I love how he's all serious and really deep and into it at the begining, just drinking and telling us his story; but then, when he starts singing, it's all "happy", and just makes death seem so lovely and nice, but most importantly, necessary. (Plus, the way he says "oh we'll see it, we'll see it" and other phrases with that tone is just really amazing, really Connor like).

my best friend died just about almost two years ago (my comment a year after yours, Cheyanne). he had this thing with the number 22, which i haven't stopped seeing since he died. right now your comment has 22 likes. people can make fun of me as much as they want. it has nothing to do with him giving me a sign that he's watching over me or something like that because the number appears, just as often, if not more, in regard to / in proximity to / etc. fucked up stuff, same as he described it, though with beautiful things too, don't get me wrong. though this isn't fucked up, your comment and the 22 likes I mean. this is life. life is death. and it's all okay. it'll all be okay.

How did re-watching this video after all these years just make me almost cry? WTF?
@tombie1513 жыл бұрын
This video makes me cry, every single time. In a sense, we are all on that plane, plummeting to our deaths, and this song is a plea to embrace what little time we have and live as the beautiful, enlightened humans we were born as, and to disallow fear to rule our lives. There's a lot more to it than that, but that's what I understand to be the gist of if.

This song and video fills me with a profound love for humanity and joy to be alive... It so beautifully captures that even though we are insignificant and technically will never have any impact on anything, we can still be happy. In their final moments, they are able to express who they are, and be kind, be reckless, and love without being afraid, like when the lady leans her head on the guys shoulder, and he hugs her back and they're friends, and how that guy and the lady sitting next to him just have all the goddamn alcohol they want and when those boys start kissing, and how they all put their hands up together, and all hug total strangers at the end without being embarrassed omg this is what it should mean to be human! That sense of universal love and togetherness, and bonding without knowing anyone... and they all sing together... Fucks sake, im crying.

The gentleman wasn't intentionally coarse or rude (we've all flown before) but was so cool to shed a pleasant light on the situation when the time came. A whole plane full of people who've realized how little we are and fooled to think we can control anything. They've accepted it. Love this video and song.

oberst gives me faith that people are still writing relevant, eloquent lyrics that need to be said. his comments on the isolation of modern life are awesome, whilst not sacrificing the melody. We must blend into the choir Sing as static with the whole We must memorize nine numbers and deny we have a soul And in this endless race for property and privilege to be won We must run, we must run, we must run honestly this inspires me to write songs.

So there was this woman and She was, uh, on an airplane and She's flying to meet her fiancé Sailing high above the largest ocean On planet earth and she was seated Next to this man who She had tried to start conversations And really the only thing She'd heard him say was to order his bloody mary And she's sitting there and she's reading This really arduous magazine article about a Third world country that she couldn't Even pronounce the name of and She's feeling very bored and very despondent And then, suddenly there's this huge mechanical failure and one of the engines gave out And they started just falling, thirty thousand feet And the pilot's on the microphone and he's saying "I'm sorry, I'm sorry, Oh My God, I'm Sorry" And apologizing and she looks at the man and she says "Where are we going?" and he looks at her and he says "We're going to a party, it, it's a birthday party It's your birthday party, happy birthday darling We love you very, very, very, very, very, very, very much." And then, uh, he starts humming this little tune and, uh, it kind of goes like this We must talk in every telephone, get eaten off the web We must rip out all the epilogues from the books that we have read Into the face of every criminal strapped firmly to a chair We must stare, we must stare, we must stare We must take all the medicines too expensive now to sell Set fire to the preacher who is promising us hell Into the ear of every anarchist that sleeps but doesn't dream We must sing, we must sing, we must sing (And it'll go like this) While my mother waters plants my father loads his gun He says "Death will give us back to God Just like the setting sun Is returned to the lonesome ocean" And then they splashed into the deep blue sea! And it was a wonderful splash! We must blend into the choir, sing as static with the whole We must memorize nine numbers and deny we have a soul And in this endless race for property and privilege to be won We must run, we must run, we must run We must hang up in the belfry where the bats and moonlight laugh We must stare into a crystal ball and only see the past Into the caverns of tomorrow with just our flashlights and our love We must plunge, we must plunge, we must plunge (and the we'll get down there, way down to the bottom of everything And then we'll see it, we'll see it, we'll see it) Oh my morning's coming back The whole world's waking up All the city buses swimming past I'm happy just because I found out I am really no one
@95lewiscameron11 жыл бұрын
These are really some of the greatest lyrics I've ever read. The line about anarchists who sleep but do not dream gives me shivers every time I hear it. Up until I heard this I never realised Bright Eyes might write lyrics of this kind.

When I was growing up, I regularly needed dangerous surgeries that had low success rates in order to ensure that I would survive at all. People show remorse for that time in my life, but I look back on it fondly. As an adult, I feel so powerless to deal with mundane social or lifestyle issues, and fear death more than ever. It was liberating to embrace the short life I had already lived. People don't understand how easy it is to enjoy almost everything when you aren't promised anything.

I don’t fear much. The only thing that frightens me is death. Not the pain of it. Or it eventually happening. I’m afraid of what comes after. I’m almost certain that’s it’s eternal darkness. Nothingness for eternity. An eternity that we won’t even feel the passing of. This song however, this song makes it less stressful and helps me accept it.
