Welcome! This little video demonstrates who to work two color brioche flat for English style knitters (aka Throwers) who hold their working yarn in their right hand. If you are a Continental Style knitter you can head here: • Two-Color Brioche Work...
Abbreviations:
MC - Main color
CC - Contrast color
K - Knit
P - Purl
STS - Stitches
BRK - Brioche knit; knit the slipped stitch and it’s “yarnover shawl” together as one stitch.
BRP - Brioche purl; purl the slipped stitch and it’s “yarnover shawl” together as one stitch.
(YF-)SL1YO - Bring yarn to front of work (if it is not already there), sl st purlwise, wrap a yarnover around the slipped st. (YF is only included on "brk" rows, since the yarn already hangs to the front on "brp" rows.
RS - Right side
WS - Wrong Side
Swatch Instructions:
Cast on an odd number of stitches with your MC yarn. (I am using DK weight yarn on a size US 6 circular needle.) I just to cast on 15 stitches.
Setup Row 1A (RS): K1, *yf-sl1yo, k1; repeat from * to the end of the row. Drop your MC yarn and slide your stitches back to the beginning of the row on this side. DO NOT TURN.
Setup Row 1B (RS): Slip 1 stitch, join your CC yarn, *brp1, sl1yo; repeat from * to the last 2 sts, brp1, drop CC so it falls towards you on this RS of the work, slip the last stitch and turn so the WS is facing you.
Pattern Repeat
Row 1A (WS): Using MC, p1, *sl1yo, brp1; rep from * to the last 2 sts, sl1yo, p1. Drop your MC yarn and slide your stitches back to the beginning of the row on this side. DO NOT TURN.
Row 1B (WS): Using CC, slip 1 stitch, *brk1, yf-sl1yo; repeat from * to the last 2 sts, brk1, drop CC so it falls to the back, slip the last stitch and turn so the RS is facing you.
Row 2A (RS): Using MC, k1, *yf-sl1yo, brk1; repeat from * to the end of the row. Drop your MC yarn and slide your stitches back to the beginning of the row on this side. DO NOT TURN.
Row 2B (RS): Using CC, slip 1 stitch, *brp1, sl1yo; repeat from * to the last 2 sts, brp1, drop CC so it falls towards you on this RS of the work, slip the last stitch and turn so the WS is facing you.
Repeat Rows 1A/B & 2A/B until you feel darn good about brioche!

After watching and reading many various tutorials, I FINALLY understand the "yarn over" part (this is why I have to keep undoing and redoing because It doesn't look right). THANK YOU.

I watched several other videos by other well known fiber designers. Read blogs. Tried to work off the written instructions. This is the video that pulled it all together and finally made it "click"! Thank you so much!

Thank you for the great tutorial! I do have 2 questions.....I really should put them in your weekly podcast.......1. Is 2 color brioche easier or more learner friendly that 1 color? 2. How do you know when to purl? Is each row a knit then purl or since its knitted twice is it knit/knit color 2 then purl color 1/purl color2? Does that make sense? My goal this year is to try Brioche but need to figure out to either start with the Boho Blush or Biochealisious shawl. LOVE your work! HELP ;)

Hello Tracy! I recommend starting with 2 color brioche as it is easier to see what is going on with the stitches using contrasting colors! On the RS of your work you will knit (brk) with the main color and then do a 2nd pass purling (brp) with the contrast color. The WS is the opposite of that - purl (brp) with the main color and knit (brk) with the contrast color.

I’m excited, knitting brioche is finally sinking in! I’d been knitting what I think is the fisherman’s knit stitch which gives a very similar effects, but was/am determined to learn brioche. I got confused when in some rows, you slipped the first stitch and in others, you knit or purled them. Can you explain why? Is it because the next stitch would be a brioche knit or purl?

I have a question about the order, what's the easiest way to remember if I'm meant to be knitting or purling? You seem to be switching between each half row so I'm a little bit confused and I don't want to mess up by doing the wrong way

Hi, thanks for the tutorial! I want to make your nascha poncho, is this a useful tutorial to get the hang of brioche in order to make that? I'm getting confused as some tutorials say cast on an odd no. then some say a multiple of 4...
@dreareneeknits

Hi Kit! Nascha is worked flat, so this would be a great tutorial to practice with. You want an odd number of sts when working brioche flat and an even number of sts when working brioche in the rnd :)
