I check the oil every time that I mow because Briggs and Stratton say that air cooled engines consume a bit of oil but I found out that has went from 200 mLs per hour of use down to 150mLs every 10 hours,I change it annually because the oil does trap contaminants which can cause excessive wear & damage to the engine & I don't use it that much in the middle of winter over here in Australia as the grass has gone semi dormant meaning its growth has slowed right down,it would be very different if I lived at Darwin where their climate is tropical. As far as the spark plug testers go when I was doing a small automotive course in conjunction with high school we were shown how to clean & test spark plugs in a vacuum chamber because sometimes they might Fire under no compression but they might not fire properly at least under compression. I had to diagnose that issue with my dads Honda GX35 powered line trimmer,while the spark plug had spark it intermittently fired under compression,that threw me into thinking that it was a carburetor issue but I tested the continuity between the inner & Outer electrode with my multimeter & there was continuity - it was shorted out. It should've had infinity ohms of resistance !

Of course it’s good to check your oil, but I like to know my engine. Know how much it uses oil or doesn’t. Not a real reason to keep checking oil on an engine that doesn’t burn oil right?

I have the same mower and it won’t go into gear... every gear is neutral
@HomeGaragechannel3 жыл бұрын
have you checked to make sure that the belt is not broken or that it's come off one of the pulleys?
@@gerryvandepol7630 have you looked to see how the gears are making contact in the case? I guessing it's stuck in neutral and the gear selector isn't letting it get to the other gears.

This machine was abused a lot from the looks of it. Seeing the damage done to it apparently the owner cared more about the money and not the machine and in the long run he would have to spend some hard earned money on it or get a new one due to neglect.

I think for home use mowers, oil should only need to be topped-off about every 3 years or so, depending on how much lawn you cut and if it looks dirty, has metal silt or filings or smells of gasoline, in which case it should be changed. For a lawn service mower, I believe in religious maintenance, therefore oil should be changed at the end of each season without question, unless it's a Kawasaki engine with an oil filter, in which case it may go two years without a change. I would probably change the oil filter every three years, as a safeguard.
