That's what I love about small engines too. About six years ago, a close friend of mine was forced to move and close his backyard shop, and he gave me five machines that people had abandoned that had been in his back yard for years. I knew almost nothing at the time about small engines, but I just tore into them. I got three of them running, and built one good machine out of the other two. I fell in love with it. Six years later, I am a semi-pro that is getting ready to go pro. I am self taught, and I learn something new from every machine I work on. That's what I love about it. Every machine has it's own story, and every one is different. I have come across so many things that I never expected, especially since the majority of the stuff I work on came out of someone's trash or has been sitting for years. As soon as I think I know everything, a machine comes along that humbles me, lol.

Lol. I didn't know why, but I knew those compression readings in the other video didn't make any sense. I'm glad you stuck with it and got to the bottom of it. I was really curious about this engine. We all learn something new every day.

Tom I got in yhe habit after pulling an engine, I write up a hang tag and attach it to the saved saved engine for storage. I write the info off the old mower and if the engine is a runner or not just for parts. And If i rob something off a good engine iI notate that on the tag.
@jesterr71339 күн бұрын
It's possible you could have something going on with the release valves on those testers. Maybe they are letting just enough air out that it can't read on a small engine.

You can calibrate that gauge that reads 20 psi. You will have to take it apart, to do so.

Tom. You have all those known good engines around you right there! You have to be able to trust your diagnostic equipment. Test those two gauges on your old walk behind or one of those riders and

Steve also put out a video on the correct RPM for overcoming the compression release and how he does it. He uses a drill to get past the 500 RPMs and gets at least 25 pounds more compression.

Hi Tom thanks for your videos I would check all your compression testers with a know good running engine or two, mabey your testers have a leak in their hoses or Schrader valves Thanks again and God bless

There may be some kind of deal with the blade adapter or baffles on these mowers. I have one of them right now. It has a deep groove in the rear baffle where the blade has been making contact with it, but the blade doesn't even come close to touching it when I turn it by hand, and I don't hear anything when it is running. I'm not sure exactly how it happened.

As Fatbot.25 mentioned, you cannot spin the motor fast enough with a pull rope to get an accurate compression reading. The broken gauge demonstrated an increase in pressure because it had a very short hose - less volume to fill on four pulls of a start rope. Again....spin that motor with a drill or an impact, and check it using a hose WITH a Schrader valve. All that other dinking around is a waste of time. Great video, though !!! I'm studying these push mower videos, because I have a dormant push mower, that I need to resurrect, before spring. I've already brought back to life: a 2146 Cub rider, a "Crapsman" leaf blower, a "Crapsman" edger, and a Homelite clutchless string trimmer (a whippy snipper, as the Brits call it).

Talking about weird issues, I bought a Craftsman self propelled from a local scrapper for $6 a few months ago. When I pulled on the cord, the engine wouldn't turn. It came to a dead stop. I decided to turn the blade by hand and see if it would move. When I did, I felt a ton of hardened grass buildup under the deck. When I flipped it over, there was about 2 inches of hardened grass buildup all the way around the under side of the deck. The grass buildup was causing the dead stop. When I cleaned it, the blade turned fine. I put some gas in it, and it fired right up. Talk about unusual issues. Have you ever seen one with so much grass buildup that the blade couldn't turn? That was a first for me, and that is why it ended up in the trash.

I ve got one for you, Tom. Ivan, from Pine Hollow Auto Diagnostics, and another expert mechanic, ran every imaginable test, trying to find out why a Subaru (?) would not run right. Turns out the camshaft was twisted just enough the mess up the timing. They made the camshaft hollow for some strange reason. Neither one of them had ever seen it happen before. I love your smoke machine. The volume of those long hoses is quite large compared to the volume of that cylinder. You should disassemble that gauge stuck at 20, to see what the inside looks like. You might be able to twist the needle back to zero, and secure it with super glue or epoxy. Maybe bugs got inside it, and died. I wonder if the hoses are sealing in the head correctly? It wouldn't take much of a mismatch to lose pressure. Go easy on the carbon monoxide from those propane heaters. That is a molecule that loves to bond to hemoglobin which carries oxygen around the body.

Honestly, with this being a Toro deck, I would use that other engine for this particular deck, since that engine came from a Toro machine. It would make it look a lot less cobbled together, and probably bring better money.
