendly train crew and plenty of room on the train to move around and film. The little engine almost made light work of the job, with it's purposeful exhaust beat and gleaming paintwork completing a near perfect scenario.
