Knit Along
Here's the written version of what I'm speaking about. Sorry about all the pop-ups. I have no script so I get a bit kerfuffled sometimes.
The written instructions below should clear that up.
Cast on 20 sts.
Row 1 (RS; setup row a, using Color 1): K1, *k1, sl1yo; rep from * to last st, k1.
Row 2 (RS; setup row b, using Color 2): K1, *sl1yo, brp; rep from * to last st, k1.
Row 3 (WS, using Color 1): K1, *sl1yo, brp; rep from * to last st, k1.
Row 4 (WS, using Color 2): K1, *brk, sl1yo; rep from * to last st, k1.
*** The video ends here - the remaining 4 rows I work off camera are worked thus:
Row 5 (RS, using Color 1): K1, *brk, sl1yo; rep from * to last st, k1.
Row 6 (RS, using Color 2): K1, *sl1yo, brp; rep from * to lsat st, k1.
Row 7 (WS, using Color 1): K1, *sl1yo, brp; rep from * to last st, k1.
Row 8 (WS, using Color 2): K1, *brk, sl1yo; rep from * to last st, k1.

Thank you, thank you, thank you!!! I am so glad I found this video you explained this stitch without confusion. The others I watch explained the technique with unnecessary steps which had me totally lost. This technique has intimidated me for several years because I could never understand correctly and always had to frog by the time I knit a few rows. Once I watched your video (3x) I was able to knit samples without errors. I knit scarf without mistakes. 😄

To make the edges even it would be better to slip the first/last stitch, then knit/purl with following stitch-respective working rows. That way you get a clean edge.

Thanks for the tutorial. Something's throwing me off though. In the video, it looks like you actually yarn over first, then slip1, but the instructions say slip1, then yarn over. Is it actually yarn over, then slip1?
@TheUnapologeticKnitter
@TheUnapologeticKnitter 5 жыл бұрын
This trips up a lot of people. I can't take any credit for coming up the term "sl1yo"; I'm simply using the terminology provided by the industry. However! To work a sl1yo - the first step is to bring the working yarn to the front between the needles (or leave it in the front if you're working a purl row), then slip the next stitch, then bring the working yarn to the back (or all the way round to the front again if you are purling) creating the yarn over. So TECHNICALLY the slipped stitch happens first but depending on how quickly you work the combination of movements I can see how it appears that the YO is worked first. Happy brioche-ing!

I have tried to follow many other instructions and this seems to be the clearest I have come across so far. I actually got several rows knit , and knit correctly. The two color cable cast-on is an even number of sts as is the above. So you won't have to change anything! Brioche on!!!

I'm new to brioche, but I think you turn the work. After the fourth row, both color working yarns are on the same end, so you'll want to pick up your first color again and work from there.

Hiya! Could you please explain how you would do this using circular needles?
@TheUnapologeticKnitter
@TheUnapologeticKnitter 8 жыл бұрын
Do you mean flat using a circular needle? It's exactly the same. As long as the needle has two points it won't be any different. If you mean in the round, as if to make a hat, I have a separate video for that in my video feed - 2 Color Brioche in the round. Hope this helps!

I should clarify - it's exactly the same with the exception that you would be using the other end of the same needle, rather than a second circular needle. For knitting brioche flat, using a circular needle, I like to use a 24" if it's available. A 16" works fine but you may find if a bit short depending how wide your project is.

@TheUnapologeticKnitter
@TheUnapologeticKnitter 7 жыл бұрын
Hi Fra! Your english is great! And the answer is yes... kind of! I typically recommend converting brioche to standard knitting (here's a link to my video on how to do this: kzbin.info/www/bejne/pmq4fHRumZp0l5o) and then work a stretchy bind off. My preferred stretchy bind off is as follows: K1, *k1, sl 2 sts purlwise to LH needle, k2tog tbl; rep from * to end. I hope this helps!

I'm having a lot of trouble getting the tension right. Can you give me any advice?
@TheUnapologeticKnitter
@TheUnapologeticKnitter 7 жыл бұрын
Hi Rachael - so brioche is a much looser fabric than we are used to. Because every stitch is slipped and therefore much taller than a normal stockinette or ribbed fabric, everything is loosey goosey. Add in all those sl1yo and it gets WAY loose. As an example, if you typically knit 18 sts / 4" in stockinette using worsted on a US 8 (5mm) needle, you'd likely need to go to a US 5 or 6 to obtain 18 sts /4" in brioche. I recommend going down a needle size or two from your standard and see if that helps. And just a heads up - if you block brioche, it grows substantially! So be sure you block your swatch before you start any projects so you know what it's going to do before you knit the whole thing *getting off my soap box now* ;) If this doesn't help, let me know and we'll see if we can diagnose your problem further.

@TheUnapologeticKnitter

No - sadly it's not. You need to be able to slide the work from one end of the needle to the other to work the second color. You could feasibly work 1-color brioche, flat, but that's it. I'm so sorry! That's a bummer.

The Unapologetic Knitter well, I had ended up frogging my latest attempt in frustration. So when I got home, I was set to try again so you could show me what was wrong... only this time I peeked in on the written instructions... and found out my mistake. Forgive my clumsy explanation - I'm really new to knitting - but I thought the pattern was bark, burp, burp, bark, burp burp. But it's really bark, burp, burp, bark, bark, burp, burp, etc. 2 rows of each instead of 1, 2, 1. So I tried it that way, and it actually turned how how it was supposed to... that, and I was getting confused on what to do with the first few stitches at the beginning and end, but I just needed to listen better. Now that I slowed down and paid extra attention, I got it to work. I guess my subconscious just wanted me to plead for help first. Anyways, sorry for the novel, I'm just extremely excited. And thank you for the amazing tutorial - never on my life would I thought I'd be able to knit, let alone BRIOCHE KNIT!! Wouldn't have been able to do it without you! :D
