I think you’re missing the point that the intention was never to continue with the sound of survival horror… since they’ve started working on it Oli said that this was an album that was going to be a tribute to emo bands from the 2000s, the third chapter an edm album (like music to listen to) and the final chapter a deathcore album (like their early work). That’s the point of the post human series, making each one of them with a different sound. It’s not cause they can’t make more songs like AmEN! In fact I think that would be the easy way to go for them. Instead they’re at a point where they’re just doing whatever they want.

Youtopia, Top 10 statues that cried blood, N/a, Lost, Strangers, to name a few. To me these songs don’t sound dated, they sound fresh with a certain nostalgia of alternative rock/metal/punk of the early 2000s in them. In the end, music is all about enjoyment, and I truly enjoy most of the songs on the record, especially those I named before. People have different tastes, but I still can not see Anthony’s criticism toward this record here valid. Did we listen to the same album? I mean man, what the hell are you talking about? Many of the songs that he chose not to speak about (especially Kool Aid and Bullet) are much harder to frame as “stuck in the past,” hence why he didn’t talk about them. He likely cherry picked the songs that fit his argument the best - it’s a valid rhetorical strategy but doesn’t really make for a great review.
@noname-eu4jx4 ай бұрын
@@davematthews8853 The ''stuck in the past'' argument maybe works if the person who watches the review didn't listen to the album first. @@noname-eu4jx I feel like he does genuinely try to write decent reviews and give each album its due diligence, but sometimes misses the mark entirely, as is the case here. Sometimes I do also get the sneaking suspicion that he exaggerates his feelings for clout; my guess here is that he personally didn’t care for the artistic direction of the album but couldn’t really come up with any logical critiques/arguments against it, so he just kinda reached with his observations to make it sound like a more objective and informed review, as opposed to just saying “it’s not for me” which is probably how he actually felt. It’s not fair to the album imo. Also, in Folding Ideas essay on Doug Walker’s The Wall, he uses the phrase “performative cruelty” to describe Doug’s exaggerated, ill-informed, bad-faith commentary on the music - I do not think Anthony’s review fits any of those descriptors, but I do think it’s within the realm of a disingenuous take. Maybe “performative negativity” is a better descriptor for here. Unrelated, but I think Anthony’s videos would be better if he presented more counter arguments against his takes and then explained them away using evidence he found while listening. It’d make his takes, however hot they are, feel way more legit.

So when FLO sounds like Destiny's Child it's a cool homage and they're the best thing to happen to RnB, but when this band plays into styles from 20 years ago it's cringe? I understand not being able to gel with this album and its aesthetic choices, but the songwriting and performances at their core are solid. Every song is an earworm. I've been missing this sort of catchy, melodic style in mainstream rock. The blend of electronic elements with metalcore was always annoying to me, but with 2024 production and sound design, it honestly isn't sounding bad anymore. This is what Falling in Reverse wished they sounded like.

He's always had this frankly braindead double standard when it comes to most rock and metal and I don't get it. Like a lot of pop and rap he covers isnt doing anything that new but its fun and catchy. And when it does something new it gets recognition. But when linkin park switch sounds album to album its tacky or chasing trends. If deftones doesnt change their sound theyre stuck in the past. If cannibal corpse does the same album 30 years later it gets a pass because ??????? Judging from the review itself im not entirely convinced he actually listened to it beyond that livestream, considering how little he talks about this album and how almost half the review is about ph:sh.

I'm actually surprised not because of the low score itself, but because this album is sort of similar to how Clancy was meant to be an homage and a complementary concept album. It was clear he's not fully deep into the lore, but he gave decent attempts to open up his perspective for Clancy despite not being personally a fan for the sound and direction for a lot of its songs. I honestly think it's a weird case of being nitpicky in the presentation just because it's BMTH. He's also weird sometimes with Everything Everything like this.

The post human series although is meant to be a continuation, the sounds were initially announced to be different. Survival horror was nu-metal and metalcore, this one is emo and pop punk mainly. Disregarding the aspect of the execution as it is subjective, simply complaining that the sound is different from what worked is missing the mark entirely.

There's no way you said the record sounds "old", you have to be kidding, I'm genuinely wondering what you listened to bc yes there's homages, but they're mixed in with elements and influences that you've never quite heard before in rock music like this, the range in this record is massive, and the hyperpop vibes are huge as well, tracks like RIP, 10STCB, Dig It, Kool Aid, AmEn, Die4u, Lost etc are such great examples of boundary pushing. How tf do you listen to these tracks and think they sound old? Dude has lost the plot lol. Didn't even talk about any of the songs.
@questionquestion14 ай бұрын
P.S - Even Limousine, a very blatant Deftones sounding cut like you talked about, still has a lot of newer elements and influences mixed that actually make it sound really fresh and modern, including that sick switch up at the end. Why not try to focus on those things instead of completely writing everything off the minute something doesn't cater to your preconceived expectations? BMTH have always been pretty clear that the post-human series of records are all wildly different from each other.
@rapmetaldemon094 ай бұрын
What we're seeing (in my eyes) is the alt rock from the late 90s and early 00s (i.e. Breaking Benjamin, Nickelback, Three days grace etc.) And the mid to late 00s metalcore sounds have been assimilated into the overall rock zeitgeist and become one. Back then we could have an alt rock song that would incorporate a breakdown-like bridge (think one step closer Linkin Park and Breaking Benjamin's diary of Jane), and on the other side we had metalcore that would sometimes find itself sounding a little closer to those alt rock sounds. At the time I saw it as metalcore bands selling out by trying to play more "octane friendly" radio rock, but now I see that the gaps between the two have been filled in and now it is one encompassing sound that can go one way or the other. These genres also just so happen to really mix well with almost all other relevant genres from rnb, to punk, to electronic, to even hip-hop and country. I think it's the entire reason we even have this current wave of rock and metal bands coming up. They aren't just rehashing old sounds, they are toying with sounds that prior generations might have thought were either played out or never cool to begin with. Stigmas have been broken and I think we're getting alot of interesting stuff because of it

So a few things for this album, it was always supposed to pay homage to the emo music of the 2000s, every album in the post human series is supposed to have a different sound, as well as each one is supposed to have a different theme, the theme of this one is supposed to be healing, the post human project and the whole story will not be completed until the 4th album in the series, the original idea was to make 4 EPs that make up one giant album, obviously plans have changed though, and yes there is an overarching story throughout them all, there is actually a QR code hidden in dig it to an arg, and I know what you might say is why not make the story more obvious, well the answer to that is Oli didn’t want to shove the story down the throat of anyone who just cares about the music, if you read this thank you for taking the time out of your day Mr Fantano, I know you’re the internet’s busiest music nerd

Lol I knew you would despise this record. Especially Limousine, due to your Deftones hatred. And while I agree with some of your points, I just wanna say some things. This album wasn't meant to follow SH's sound as the band stated that all 4 of the PH albums would explore a different sound. SH was pure Linkin Park worship done incredibly well. This album goes for Hyperpop Emo mixed with Alt Metal. So as far as what I was expecting, the band put out the album I thought they would. I agree the self loathing gets a bit much, but eh that's emo for you. I agree the production is a brick wall, which I noticed as soon as Youtopia started. Regardless, I like this sound mashup and the fact that SH had such a throwback sound, it's not surprising that this does too, albeit with more experimentation IMO (once again the Hyperpop elements I found very cool). I love this album, but I know you Melon, so your 3 makes sense. Can't wait until the next album they put out in 4 years.

Most songs are LOADED kinda like how MCR did arrangements, but this really does not sound like anything that could've come out 20 years ago (or even 5-10). Their 00's throwback is both more modern and loyal than anyone else trying it. It feels like how things would sound if that era never dipped in popularity, in a kinda weird and dystopian way (the loudness wars are back). There's some things worth nitpicking but it's sonically elaborate, it's crazy hooky, and it experiments with old ideas but makes them new. It's fair not to like it, but expecting another Survival Horror is a weird take for someone who can give an outline of their discography
