Im glad i came across this channel, its quite relatable and it helps. I am 100% new to owning a dog full stop. A miniature chocolate / tan smooth haired doxie is what i lusted after and went for. One tip that i can give that has almost fixed every issue that ive ever had with my daschie. And thats establishing myself as alpha in my dogs eyes, this is crucial. I know this now, but i didn't a month ago and i wished i did. He came to us fresh at 12 weeks old. But it nearly came to an end not long ago when he just became too much. oh boy What a problem pup he was. He was so bloody naughty to the point of stupidity. The humping of me, the mrs and her mates was actually quite priceless, but totally not funny in any way 😆 Stealing socks, garments and other things of interest like the keys to a 23 plate electric car. Chewing of windowsills, rugs and remote controls (but due to teething i understand this is involuntary) although he has £50 worth of chew toys scattered around. The constant peeing and pooing inside the house. There was poop Under the bed, poop left behind doors & poop right in the place where you dont look and you end up stepping on leaving you disgusted. Even tho he goes out every 45 mins to 1hr religiously. The rainy Welsh days are a huge factor in his toilet habits too... if its raining outside forgettabout it. The livingroom rug is the only place on my doxies mind. If theres a dog walking by thats bigger than a fiat 500 he will try and start a scrap with it. Seat stealing Food begging when his bowl is untouched. He used to be overpowering and intrusive, he will dart across a room, knocking over candles and ornaments just to get to me... he would even sit on an ashtray if it meant being close to his objeced desire. The only thing that snapped him out of this bad behaviour was establishing myself as alpha and it felt horrible. Positive reinforcement works well like treats etc but its not 100% foolproof. Youve got to loose your absolute rag when hes acting naughty. This is necessary sometimes but always without violence. I read in a puppy training book that the way a pups mum disciplines her pups is to pin them down and snarl at them. I tried this with boris one day after he pooped inside after being outside and it works a treat... i picked him up. Layed him down on his side and held his shoulders down and screamed the absolute place down while pointing at the poo. After 30 secs he got up, shit himself and ran away. 2 more pin downs later and hes now bloody brilliant. Hes obedient. Now goes toilet on command, He now knows that my happy voice means good things and my angry voice means bad things and hes such a happy dog because of the experience... sorry its long reading but hope it helps someone.

This is ABSOLUTELY not the way to work with a dog. Pinning them down ‘the mum does not pin their dogs down’ I’m wondering what book states this. Establishing alpha is EXTREMELY outdated information as dogs work as packs not with a dominant alpha. You will end up with a dog that bites you later in life or even sooner if you do this. Quick fixes are always going to cause long terms issues and I hope you got that from my other videos. Please rethink your methods. Here if you need me

Hi! My puppy is 4 mo old , and he bites a lot! It starts playful, and then he growls and actively barks and tries to bite. It only gets more aggressive when we try pulling our hands back mid bite. Gonna try your suggestions! Thank you!

Things about a female, I have a 4-month-old miniature dachshund, she is all over the place she was until I learned that you have to be careful with them because of their back they say no jumping up and down things like that on the couch on the bed you have to get stairs so I'm in the process of buying stairs for the dog, is there anything else I need to know ❤

Hi Lenny can you tell me how I tell if a dachshund is a long haired or smooth from about 2 weeks of age . Also if one has his tongue out slightly is this a worry ?
@lennysixdachshunds10692 ай бұрын
Hey! Tongue out slightly doesn’t sound not right at 2 weeks and you can tell by brushing your finger against the hair grain. Longs have much longer hair by 2 weeks if you do this. Was this a cross coat breeding? X

My dapple male always humps my younger mixed dachshund. I have a 5 breed male 34%rottweiler/29%dachshund/ 19 % Australian cattle dog/12% retriever/5.7% miniature pincher dachshund. Jax, my pure bred another dapple, always jumps Marty. It doesn’t stop usually. But Marty being the more outgoing one, just takes it 🤣.

Would like to know potty training for dashund in their own room at night . But crate during the day ?
@emilielucie34893 ай бұрын
Why would anyone put their dog in a CAGE, even for the shortest amount of time? 😢 That is terrible! I'm shocked! I really really hope this does not become "trend" here in Germany as well. So far I have never seen anyone do it. But who knows. The poor babies are separated from their mother AND then have to sleep behind bars?
@lennysixdachshunds10693 ай бұрын
For dachshunds who 1 in 4 get IVDD and require strict crate rest getting them used to a crate young as their safe space is VERY important. Otherwise they have the stress of disability alongside being enclosed for the first time and if they aren’t crate rested properly 1in3 will relapse. If you watch my video I do clearly state you leave the door open for a long time before reaching them it’s ok for the door to be closed. Only once they live their space.
@emilielucie34893 ай бұрын
@@lennysixdachshunds1069 Thank you for your reply! While I understand that a crate can be required for this very specific purpose (although I think there are better, more comfortable options like building a enclosed little area in your living space which is at least open at the top and spacious enough to accomodate the dog bed and water bowl without the danger that the bowl gets knocked over), I get the impression that many people use the crate to lock their dogs up during the night (so they cannot follow them to the bedroom?), when they leave the house or when they just want them out of the way. And I think that is terrible. Besides, I would be worried that the dogs might hurt their paws when they accidentally get stuck between the bars. And no one can tell me that dogs feel safe and comfortable in those cages. They might accept it due to their sweet nature, but I'm sure they would prefer other options. They do need a space where they can retreat to, which is sheltered and comfortable, but a crate is not a retreat, let alone sheltered. A dog in a crate is vulnerable as they are trapped AND exposed and that is not a desirable situation for any living creature. There are such amazing dog beds available, like little soft dens or tents etc., which owners can offer to their dogs (and let them decide whether they want use it or not).
@lennysixdachshunds10693 ай бұрын
We will have to agree to disagree :) as I know of thousands of dogs that love their crates and with the right association training never disliked or gave in to liking their crates. I have crates set around my house open to my dogs and they often choose them to go snuggle in. I also have beds called ‘sausage pits’ which are little soft snuggle beds that they can choose and sometimes they choose them too. With crate rest. My dog Eva, who had spinal surgery, actually did not enjoy an open top pen. She would dangerously try and and jump out of it. We did initially set up a pen like a babies playpen for her. Once we switched over to a large crate because jumping up wasn’t an option she rested well and has now recovered. Personally my dogs all sleep in my bed with an option to choose their crates and sometimes they do, sometimes they don’t. So I am not an advocate for locking a dog up all day. But I am also balanced and understand that dogs do enjoy a crate as a safe place / their own little bedroom and the fact the crate has a top compared to a pen (which I still consider a form of crating) is really no different at all. Not everyone however is in a position to have their dog in their bedroom. Maybe they have a mezzanine bedroom, a bedroom too small for a pen, a child that sleeps in their bed, a dog which struggles with their continence. And leaving their dog in another room with open access especially a young dog could result in dangerous eating / chewing by said dog so a crate or pen maybe the safest option for the dog. The world and its options and needs are not black and white and thankfully people watching my videos are almost certainly doing crate training for the right reasons and because they care about their dog so are educating themselves online on their options and the best ways to safely and kindly implement things

That makes a lot of sense. Lana would bark when I left her in the car to post a letter or some other short errand. I began giving her a treat both before and after I returned and now she does not bark when I walk away from the car. She barks one bark when the Amazon Prime truck pulls up.. can I train her to distinguish from FedEx or UPS? LOL

should you ever pick a dachdhund by the scruff of its neck and what are the dangers of doing that?
@lennysixdachshunds10695 ай бұрын
Never pick up any dog by the scruff. Their skin and muscle is not strong enough to hold their body weight past around 4 weeks old.

I love this video. I learnt from experience 8 weeks old is not for me. I am thinking about getting a 4 months old puppy, hopefully it'll already sleep through the night, and because it has spent more time with its adult parents who are potty trained, that it would have learnt some as well. Any tips on bringing home a 16 wks old puppy?

My first dachshund was a bossy little mini-smooth red female. After having her for 5 or so years, I got a mini long-haired female. The older dog was GREAT...almost like a surrogate mother...they bonded quite nicely and the older dog also helped train the younger one. A few years later, I got a mini long-haired male...same thing happened. The older two (girls) bonded with him and they were quite a happy pack of 3. I think it was because of the staggered ages and also the short-haired female had an intuitive "mothering" instinct. She was precious. She would let ANY new puppy curl up with her...and was very loving. I agree with what you said...two puppies at once equals DOUBLE TROUBLE!

So we're dog sitting a friends dachshund for the next two weeks . And because the dogs only familar with one person in the house and is in a completely foreign place to it. it is not settling at all. It barks and whimpers just from people leaving the room it barks and howls continously if two or more people leave the house at a time. Now this morning they left for work at five in the morning and I had to sit with the dog on the floor for about 20 minutes to get it calm enough to stop whimpering and barking. It had actually been doing this for nearly an hour from around 4am but it somehow only woke me up nearly 44 minutes into that hour. Any advice for this kind of scenario? My mother's struggling allot with the dog and I think it's probably picking up on that too.
@lennysixdachshunds10696 ай бұрын
Hey! Unfortunately in this scenario time is usually the only cure. Did they leave anything familiar behind such as their own dog bed, owners clothing?
@animemanXLK6 ай бұрын
@@lennysixdachshunds1069 Just it's blanket and some calming sprays which don't seem to do much. Gave the dog a rubber bone and a stuffingless fox cuddly which seem's to be at least keep him quite for a while. Oh and tons of dog treats and dry mix for it's breakfast and dinner.
