Another problem was how quickly they grew, which for a cash intensive business as a hollywood themed restaurant was never a good idea. Especially since they should have spend some money on improving food and service quality.
@DeathStarLuke4 жыл бұрын
They expanded on the assumption that demand would scale with their expansion. It's a classic business mistake. As you mentioned, the brand was diluted with so many restaurants, and the other critical factor in deciding their fate was the quality of food and service. It just wasn't good enough to support the demand they needed once they underwent mass expansion. They should have limited themselves to maybe 5 locations across the country, and perhaps 5 more internationally. It's a solid concept that I think would still be thriving today if public opinion would not have soured on it. Once your brand becomes tarnished it's nearly impossible to come back from that.
@heyrod594 жыл бұрын
You're not wrong about that......

More locations also meant diluting the quality of the memorabilia that was on display. Some places it was stuff from movies nobody cared about. Also, the food sucked. When the novelty wears off, it is a restaurant. And restaurants need menus and quality food people want to return for.

Kleavers and all the sports teams. Heck, look how the price of taxi medallions plummeted when Uber any Lyft started. People took out mortgages against their house to buy a medallion and it dropped hundreds of thousands of dollars over night. Many owners of taxi medallions committed suicide. It was very sad. Catastrophic loss can happen to the best of us. The Government and tax payers can not bail everyone out. Risk is part of the game, and a reason not all of us want to play the game, so I should not be required to bail out everyone by higher taxes.

Love your videos, Jake. I only visited a Planet Hollywood once - during a school trip to Honolulu in the summer of 2009. (The adults chose this stop - it was NOT my choice.) I remember thinking how sh*tty it was and wondering why, in the middle of a gorgeous and unique island, we went to a chain restaurant. We had a shortened menu since we were a large group and I ordered the only meatless option on it, basic pasta with Mariana sauce. It’s pretty hard to mess up, but it came out cold and was of similar quality to frozen dinners I ate a lot of. That’s my only Planet Hollywood memory. So, yeah ... the fact that my experience occurred weeelllll past their heyday checks out.

Mostly on a expected and predictable basis, as a restraunt chain starts to flounder and go into its death spiral, the quality of the food, the service, and the experience will match the ferocity of the freefall. Steak and Shake in my city that had been here 30 years, suddenly started racking up health code violations left and right, having shit workers, and was closed 3-4 months out of every year. Everything from poor hygiene to rats to roaches to broken cooking equipment, you name it. As a result the chances of getting a poorly cooked food or some horrible horror show of a burger increased exponentially. I stopped going there because every single time I went the burger looked like someone mopped the floor with it, and they raised the prices while serving shit food to boot. Eventually it closed down again, and it stayed closed for good. It was then demolished after the building rotted for 5 years and they built a Panera Bread over it. Steak and Shakes all over the country seem to be collapsing in on themselves with the same stories going around.

I was a teenager through the mid and late 90's, and REALLY into movies. So much so that it became my career as an adult, even if I'm not rich and famous doing it. My family took 3-4 vacations to Orlando, Florida during that era, and went to the Planet location there every time. It always was a chain that fit my interests like a glove, and I sought other locations out if I was ever near a city with one. In 1998 I moved to Orlando, and the Planet there became a semi-regular place for me to visit. And if not visit, simply pass by a lot visiting Downtown Disney. Even as the chain faded between 1999 and 2003, I still loved going into my local Planet to relive all of the great 90's memories that I had. To this day, I have pins from a handful of Planet locations that don't exist anymore, such as Indianapolis, Phoenix, Key West, Mall of America, Dublin, San Diego, Toronto, Amsterdam, London and Dublin. I also still have an embroidered leather and denim jacket that was worn by one of the celebrity attendees at the grand opening of the Orlando location around 1994. Even though it's much too big for me now. But Planet was something that I still wish was around in the same ways that it was in the 90's. Was the food spectacular? No, but it was decent. Was ever prop amazing? No, and in fact I'm almost 100% sure that certain "props" were manufactured reproductions. A few that come to mind are the naked Sylvester Stallone frozen in a cylinder of ice from the movie "Demolition Man" and the life-size Arnold Schwarzenegger in "Terminator" getup that greeted most guests at entrances. My favorite prop that I still wonder where it ended up, was the full-size queen alien, from the movie "Aliens" that was perched over the main open area in Orlando. Man was that cool! I also remember attending the premiere of the Indianapolis location, where I had some family, and seeing Chris Farley doing cartwheels on the red carpet, and chugging bottles of milk like the Indy drivers do after a win. Chris died just weeks after that premiere too. The remaining Planet locations now? Well...they confuse me. They're just not like the Planet from the 90's. Which probably had to happen somewhat. Although I'm surprised that they haven't had a resurgence with all of the 80's/90's retro cool craze in recent years. For those years though, I really loved Planet Hollywood.

@@falkortechnologies8039 I drove by the Myrtle Beach Planet while there for work in 2003 and again in 2004, but didn't get a chance to go in. Sad to see so many places like that that I remember now gone. I can think of a handful of other franchises that I miss too, such as the Virgin Megastores. Those were fun places Again I was partial to the one here in Orlando right near our Planet. I'd see many a movie next door at the AMC theaters, and either be looking around in there for a quite a while beforehand, or after. That store was enormous, with its own DJ, cafe, and any edition, format, or box set of anything you could think of. I'm told the outdoor cantilevered seating area for the cafe acutally originally could be raised and lowered, and Aerosmith performed on it during the store's opening. But as Planet goes, I randomly was at several locations when events were going on, and saw celebrities at them. Good times I'll always miss.

I'd like to see an updated take on a movie themed restaurant, but focused on classic movie trivia instead of celebrity nonsense. The food has to be really good to justify going back more than once. Recently my mom wanted to go to that Bubba Gump restaurant for her birthday, she enjoyed that the waiter played trivia guessing games with us a bit before the food arrived, but most importantly the food was good.

I actually went to Planet Hollywood in NYC when I was about 12. My middle school had a big end of the year field trip for each grade, and that year it was to go see the Blue Man Group. When the show was over, we were suppored to have lunch somewhere else but plans fell through, so we had it there as a last resort. They had a really bizarre way of dealing w/ a big group of ppl. They would make your food, then they would shout it out and you would have to respond. So if someone ordered the same thing as you, they might've gotten first even if you ordered it before them. Really strange, and the food wasn't great either tbh.

Otherwise, this really is Planet Hollywood and the world is a stage being fully recorded at all times with movement and activities tracked profiling each individual by the stupid phones. I used to think it would be cool to become cyborgs, fly fast, and live in a dystopian one world order, but you have to be asleep to be in the dream for it's a nightmare in reality. I could imagine myself on a spaceship with high speed internet only observing Earth never to even visit again. I thought I would correct one bit of information. The original Planet Hollywood New York restaurant was located at 140 W. 57th St. New York, NY 10019. On the same street just down a few stores you would also find the now closed Motown Café. PH would move to time square years later to a massive location and then size down to its current spot in the same area.

Came here to correct this also. Planet Hollywood and the Hard Rock were both on the same stretch of 57th Street. The Sydney one is still kinda there, Its called Star Bar and its more of a Pub/Resturant/Nightclub now. The Cinema is still there as are most of the props and the Cocktail Bar was still exactly the same as it was on Opening day last time i was there, mind you that was probably 5 years ago now

I remember visiting that place in 2000 on a trip to Sydney. It was Planet Hollywood then. Was one of the coolest kids in school when I came back and said I'd been there. It was still Planet Hollywood in 2004 when I came back again- double cool for being twice. The monorail voiceover even said which stop to get off at.

@Gerd Wiesler The cinema was like a 30 seater that was usesd for private showings and is literally across the road from the largest Cinema Complex in the country. The food at the place was really good last time i went, which was again like 5 years ago as I moved away from Sydney

I still remember opening night of the Sydney one. 2DayFM broadcasting live, Stallone, Bruce Willis, Jackie Chan, Charlie Sheen, Van Damme, Danny Glover and many others all on stage. It was awesome. George St was closed. Massive party atmosphere. I went there many times.

I went to the one in Niagra Falls and the one in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina as a kid in the late nineties. They were cool to look at honestly but the waits for tables were long, the food was absolute crap and super overpriced and all the loud, sweaty tourists crammed into the place constantly made it a one time only kind of thing, I'd be curious to go to one now though, to see how they've modernized over the last 20 years. Great vid man, as always. You should look into the NASCAR Cafe too, similar story to this place, I went there several times as a kid. 👍

Visited the one near times square a couple of years ago and I enjoyed my experience. I'm not from the U.S, so it seemed to fit the spectacle of times square. You're going for the spectacle, not for fine dining. Prices were also much lower than other restaurants in the area, and the service was outstanding with their staff. Stumbled on this video after the fact, never knew they had issues. My experience summed up, food was excellent even the dessert, service was outstanding, the environment of the restaurant was also quite nice. Walked in with no expectations, and now I plan on returning someday if NYC sorts out its political situation. Bubba Gump was awful never go there.

Yes I think that kind of restaurant model does well with a few locations at Times Square, Disney, Hollywood and not much elsewhere.

The bubba Gump in Disney world and the one in Gatlinburg TN was really good. Maybe it's because they don't know how to cook it right lol but both times I went was great and I hate seafood.

Judson Moore I figured they didn’t exist anymore because I started seeing less and less locations towards the end of 90s lol.

A very high-quality documentary! That is one of several videos you made that is at the same level as the ones we can find on traditional tv channels and Netflix! Keep up this very good work! P.s.: I vaguely remember there was a Planet Hollywood in downtown Montreal, but it didn't last very long...

It's quite crazy how luck can run out with time even with well known celebrities involved. The quality of the product and service matter more I guess.
