Hi Steph, some great choices of fall shrubs. The goldilocks pine can be made into lollipop like ends of the branches, if you like shaping trees. It makes them look like something out of Alice in wonderland. Ive seen a garden where the owner has chaped many of his conifers into artistic shapes and it really is a show. Witchhazel shrubs are just so beautiful in the winter. The blooms and leaves are just so stunning. They are slow growers but once established, can really take off.....(3rd year). The leaves have burgundy, orange and lime colours and the flowers yellow fluffy sepals with burgundy centres. Jo😊

Hey Steph, if you like witch hazel, you should check out our native shrub - Fothergilla Gardenii. Very similar leaf structure & growth habit. Although they only grow 5x5’. So great for foundation planting; I actually have mine in a large container. Fragrant bottlebrush blooms in April and BEAUTIFUL fall color. It’s my favorite shrub at the moment. And under appreciated!

I grew a lot of penstemon by rooting cuttings. I just dipped them rooting hormone and planted them directly in the ground and they are gorgeous!

We love our witch hazels. The trick is to find one with blooms that are a good size, ideally scented, but with little to zero leaf retention so the blooms are visible without any work. We chose Aurora for flower size for visibility but there are others that are more fragrant

Wow, this is the first time I have seen someone’s garden that is like ours with roots in every hole we dig! Sometimes it so bad we have to cut out really large roots and I worry about the trees. I am in zone 9b so there are plants we can grow and can’t grow that you are using but I am constantly inspired. Thank you 😊 !

Your Purple Penstemon will look lovely beside the hydrangea with the blue lavender in front. I noticed that you don't seem to have any Yews. I have two upright Hicks Yews, one spreading and one pyramidal. The pyramidal Yew is my favourite, doesn't get too big and gives you a Christmas-tree look. Yews are a lovely dark green, unlike most evergreens, can be pruned to shape, and tolerate shade. Very worth considering. Thanks for the great info.

I love the color of your Witch Hazel. We planted a yellow Witch Hazel for the winter blooms as we have Anna's hummingbirds that stay with us all year long here in the PNW. I keep feeders out all year but like to have plants for the hummers to feed on.

Love your videos. Yes I too, buy plants and move them around several times before planting. Sometimes I move them after a season because I didn't like how it worked or played with the others in that area and found a better place.

Now I want a witch hazel. B/c of you I had to teach my self the 5 year plan. I have close to an acre and been adding garden beds every year. I have bought over 1K plants in my 4 years of living in East coast. The growing season is so short compared to Cali. That the 3 month break I had in Cali I had to time to grow my garden and not feel rushed. Here it so short I want to get it done now. But by having that 5 year plan doesnt make it so rushed and that its ok its not finished.

Hi there, no, not in this area. It might get residual spray from the lawn irrigation. But we are just hand watering the newly planted things in this area until they are established, and then relying on rain. We do hand water if it's been dry for a while.

Hi Linda! Sedum type plants root easily. Simply pushing the stem into soil, and keeping it occasionally watered should do it! You will start to feel some resistance while pulling up the stem cuttings once the roots begin to form. Hope this helps 🌱
