I love that you talk about how important it is to teach your child how to treat an animal. All too often I see parents expecting the dog to put up with their kid treating them (intentionally, and unintentionally) like crap. And then the parents flip out when the dog has had enough of being ignored after sending warning signals for the longest time.

True every dog attack doesn’t come out of nowhere theres always tons of warning signs like the dog licking its lips or showing its teeth or trying to avoid you or the way its ears move most people just aren’t good with dogs so they don’t know that

@@myfatassdick sometimes they do come out of no where. Sadly sometimes a dog will come down with a problem that can't be seen and they just can't deal with it and basically go into defensive mode basically for everything. But yes the majority of them are preventable attacks for sure.

Just some advice: I strongly recommend saying "crate" instead of "get in there." It's too wordy, and those words are common and easy to water down in daily life. Also, if the word doesn't work the first or second time, immediately switch back to the hand signal and don't use the command until she's getting it right again.
@doctorbone3655

Detroiter Since 1983 I'm a professional dog trainer with decades of experience. Not much to learn about crate training, and just trying to help someone who admits to not being a dog person to begin with. Mink guy is very honest about not being a professional in dogs and has said he wants to learn. Pay attention yourself.
@filthyanimal
@filthyanimal 5 жыл бұрын
I was going to recommend something like this too! Never too late to change the command for the dog. Short commands are best for more dire situations. For instance, the crate is where my dogs sleep when I'm not home, so I say "Go to bed" or just "bed" and they understand. I also have "Leave it" and "Drop it" as interchangeable for when they have something in their mouth they need to drop. This little one looks so eager to learn so I'm sure she'll have no problem with multiple commands, but yeah I recommend short ones because she'll be working in high stress situations where you may not have the time for a full command! Would hate to have one of the mink or herself get hurt! Also Olive is adorable. :D

Lee VanCour I have three german shepherds and all of them understand wordy commands. Go get in there (either in a room or crate), go to bed (specifically their crates), go lay down (literally just lay down somewhere and relax), let's go inside, go eat your food (sometimes they'll want to play when it's time to eat), where's your ball, get down, get up there/go get up there, be still, let me see your teeth, be good girl/boy (be still and let me check you), stay there (don't move). Even less wordy commands can be, get out (leave the room, sometimes they'll just cross the threshold and wait), get in here (come inside or in a particular room), get (leave it alone or get away), hush, etc. They even understand when they can eat. For example, they share a bowl but one of them doesn't care for food so we almost have to force feed him. I usually make him eat first by putting the bowl down and calling his name, the other two know it's not their turn until he leaves the bowl or I call their name. Even when they are in the middle of eating together I can call their name and they know to leave and wait. That's all on top of more common commands like lay down, leave it, sit, stay, bark, shake, spin, out/drop it, and bring it. The basic point is, dogs understand when you're talking to them or someone else. Dogs are perfectly capable of understanding tones and therefore can differentiate commands from normal conversations. The inflictions used when saying these words is also different when speaking to a dog than a human so even if he hummed it the infliction is enough to convey the command. Not only that but it is more natural for humans to talk like this so you don't have to sound like a robot when talking to part of your family. I do agree with the hand signal thing though. Dogs pay a lot of attention to our body language and even our eyes. I combined nearly all my commands with hand gestures that don't seem out of place. Just turning my palm towards the front ever so slightly is enough for them to know to come to me. I think this will be really useful in situations where the dog is far away and yelling may distort the sound of commands.
@furrytrash958

He may possibly advance the command to go into a muskrat / animal hole when she starts hunting, I may totally be wrong though! I would agree with you if it were just crate training!

I remember when I was about three years old we got a rescue dog who had come from an abusive home. The second day we had him I was running around the house while he was sleeping and I decided it would be a good idea to jump right next to him. The moment I landed he lunged around and bit my hand, luckily he didn't draw puncture the skin but the impressions of his teeth lasted a good hour. And that was how I learned that dogs sometimes need their own space, and I always made sure not to intentionally push his buttons after that.

It came from an abusive home, obviously it wasn't trained and was working over instinct because it had been abused. My cats scratch my niece from time to time when she gets too energetic and in their face, it's not their fault, and it's not the owner's either. It was a misunderstanding on more than one end.

You would remember traumatic or painful things from 3 years old too. And something like being 'attacked' by your new puppy (all dogs are puppies to toddlers) would traumatize most little kids, especially if they're not taught how to behave around animals. And I remember stuff from that age that wasn't traumatic at all, even though my dad doesn't, but my mom confirmed those things when I asked her lol

Hello sir. I was raised a deep south out in the woods hunter, and I must say what you do is a tremendous help to the community. You train these naturally aggressive animals to be respectful of each others boundaries while not dulling their natural instincts. You are a prime example of what a hunter should be like. Respectful of the natural ecosystem while also being ingenious with your raising techniques. But, today I saw how well you raise your child. Coming from someone who can't have children but wants to . You are what I want to be as a father. I hope you are well and I look forward to more videos from you.

I'm so glad that you have got her toys to play with and are training her which ones are appropriate to play with, you're crate training and teaching her it's a positive happy place, and also how to behave as an inside dog around the kids, even though she going to be a hunting/working dog. I knew someone who got a puppy for hunting purposes and as soon as they got home they locked it in the crate which was in a dark cold shed, away from the house. They had just picked him up, and this was the first time he had been away from his mother and siblings, as well as the other dogs and lots of people. So he went from having heaps of other beings around him to absolutely no one and nothing. The puppy was understandably distressed and was whining and crying, but these peoples approach was that when he is quite then we can go see him, which often works as a good training method, but in this situation he really needed comfort and reassurance, of which he got neither, and he stayed in that crate for at least the next 24 hours, minus a couple of a few minute long sessions of being cuddled and let to wander round the shed, which were sneaked in by the children. This puppy was also give no toys, not one because, I quote, "he is a working dog, he can't be playing around". He wasn't allowed inside, despite their other dogs being inside, he wasn't allowed to play, with toys, people or other dogs, he was barely allowed any human contact. This was a 7 week old border collie puppy. A few months later and I understand his circumstances have been minorly improved, but the hunting dog training has ceased so he is still getting no attention and very minimal exercise. As I said, I am very happy to know that your adorable puppy is getting everything any puppy needs and more and that she will live a happy life as well as being a "working" dog. 💕💕

"Crate" is the commonly used word to teach dogs to go into the crate. They are a big whiney the first night, but after one week, they will love sleeping their crate. Excellent that you leave the door open during the day as dogs will learn that it's their home. Soon you will find they pup will sleep/nap during the day in the crate with the door open without any intervention by you. Excellent job!

Look up deutan color spectrum to see how dogs see the world. They also have a limit on how far they see. Dog vision is really not that great compared to us. I just adopted a 10 week old, mixed breed puppy. So you're training will help me with my training. Dog has beagle in him so maybe he'll learn some hunting also. My hubby would love that. Right now, he's a momma's boy since I'm home all day to play with him.

You better move the stock saddle that I spied in the background! Those little puppy teeth will destroy that leather, I learned that the hard way once.

Wow! Such intensity & focus in a baby animal. Looks like the ball's in your court Mink Man XD, that dog is ready for whatever challenge you have in store for her. Can't wait to see her journey to becoming the good dog you raise her to be. More dog training! More! More! More!

I have three german shepherds and all of them understand wordy commands. Eventually the dog will be able to read your body language and follow your eyes. It's important that you stay aware of that and even slightly use hand, arm, body gestures to convey commands. One thing that can improve the time it takes to bond and learn is withhold rewards until they make eye contact with you.
