Beautiful presentation. The explanation of "mobile", "immobile" nutrients and how this affects the progression of the deficiency is the key for diagnosis. Missing almost everywhere else.

I've seen alot of comments stating that images should have been added. Though that would have been a plus I understood everything. I believe this video was for persons who already have some basic understanding of how the deficiency looks and just wanted to match them to the specific nutrient. Being a college student, I get overwhelmed with slideshow so the talking was refreshing to me. Creator, please ignore the negative comments.

@Mulberrysmile6 жыл бұрын
A note: These deficiency symptoms can also be caused by root invading (root knot) nematodes that interfere with the uptake of all essential elements. This is one reason to change the plants you grow to a new place each season. Besides planting a nematode resistant crop, when you pull out an old plant, be sure to get as much root material as you can find if the plant was infested. Do not put those roots directly into compost. One can reduce nematode populations in the soil by spreading the soil out to be exposed to the sun. I do this with the infested plants I pull out, too. I hang them on a south facing fence. In places with bad infestations, it may be best to bring in new soil and restrict planting of susceptible plants to large pots. Continue planting non susceptible plants in the soil and over time the nematode population in that area will decline.
@adenbuford73964 жыл бұрын
Part of the first step should be to check and adjust the PH of the water along with adding the nutrient if applicable. Certain nutrients lock out at different levels of PH. A well run hydroponic system's PH should fluctiate within the appropiate range so specific nutrients can be optimally absorbed. Just adding more of a specific nutrient can lock out other nutrients.

What if there was preexisting problems on lower leaves and new growth also has problems. It could either be mobile nutrient that's deficient or a new immobile problem that's an addition to whatever affecting lower leaves. Gets complicated.
@ZipGrowInc2 жыл бұрын
Than ks for your question Andy. Mobile nutrient deficiencies will present their damage on the lower leaves as they pull the nutrients up to the growing tip. So you will see a healthy growing tip with damaged lower leaves. An immobile nutrient deficiency will present itself on the new growth of the plant and the lower leaves will remain healthy as the plant is unable to move the nutrients to the new growth. If you are seeing damage on both the lower leaves and the new growth, this could demonstrate a larger scale problem in the environmental conditions of your growing space. It's important to analyze your environmental conditions and water quality parameters such as pH and EC before deciding it is a specific nutrient deficiency. It is tricky to address this concern without photos or a deeper understanding of your growing environment; however, our video "Kemptville Greenhouse VPD Explained" may help you determine some next steps in solving your problem. Beginning hydroponics problem not addressed here: my lettuce is growing too fast, elongated big leaves, stretched out and falling over stalks looks nothing like a “head of lettuce” and very frail. Wilts if I look at it wrong. However roots are very clean and quite robust both air and water. Outdoor NFT , with about 40 % direct sun shade via white overhead corrugated panels. My inexperienced guess is that ambient temperature is too high, usually high 70s, but decent air flow. Humidity runs about 52 %. I’m pretty sure my nutrient formulation per volume is correct but not positive. Will look for nutrient diagnostic key as mentioned, otherwise any advise would be great. Thank you.
@ZipGrowInc3 жыл бұрын
We are specialists in truly vertical growing systems so NFT is not our forte. However, we would recommend you look into your VPD (Vapor Pressure Deficit) to ensure the humidity and temperature is in range, and make sure there is enough aeration of the water and sufficient dissolved oxygen levels for nutrient transfer. If you want to try growing in towers instead we have lots of beginner references on our channel and our website for support. Towers with the Matrix Media system are a much more forgiving media and less risk of root rot. Hope this helps!

Hi Ethan, this is by far the best video I have seen on diagnosing a plants health and how to fix it. I am growing lettuce in my basement using aquaponics and it looks like I have a slight calcium deficiency which would make sense since I have poor airflow in my basement with no fan. I am going to set a fan up to see if it clears up. The only thing that doesn't add up is that the dead spots on the tips of the leaves seem to only appear on the tips of the old growth and not the new growth, which as an immobile nutrient should be the other way around right? What are you thoughts?

This is going to depend on the crop specifically, but in a lot of cases this type of Deficiency has more to do with airflow and VPD than the actual nutrients present. I would start by looking up our blog posts on VPD and KZbin videos and see if increasing airflow helps.

HI I am a real newby in hydroponics. I live in South Africa and at present we have hot temperatures and low humidity. I planted some lettuce , tomato and basil into a hydroponic bottle garden. It has been 3 weeks and I find no increase in plant growth . In particular I find that the tomato plants in a soil pot almost 3 times larger . I am using a 19-8-16 nutrition that has all the micro -nutrients in it. The lettuce have grown longer stems and no or very little leaves. The basil is the same size as when I planted them. Each plant is planted in a separate bottle. They have at least 3 -4 hours of sunlight and almost 7-8 hours of day light. From what little I understand it might be because of nutrient lockout. So I adjusted the ph about 5 days ago and have no improvements. I was wondering if I have too much nutrients in the solution .I don't have a ec meter ( I have one ordered online hoping to have it in a week or so). Please be kind to see if you cam help

This was a very thorough video on deficiencies and very good explanations of them, which is more than most do in their videos. But one thing I have yet to see anywhere is a 'completely' thorough and very specific "show-and-tell". Just like if it were a study done at a University or a science project. Where if you have a few examples of a control crop with no deficiencies, a very healthy plant. Then you have a couple of the same type of crops of each deficiency, that were purposely insufficient or withdrawn from the feeding schedule. (e.g. one crop purposely given insufficient amounts of Nitrogen, another insufficient amounts of Mag, etc.) This way you would have a few examples that were very specific and apparent. Also, where some of the examples would have multiple deficiencies that are common together do to lock-out, such as a pH lock-out or other. I feel that video would easily get millions of views and become the "go-to" for everyone who has questions in the subject. Just sayin :)

Hi Stephen, Thickening of leaves is not generally considered a sign of deficiency. It would be more associated with environmental conditions. When plants are stressed or exposed to extremes they'll respond by forming a thicker cuticle in order to protect their cells.
