I'm getting my first ever pup around Christmas this year, and am absolutely binging every advice and dog behaviour video I can find. I was actually hoping for a poodle, but a family friend is mating her dachshund next month, and has offered one of her pups instead. I have to admit though, I'm quite apprehensive about a dachshund given the slew of health issues they have. One of the "ground rules" that have been set in the household is that pup isn't allowed on the furniture, so no ramp for us, and hopefully less spinal strain too
@lennysixdachshunds10695 ай бұрын
Unfortunately IVDD is genetic and although you can reduce the risks unfortunately 1 in 4 do still end up with it despite all best efforts. The best bet is to know that at some point between 4-7 years old it’s likely your dog may end up with back issues so have the best insurance cover you can get x
@justaperson46564 ай бұрын
@@lennysixdachshunds1069 of course, and I do very much intend to get my baby insured! My thought process is more along the lines of "if pup is already predisposed, what can I do to extend their time before those issues get worse" so that the little one gets the best quality of life I can provide. To be fair though, I already live on a hill, so pup will be walking up/down at a diagonal anyway

I live in an apartment in Los Angeles. No grass, Piccolina thinks a wee pad is something to drag around and play with. She's had two sets of vaccines. She sleeps with me. The trip home was semi unsuccessful. She pucked 4 times, and would not settle. I finally caved and let her sleep across my lap, not safe but she did settle on the 7 hour drive. Although her food is not the best, lots of words I can't pronounce, I will very very slowly switch. I just watched your crate training video. Will work on that. House breaking, 🤦. Ive been unsuccessfully taking her to grass patches. No results. She wees and poops inside. Im about to watch your housebreaking video.

Hi Lenny, thanks for all the time and energy you’ve put into making these videos - I have watched them religiously and they have been a god send. I am picking my puppy up this weekend but due to Covid, I’ve had to bring him back home to my Mum’s house for two nights and will then head onwards to my own house. I know this isn’t ideal but for various reasons, there’s been no way around it. Do you have any ideas on how I can minimise his stress levels? I’m aware I’ll be disrupting him just as he is settling into another environment
@lennysixdachshunds10694 жыл бұрын
Hey Dean! How exciting for you. As long as pup isn’t left and is allowed to cling to you, you should have much issues :) just make sure plenty of fun games between you two with food and high interest toys. 💜 the bond with you will be more important than the house change. And don’t overwhelm with people so just your mums household and your household for a week to so to let puppy diffuse once you’ve moved on xx

Perfect timing of your video for me. I will be getting a new puppy in a few weeks and will be needing all these new skills for training. I had another dachshund for 13.5 years, who passed away 6 months ago, but I had taken her in when she was almost 2 years old. I had watched your video on training the settle command and was very impressed; which, now that I’m expecting a new arrival, brought me back to your channel and saw this video. I understand about feeding the new puppy what the breeder has been feeding them, but unsure what food to feed them afterwards...there are so many brands and it’s rather overwhelming. Is there one or two that you recommend?
@lennysixdachshunds10694 жыл бұрын
Hi Tracey! It really does depend as each dogs has different tastes :) your best bet I’d to read the ingredients and make sure the first ingredient is at least 50% meat anything else as a first ingredient and that’s no good x if you’re UK based I can recommend Enve Dog Food x

@@lennysixdachshunds1069 Thank you so much!! 😊 Unfortunately, I love on the other side of the pond (US). I checked and Enve doesn’t seem to ship here and not available on Amazon. (And. Sharing amongst dogs? It’s natural for them not to share so 90% of the time you’ll find they don’t want to. I have some dogs that can play together and share snd take things from each other and others that don’t. It’s really just their personalities x

Hi Lenny 😊 First of all thank you so much for your videos! It is rare to find someone with actual advices from personal experience, and that I appreciate a lot. Great work! I’m picking up my mini daxy very soon and it’ll be 10 days after his first vax (6 wks young). My biggest concern is how restricted were you, or should I be when it comes to travelling around with him or going for little walks where it’s quiet- as in a beach where there’re no dogs or barely any human around. Is it also okay if he hangs/plays with another puppy that has just received it’s first shot indoors/outdoors (private backyard) ?

Hi Lefi! 6 weeks old is far too young for a puppy to leave their mum and to have been vaccinated, so I’m hoping I’m misreading your comment 🙈🙈 ❤️❤️

Thank you so much for all the videos you’ve uploaded. I have a 14 week old smooth hair and it’s so nice to have some dachshund specific british content to watch. Can I ask how long you walk Nemo for? I’ve been doing some online reading about how you shouldn’t over exercise puppies and don’t want to give my dog development problems by over walking him. Thought you might have some great advice as a mother of a 3 legged puppy.
@lennysixdachshunds10694 жыл бұрын
Hey!! I stick with all my puppies to 5 minutes per month if life on lead walkies and if it’s off lead on grass then up to 45-60 mins 💜 as off lead on grass they can rest and run more freely. Nemo is slightly more limited because of his hip dysplasia so we have to limit him to about 60 minutes every 2 days x

I currently have a 3-year old LH boy. I am bringing home another LH male puppy in January. My curiosity is, how have your introductions gone and is potty and kennel training easier when having an older trained dog around?
@lennysixdachshunds10694 жыл бұрын
I’ve always found introduction go best when you’re calm and allow the dogs to make their own decisions. Usually best to do in your garden now in your house if possible. And yes I do find house training and crate training easier with multiple dogs however you do still in the initial weeks have to be strict snd stick to routine :)
@FlavourlessLife4 жыл бұрын
Stupidly obvious point, but when you pick them up, make sure the breeder didn’t feed them 10 minutes before you arrived. If they did, their first memory of being in a car will be lots of vomiting... 🤦🏻♂️

Hi Lenny, we already have to Daxie’s. Olivia a dapple that we had from a puppy and Frankie who re homed last year. We are picking up a brand new puppy 2nd Dec so I’d be interested in your advise on this. Frankie had already had 2 litters before we took her so I think she’s going to be quite maternal. However Olivia has never had puppies so I wonder if she might be a bit jealous 🤨

@@lennysixdachshunds1069 another girl ❤️
@lennysixdachshunds10694 жыл бұрын
I think it’ll mostly be a case of letting nature take its course. It can be tough bringing a third girl into a girl duo especially if one is more maternal and one potentially more of a jealous type. Make sure that if either ask for space you provide it. For example if they grumble at the pup. Distract the pup away so they learn you have control of the situation and listen to their needs. Never tell them off for snapping at the pup as it’s totally fair for them to not be happy with them in their space. And then as they all mature they’ll be balanced as you’ll be the leader but in a positive way 💜

I want to get a mini and I have an two year old mix who is a big dog. It would be a great to see what should I do, how to introduce them, where to put dog bed, how to train. Mi dog sleeps in the living room on the sofa but his bed is on the closed terrace, it has a door so it's like a separate room, so do l need to get a crate then? Hi, you said we can't put the puppy on the ground (since they won't be vaccinated) although we are picking up our puppy about 5 hours from our home and we will have to let him out the car to potty, so does that mean we can let him touch the ground, where will he go?
