We love our Rodgersia bronze peacock but note siting is tricky and in our experience it needs to be well established before the rains hit hard.. Vernonia Iron Butterfly is a good choice for late bee forage but rabbits love it so it needs to be protected when it first emerges and go with leaner soil to retain structure for winter (not really an option for us - so will be Chelsea chopping in future)

We were also at Briggs this past weekend. Such a great place to visit! So many well taken care of plants and well curated garden accessories. And I recommend the pastries at the cafe! I have had the same Phlox David plants for at least fifteen years. Love them! They are in a sunny, yet crowded spot, and not a spot of mildew right now, even though we’ve had quite a bit of humidity in central Massachusetts. I think I can recall occasional mildew in the past, but only rarely. They are quite tall - about four feet and don’t flop - and huge fragrant blooms. I’ve heard them called the bridal phlox because they’ve so showy. Highly recommend! Thank you for all the information that you share in such a pleasant way, Steph!, Cindy

The Rattlesnake Master and Ironweed are native to the US and much needed additions to the garden if we want to rebuild the food web and help the songbird population. I think the Rattlesnake Master is as ugly as sin, but folks seem to like that look, and I have to admit that it adds some interesting architecture to the beds. Ugly but useful. The Ironweed is a lot better than the non-native/invasive verbena bonairensus and gives you a lot of the same color and structure. Both of them can handle the worst soils and heat, being native to the area and evolved to handle the environment there.

I have David and it’s beautiful. It doesn’t get as much powdery mildew as other varieties that I have. I also have the backlight which is similar with just a tad powdery mildew.
@HookedandRooted2 ай бұрын
Thanks Meghan! So good to know. I am going to pick up some next spring, and perhaps even the backlight luminary to compare. I have some fashionably early crystal, and while beautiful, it gets terrible powdery mildew. Could be that I have it planted close to other plants too as things grow in they get less airflow. I'll have to work on that next spring.

Steph, I’ve had the Luminary Opalescence Phlox (pink flowers) in my garden for the past 2 seasons. It is absolutely amazing!! It started blooming the last week of June and is STILL currently in bloom!! Not one bit of powdery mildew, and we are very hot and humid here in Southern New Jersey. That white Luminary variety will probably be perfect for you.

Highly recommend exploring the growing number of cultivars of metasequoia (dawn redwood) - there are some dwarfs that could be 6-10 ft in 30 years …. Like tamarack, they come from swamps so they can take the rain we have been getting.. the fall color is a super cool orange

Rattlesnake master and ironweed are very cool native plants. I have the species ironweed and a cultivar and the rattlesnake master in a big planting in a moist area that is mostly native plants or nativars. They have been in the garden for a couple of years and I haven't had any problems with them -- they don't seem to be crazy re-seeders. They are very attractive to a wide variety of pollinators and, at least the species, are big plants. My native plant area is pretty large and thickly planted -- Joe Pye weed, milkweeds, goldenrods, native grasses, penstemons, echinaceas and more. The area has a sort of Piet Oudolf vibe so a bit wild but that works well for the iron weed and rattlesnake master. Fortunately, I don't seem to have any rattlesnakes :) though I am going out today to try to corral some native asters that have splayed all over their neighbors. Zone 7a lower Hudson Valley NY.
@HookedandRooted2 ай бұрын
Hi there! Your garden sounds like a pollinator haven, and lovely! I have seen photos of Piet Oudolf's gardens, and they are spectacular. I was actually close to this nursery again this afternoon and picked up the ironweed. I'm going to plant it right out side my raised bed garden (pollinator garden). Its still budded so I'm excited to see it bloom. Thanks for watching, and for your comment. Happy gardening! 🌱

My David phlox has been blooming non stop from June to September. It occasionally gets a little powdery mildew but it is well worth the effort to clip out the diseased stems. It is by far my most reliable flowering perennial flower I have in my garden!

Would the metal topped birdhouses get too hot in summer if they were in direct sunlight?
@HookedandRooted2 ай бұрын
Its possible, I just looked it up. Seems they would be great for warmth in winter, but may be too hot in summer and it would be best to place them in some shade.
@jcnorton552 ай бұрын
@@HookedandRooted Thanks for checking! Maybe block the opening and use it just as decoration? For me, I would worry too much about how hot it would get in summer, and in winter, there would be zero insulation from night freezing temps. I'm in upper Wisconsin, and we can get crazy high summer temps and even crazier low temps.
