Thanks to you sir I repaired/serviced my old hand-me-down mower. It has never sounded more powerful. Symptoms were low revving and not maintaining rpm to almost cutting out. I removed, stripped and cleaned the fuel tank and carburettor and reassembled. Now it runs like an animal!

The best video on this type of Briggs & Stratton engine. Especially the detail about the flatness of the carburetor to fuel tank mating surface. This caused me to assemble and then reassemble the whole thing multiple times. Also, checking the intake tube to the engine is something that also needs to be checked. It's easy when you know how. Thanks for your attention to detail.

Many thanks was having trouble locating these parts.... I appear to have broken a small sponge like gasket / washer around the shaft of the carb throttle goes on the outside of the carb near where the cables attach to govern opening and closing or speed control - this would prevent ingress of dirt down the shaft but nowhere to be seen as a spare and looks tricky to replace help!

On my engine the governor setup was was a little different different and took off the bracket off the front of the engine (used by the 3/8" bolt) to give more room to maneuver the carb off the shaft. I didn't tighten the carb enough and it was leaking when priming. After more tightening I primed the carb, still leaked, more tightening did the job and then I installed the carb back on the engine.

@TheRepairSpecialist Жыл бұрын
First of all thank you for your kind feedback. And yes, usually you just need the diaphragm and gasket 👍
@martyhorten37433 жыл бұрын
1) I recommend hitting with air first, carb spray second, then with air again. The stronger the air the more debris you can easily blow off. 2) I had a problem where the gasket curled away from a screw hole, happened too easy & had to undo and fix. 15:55 Your dead bug is still in the fins 😝
@AlanJan_UK_495 ай бұрын
I replaced my diaphragm and gasket last October and found this video invaluable. Last week I noticed fuel was leaking onto the top of the tank so I've just had it to pieces. I did everything as per your video again but am still getting fuel coming up one of the screw shafts. At 14.59 it looks like your screws have a sealing washer on them ?? Not sure if mine do. If this can't be sorted is there some kind of gasket sealant that can be used. Hope you can help as I'm a bit stuck.
@TheRepairSpecialist5 ай бұрын
Hi. Thank you for your kind feedback, I really appreciate it. The screws aren’t actually in need of a sealing washer. The screws in my vid are just spring washers. If you are getting fuel out of the screw hole then just make sure that the diaphragm is not damaged in that area, the screw is nice and tight, and if that isn’t fixing the issue then consider that the top of the tank can sometimes distort ( the silver machined part where the carb sits on top). If this is the case then you can either buy a new tank ( or a good used one from eBay for much less the price). You can test to see if there is warping on this area by using a straight edge ruler as shown in the vid. This issue with warped tanks is not so common though so make sure you check the other things first. Because the carb is made of plastic they can sometimes have airline splits in them that can cause this type of issue. As mentioned about the gasket, and diaphragm for that matter, give these a thorough check for tiny cracks and splits. Start here and if this doesn’t sort the problem we can go further. Thanks again. Craig 👍👍👍

@@TheRepairSpecialist Thank you Craig. So kind of you to reply & so quickly too ! I thought I'd lost all 5 washers when I first took it to bits last year. Maybe not it seems. The gasket & diaphragm were new last year and new ones again today. I'll have to do the straight edge test at the next opportunity. Pity, as I thought I was doing so well & am now worried that I've used more force than I should have & cracked the plastic.

I've put three new carbs and tanks on mine and on all of them about the 3rd time I use it the carb. doesn't want to prime. I get frustrated because I don't know specifically what to fix so I just buy a new assembly. What is going on with these that I have to fight this battle every year after only a couple of uses? Does the diaphragm go bad that quickly? Is there something I need to make sure is clean after every use?
@TheRepairSpecialist5 ай бұрын
Hi It sounds like you're having some frustrating issues with your Briggs and Stratton 500 series engine. If your carburetor and fuel tank assembly keep failing after just a few uses, there are a few common culprits to consider: 1. **Fuel Quality**: Ethanol in gasoline can attract moisture and cause corrosion. Try using ethanol-free fuel or add a fuel stabilizer to prevent this. 2. **Fuel Contamination**: Dirt, debris, or water in the fuel can clog the carburetor. Ensure you're using clean fuel and consider adding a fuel filter. 3. **Storage Practices**: Storing the mower with fuel in it can lead to degradation and deposits. At the end of the season, either drain the fuel system or run the engine until it stops. 4. **Carburetor Issues**: Small passages in the carburetor can get clogged easily. Regular cleaning and using high-quality fuel can help. 5. **Primer Bulb Problems**: Check the primer bulb for any cracks or wear and ensure it’s functioning correctly. 6. **Fuel Tank Ventilation**: A clogged fuel cap vent can create a vacuum and prevent fuel flow. Clean or replace the cap if needed. By addressing these areas, you can hopefully reduce the need for frequent replacements. Good luck, and happy mowing! Craig
