OMG . . The value of this video is massive. Just reviewing the first first ten miles and seeing those hills has made me realise that its going to be a four part race for my first marathon in Brighton 2023. Keeping it easy and even putting myself slower by two pacing groups for the first 15km making sure I get the hydration, fuelling and breathing right whilst fighting off any mental daemons. Then 15km-29km start to move forward in to my usual long run strategy knowing the worse is past me. 29km-37km is that dreaded part of the race where its starts breaking down for you if you got anything wrong but at least I wont being doing the dreaded power station bit this year. Actually, the new bit that avoids the power station (is an extra mile from Preston Park up to Patcham on the A23 and then back down so that will be an extra mile of hill so I need to factor that in) and then it that final Park Run bit where I am hoping the crowd and dreaming about food will bring me home. Anyway, great video Chris !

Glad it's helped you to think your race strategy through, Paul. The trick is not to get carried away at the start when 90% of the runners will start off too fast and suffer later. The course changes look interesting and for someone like me who has run it twice before, it'll be a welcomed change.

Great recap. I suggest making a more concentrated Tailwind solution (e.g 6 scoops in a 500ml soft flask) and making that last the whole race. Then top up on water during aid stations to ensure you get sufficient amount of liquid.

Sounds like everything went smoothly Chris apart from the cramp but like you say it's likely down to the lack of water and salt. Glad those next%s paid off it was a huge gamble. Huge kudos to you mate! 😎🤘🏻

Fantastic performance, you can certainly go even quicker in my opinion based on your half marathon PB and the fact you ran such a large negative split. This shows there is minutes you can shave off I believe. All the best

Yes mate, you can run faster, without injury. The discipline shown at Brighton and the control to limit injury throughout that race, indicates that you are ready both mentally and physically for another crack. This is exciting news. Great summation of the race Chris, and you've identified a couple of things to work on. Looking forward to your announcement of where the next marathon will be. Cheers! Phil

Love it when a plan works out 💪 that's a very impressive negative split. Glad the Tailwind worked for you too. Im swearing by it just now for long runs. I used 700ml over two bottles with 8 scoops in total plus a litre of water in a hydration pack. Sounds a lot but followed their instructions and helped me a lot at Loch Ness.

Congratulations Chris. Paced like a professional. 🎉🎉 That inside knowledge of the course was a massive help. Having a race plan is one thing but sticking to that plan takes discipline so huge well done there. The industrial estate section is ugly - absolutely terrible in fact. Why can they not change it? Pleased tailwind got you through. Not ever used it myself because I don't ever carry water on runs. I prefer to rely on aid stations at the big events for 95% of my fuelling. Please don't take this the wrong way but Brighton 2022 is your marathon PB despite what you've done previously. Treadmill marathons should never count towards PB’s because it's not proper running. If you only run in a treadmill then accept the PB but outdoor & treadmill are completely different. Can you run faster? Absolutely you can. Think a sub 3:45 (or faster) is well within your capabilities.
@HereWeAreRunning
@HereWeAreRunning 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks Colin. 3:45 has always been a time that I thought I should be capable of and hopefully I'll achieve it one day.

Watching the race vlog and this recap was a joy. Your hard work and planning paid off. Negative split = more satisfying than a faster time that is not negatively split (IMHO) Overtaking knackered people on the second 13 miles is more fun than it should be! Each to their own about nutrition /hydration - experience and experimentation. I have a habit of being a tad dehydrated at the end of a full marathon - I find the thought of water whilst running quite nauseating! I am now drinking more pre race. Nutrition - I am forcing myself to take somethi g 'tasty' cranberry Jordans bar = nice, tasty and non melt! "no nay never" gels! You will go faster in another marathon, you are on your way to breaking 3.45.

Hi Chris, congratulations on Brighton. I have been watching your Edinburgh Marathon video time and again in part for preparation for May 29th. Training had been going well until week 8 when i tested positive for Covid. Bummer! However, i had the exercise bike and did some cross training while i self isolated, the infection did not get me down and after 10 days i was back out running again and feeling right on top. Starting week 12 today with a 20 mile long run on Sunday, my long route takes me along the west coast so im hoping for a high wind to get me used to that head wind you experienced during the race. Iam both excited and nervous in equal measure.
@HereWeAreRunning
@HereWeAreRunning 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks Tommy. Good to hear that Covid didn't set your training back too much. Hopefully on the 29th May you get perfect calm conditions but definitely good to do some training runs in a bit of a breeze, just to get used to what it might be like.

Really interesting, glad you did well. Good luck with your sub 3:50 challenge... hydration is a difficult to get right. You can drink more and have loads of fluid sloshing around or have to stop for a toilet break! At the end of the day you are running a marathon - so blood is carrying oxygen to your legs, heart and lungs - your digestive system is not working at an optimum. I think you just have to get used to running dehydrated - it's a bit like a boxer going into a ring and trying not to get hit in the face - it's sort of inevitable, just get better at dealing with it... that's my strategy anyway. You do you. :o)

With the tailwind try making a concentrated solution like a gel. You can mix say 3 scoops to make a gel like mix and then when you want to take some get some water from the aid station to save having to mix it.

@HereWeAreRunning
@HereWeAreRunning 2 жыл бұрын
Thank you. I've only run in them 3 times prior to the marathon and only once during this training block when I did a half marathon in them. But when I used them in the marathon, they were fine. I think before I was trying to change my running form a bit to suit the shoe, whereas in the race I didn't worry about that and just ran as I normally do.

Really interesting that the alphaflys didn’t cause any issues. I remember on a podcast that you said it wasn’t a good idea to use if you pronate. Do you feel your gait has changed or just less pronation with the pace?
@HereWeAreRunning
@HereWeAreRunning 2 жыл бұрын
I don't think my gait has really changed and I still over pronate and I'm pretty sure that if I wore neutral shoes all the time, then it would significantly increase my risk of injury. However, one run every now and then, whilst a risk, isn't necessarily going to cause an injury and I think I proved that wearing the Next% V2's at Brighton. They are back in the box now and will only come out for key races.

Chris - I just re-watched this. You cannot compare a treadmill PB time with a "real world" marathon time. In a marathon you have air flow and wind resistance and hills and dodging other runners -- so the road marathon will always be slightly slower, so don't compare your road time vs your treadmill time. Two different "sports" in a way.
