Brian tears this song up! John is thumping the bassline, the drums are perfect throughout and of course, Freddie's voice is great as it always is. The best way to start an album. Queen chose the order of their songs on their albums with a lot of attention to detail because they believed that an album was to be listened to from start to finish and it should be a logical progression.

What blows my mind about so much music from back then is that so many bands would have these crushing, metal-like songs, that were WAYYY different from any music that came before-hand, and then the same album would have an incredibly soft and beautiful song on it. It was such an incredibly experimental time for music.

AND you need to watch Brian (our dear Dr. May) play this at Wembley on Queen's 1986 tour. It was filmed 2 nights in a row, one of those nights in the rain. Just fantastic to watch (& here on KZbin). Any of Queen's first 7 albums are great. The rest after that are still good, just not _AS_ good as the first 7. (IMO, of course). "It's Late" off of News of the World, is my second favorite behind Bohemian Rhapsody. News of the World and Queen 1 are my favorites. Such a unique band with songs ranging from something that sounds like the Lennon Sisters (Bring Back That Leroy Brown) to something that sounds like Metallica (Modern Times Rock & Roll) to something that sounds as unique as _THEY_ are (Get Down Make Love).

Liar and the very heavy Son and Daughter. Loads of metal artist drew inspiration from the first 3 Queen albums, for example Judas Priest, Megadeath, Metallica Iron Maiden, Anthrax, Queensryche, Van Halen, Saxon, Twisted Sister, Dream Theater, Ygnwie Malmsteen ext. ext. Dream Theater has done a nice cover on Tenement Funster, Flick Of The Wrist and Lily of The Valley from this album.

The first three Queen albums are so unique - nothing like it before or since - even by Queen. Certainly 'progressive' without the requisite synth wizardry the genre implies. But ground-breaking vocals, truly creative songcraft that defies categorization, and incredible, underappreciated guitar work from Brian May. For me, Sheer Heart Attack was their peak even though most of their hits came afterwards.

I have, only twice, but it was a dream come true to finally hear Roger and Brian play (Nashville and Charlotte) and AL's voice is astounding and beautiful. Yes, we all know he can't fill Freddie's shoes and we wish to God that was Freddie on stage singing, but AL is allowing old people like me to hear this band again! I'm so old that I've been to many more concerts than I can count or remember now and these two concerts were superior to any I've ever seen before, in spite of being the hits with only a couple of deep cuts! One of my favorite albums for sure. Their 1st seven albums have been in my regular rotation since the late 70's. The production is pretty raw on the 1st album, but the 1st through the 5th are all chock full of the no-holds-barred "Bohemian Rhapsody" vibe. The 6th & 7th start to veer into more traditional territory but still have a very healthy dose of Queen's traditional flair & originality. And their's lots of good stuff in the rest of their catalog, but IMO the 1st seven are classics.

Great reaction as always lads. By far one of my favourite albums of Queen. I really liked your comment that this song and the band was underrated as this in my mind can be arritbuted to their Hot Space album from 1982. I feel that that album was 5 years ahead of its time of release in 1982 and considered a flop for Queen as it was so different to anything they had previously recorded. Had it been released in around 1987 it may have had a different outcome with a younger audience, maybe? It also has a similar sound to a lot of pop-rock oriented songs from the last decade. Sheer heart attack has everything of differing genres and was Queen finally finding their true sound without the aid of the synthesizer. Hot Space was synth heavy and lead them onto bigger sounds, I'm glad Queen experimented with everything. I look forward to further album reactions to Queen, I hope you cover them all.
