How to knit one-color brioche, flat.
Knit Along
Here's the written version of what I'm speaking about - I'm a bit wordy in the video (an embarrassingly at the halfway point of the video I say "slip knitwise... I totally mean purlwise) but I think it's fairly easy to follow. I recommend watching it through once so you can see what's to come and then pause and follow along the second time through.
Cast on 20 sts.
Row 1: K1, *k1, sl1yo; rep from * to last st, k1.
Row 2 (WS): K1, *brk, sl1yo; rep from * to last st, k1.
Rep Row 2.

I agree. I've been so frustrated, watching countless videos on how to brioche, and they all get lost in pointless detail. And it's confusing and discouraging. The flat one-color brioche at its essence is so simple: just brk, yarn front, sl1, repeat. I don't why people have to complicate it. yeah, there's more you can do with it, like selvages and whatnot. But really it's just brk, yf, sl1. Boom. That's it. Thanks a lot.

i have watched how to correct a slipped stitch, but can you tear out a row of brioche? I see if you cast on a even number of stitches you work sides in the same way, but an odd number of stitches you have to work the WS a bit differently. Great video.

Does it take a whole lot more time for the work to come up, and does it use more yarn?
@TheUnapologeticKnitter
@TheUnapologeticKnitter 2 жыл бұрын
Yes and yes! Brioche is worked in multiples of 2 rows so it takes two rows to make 1. Since every other stitch is a slipped stitch (the sl1yo) we only work half the stitches on each pass which means that each 'pass' is only really half a row. We need the second 'pass' to complete a full row (I hope that makes sense). And yes, brioche is a yarn hog and uses more yarn. I'm not sure if it's double (say, for a hat) but it would definitely be at least a third more.

@@TheUnapologeticKnitter Then I think knitting a pullover in that stitch would take a terrible lot of time.

Only one caveat when you are "knitting", the yarn is actually in front which to a fast knitter is a little counterintuitive because that means you're in position to purl. Just takes a little re-education of your hands.

So then does this mean that you do not throw the yarn to the back before knitting the next 2 stitches together? Thank you.

I see what you're doing (good job, thank you!) but am confused by terminology. Is the definition of "slip one stitch and yarnover" actually the process to "bring the yarn forward and slip one purlwise?" If so, the name and the process seem opposite to me.
@TheUnapologeticKnitter
@TheUnapologeticKnitter 6 жыл бұрын
Paula Aschim Well - sort of. The action is largely “slip the next Stitch purlwise with yarn in front and move the working yarn back into position to knit or Purl the next st thereby creating a yarnover”. That’s the long version of it. ;) You don’t, in fact, create a yarnover before you slip the stitch- the yarn over is created by knitting or purling the next st because when we move the working yarn to the front to slip the next st (when you’re on a knit row) we do so by moving the yarn between the needles rather than over. The yo is created when we knit the next st and the working yarn wraps over the LH needle. Does that help clarify?

I believe this is a US 5 needle and sport weight yarn. Alternatively you could do the same with a US 8 needle and a worsted weight yarn.
