My dad passed yesterday. He was a huge fan of Elvis Costello and Nick Lowe. This was probably his favorite song. I'm gonna put it in his tribute slideshow. It's gonna kill me to hear it at his funeral, but them's the breaks I guess.

So glad I got to see Nick play this one at 1990's Bumbershoot Arts Festival in Seattle Center Arena. He was followed onstage by Ry Cooder, David Lindley and Flaco Jimenez. Some of the best live roots music I've ever heard.

Reminds me strongly of Radio Caroline (offshore ship based pirate radio station to UK & Europe) who played this loads and mashed it up to make Peace & Love promos in place of adverts. About the only place we could hear it. RIP Ronan O’Rahilly, who created that station and kept it going back then. Still going now, (under Peter Moore).

I actually heard this version for the first time on an internet radio station (Oldies Paradise, pretty generic-sounding name) They make regular shout-outs to radio Caroline.

I love this version and Nick Lowe is like King Midas to me, but honestly I love Bruce Thomas’ bass on the Costello version more than anything. Bruce Thomas’ bass lines were really the heart of Costello’s early recordings.

"This version" is the original.
@lqr824 Жыл бұрын
@@Sundae_Times original's not always best. I love this version but the "yeah yeah" and the voice-overs at 2:20 make it sound cynical to me. It's one of my top five favorite pop songs, much to Lowe's credit, and he produced the Costello cover so gets credit for that as well.
@lqr824 Жыл бұрын
The Thomas version seems nearly note-for-note identical. I think it just has a bit brighter EQ and is a bit more forward in the mix. As such, you can't call this a Thomas bass line. It's a Lowe bass line, and in fact, Elvis's version was produced by Lowe as well so to the extent the mix is better Lowe should get some credit for that as well.

I love this song from my youth. Not a fan of the Elvis C. version and don't understand all the critical hype about it. The Brinsley versions suffer from lack of technology, which brings (imho) a lot of unfair criticism. In the end though, my fav version is Springsteen (even though I'm not his biggest fan). I plan on listening to other versions mentioned in the comments, so I may end up eating these words! LOL...
@lqr824 Жыл бұрын
The Brinsley version is superior to Elvis's in one inarguable respect: the vocal harmonies on the original are regrettably lacking. I also found the toms on the Elvis cut to be way too forward in the mix.

Nick's vocals are really great on this, that's for sure. As a huge Costello fan, strangely I always felt this song was the weakest on Armed Forces, while everyone else disagreed. Now I hear the Brinsleys doing it, I have to agree, this is a better version, arguably- but. yeah, Pete's drumming does kick ass on Costello's cover! The Attractions all kicked so much ass.

Let's say it's so. Elvis was still standing on the shoulders of giants here, copying the drums, bass, guitar, everything almost to the note. And Elvis is such a vocal talent one can hardly feel slighted for being second-best to him. See Elvis sing Penny Lane for the Obamas with Sir Paul at Barak's side, and it might be better than the Beetles' version...
