Pre or Post 2017 Brompton Bars?

Last year, I purchased a second-hand Brompton ( I got courage after watching many of your videos). I have a 2002 .....definitely with the old handlebars...and gear shifter....and....and Thank you very much for all your videos. I cannot find a shop to take a look at it here in town, so many thanks for your how-to videos.

Oh dear, I will now have to check the bars of every Brompton I see! I am fairly confident that I will easily spot the vertical upright section of the old bars compared with the slightly splayed shape of the new ones!

Does it lead to an "S like" final position? This is very interesting, i find the old M position too high for me.. Could u please measure the length from the hinge to the top of the handle bar (i mean where hands stand but above the mid bolt)?

That should be approx 4 cm lower than a pre 2017 M tipe (stem+handlebar) and it should allow the use of new shifters.. Am I right?

Thank you for the info. I just got an M6R, with a serial number starting with 21, and I was a little confused after measuring the installed grips at 120mm. They were also stuck on vs. clamped on. Not sure if they're just friction fit or glued. Other identifying features like the curves, height of the handle bar, and integrated brake levers indicates it's a post 2017 handle bar. It's just the 120mm grip measurement has me wondering whether I should go with the 130mm or the 100mm Brooks grips. On a side note, this bike also came with Schwalbe Marathons vs the standard Marathon Racers. I'm guessing with some parts being hard to come by, they're piecing together bikes with whatever they can get a hold of.

Hi ,, just a quick question . I've seen a 2nd hand flat bar c line for sale good price. Can it be changed to a H bar medium without too much difficulty. I do find the flat bar abit " stretchie "

Does the change in design also change the recommended replacement mileage? I know the older ones were rated for 5000 miles (p28, Section K, 2010 manual) before they, along with many other aluminium parts, should be changed.

My 2013 Brompton (serial number 13...) has a 33.5 cm stem, not a 31cm one. I remember the longer stem was an option for longer riders like me. It does have the aluminium non-integrated brake shifters and glue-on (I think) handlebar grips which are 115mm. I'm thoroughly confused... So I think I have an H-type?

In the meantime I managed to find a pair of new foam handlebar grips. This was a real quest to find a pair!

My 2019, I think (I bought it in Cph. during the Covid crisis?), Lightweight has the new handlebar, which I found out when I tried to find some nice new, "Brompton printed" leather grips for it, and had problems making them fit the available length! I am trying to make it lighter, also with new, special mudguard clamps, replacing the original and "heavy metal" clamps, made from carbon for the titanium struts, and a new titanium axle in front (It may have been titanium already, but now it is nice and yellow, as my bike! I have also got a new, black - long titanium seat post with a ring on top for the saddles mount and angle, wasting the original heavy and complicated Brompton clamp and its weight! As a tall guy my bike was sold with a 600 mm post as standard, so I have problems making it fit my B&W transport box. I may try to find a shorter one, to see if it is possible for daily use?

I have a question and sorry if it’s a silly one. Tue serial number sticker on the frame has gone. Is there a way of knowing the age of my Brompton with just the frame number?

Simple. Just cut through the seat post and count the rings.

You could ask Brompton based on the frame number. You can also get a pretty good idea from the components used.

Many thanks for the question and for watching. It’s not that simple. The M type (or now mid bar) uses a longer stem than the Type did, so it would most likely mean then handle bars would hit the floor and Jen you tried to fold it. Also the cables would be to short.

I tried the bike of a friend with H-type but it still felt like the handlebar is way to far away from by body. Is this common for shorter people? Im about 163cm and it seems like the brompton doesnt fit my body type

Many thanks for the question. I’m 167cm and have no problem, but I am more comfortable on a medium / M type handle bar. You can adjust the handlebars back slightly and the saddle forward a bit, so make it more comfortable!
