Little info showing different starter gears and ring gears used on Briggs & Stratton engines. Always a good idea to check your gear lash when installing a new starter gear to avoid flywheel ring gear damage.

Would like to add, the ring gear IS NOT part of the casting as stated in the video. Its like almost any real engines flywheel ring gear, it needs to be heated and sweat on. Gears that fine are almost never cast. Large teeth maybe but thats a machined ring and pressed/sweat on the cast flywheel

Great video, thanks man!!! I have a 1975 Toro 8-32 snowblower (Briggs and Stratton) with cast-iron (or steel, not sure) flywheel and it's an absolute beast to pull over by hand. I finally got my hands on a 120V plug-in starter but has the nylon gear on it. You're right, the gears do not mesh. I will order me a metal gear and try that. Thanks again!!

Agreed with you on this one. I got a riding lawnmower that had a nylon gear on the fly wheel part of it the ring gear I replaced well tried to replace the starter gear with a metal one clean the teeth right off the fly wheel. It already had broken teeth so I would’ve had to replace it in a couple of years anyway So im having to replace more then I needed to Thank you for explanation on what went wrong on my mower Trying to teach myself about small engines.

My daughter brought me the starter from her 18.5hp mower, with the 16 tooth plastic gear, and worn teeth. According to the manual, it should take the 14 tooth metal gear. She sent me pictures of the flywheel, and it definitely looks like cast iron. The starter had a number on it, which matches the plastic gear. She has had the mower for a couple of years, and bought it used. I'm beginning to think someone put the wrong starter on it.

I'm at a loss bought a older troy bilt 16hp hydro with the B&S vanguard and the aluminum 16t starter gear is rounded but everything I'm finding is either 14t or 16t plastic/metal any thoughts thanks

I haven't seen an aluminum starter gear myself so not 100% sure. I suggest looking up PARTSTREE.COM then use engine model type and code to trace down the specific part number.

I have a 12.5 hp b&g model number: 285707 & type: 0115 - 15 parts tree doesn't have that type number on their data base. Are any of these gear types interchangeable by diameter (?) or how do I find out which of the 3 ring gear type fits my engine?
@willyck9483 жыл бұрын
part number seems to be similar to 285707 0114 which is older L head vertical shaft synchro balanced briggs they usually ran a plastic gear bindics either Briggs & Stratton 497606 or Briggs & Stratton 495878 Plastic Gear is the same Briggs & Stratton 280104

I’m making a racemower of my Westwood T1600 but my starter gear is always losing his teeth, how can I prevent this?
@willyck9482 жыл бұрын
Check the flywheel for any damage / missing teeth, if its aluminum ring gear than it should take a plastic starter gear. You can verify part number for the starter gear at a briggs dealer website like PARTSTREE.COM I usually replace the entire bindics assembly as there's china parts that aren't the same as oem parts.

How do I tell if I have a flywheel that uses a plastic gear? I got a motor that didn’t have a starter and I don’t wanna screw up the flywheel
@willyck948 Жыл бұрын
If it has an aluminum ring gear than plastic starter gear is the way to go. I recommend going to Partstree.com then select briggs tab and entering model type and code to bring up the proper parts brakedown for the starter and gear

The number of teeth is the most important thing to match up. Most metal pinion gears are 14 tooth.. Most 16 tooth are plastic, but there is a metal one for older Roper riding mowers and the such.

Are you still out there? I have a couple questions i'd like to ask someone that knows about Briggs starters and gears.

I guess I'm out there🤣 I'm more familiar with flatheads though. Best bet is searching by engine model. I like the partstree website myself.
@misterbulger5 жыл бұрын
do you know the number of teeth on those?
@willyck9485 жыл бұрын
I never counted teeth. Plastic starter gears are only used for alluminum ring gears. Steel starter gears can be used on either cast iron or plastic ring gears. Only suggestion is to match original equipment and double check the gear teeth clearance before attempting to crank an engine after installing used parts. The blower cover or valve cover should have model/type/code for parts break down information

14 teeth on the metal, 16 tooth on the plastic
