Nah. Brisbane is the name given to the city by the people who founded and built it. Meanjin is just a small part, the name of a geographical feature, I think where QUT and the City botanical gardens are. If the Turrbal/Jagera had founded the city, I would happily call it Meanjin. However they never built a settlement there.

As a Brisbanite I can confirm, Meanjin is not a thing. Quite a few Councils and Government departments acknowledge the land and the people on it, without any intention of changing the name. Also, it is a reach to include the unsubstantiated claim that more people are using it in social media posts. Thus, to argue that the name is more widely used is (with respect) rather disingenuous.

It's a respect thing. The info is there now, and if people choose to show respect to our First Mobs, then they can. Matt is right, Meeanjin means spear shaped or pointed (in my understanding) and refers to the point of land at the base of Brissy where the gardens are. Kurilpa is another name being used more by some - a name for the flood prone area of South Brisbane/West End named after the Kurilpa/water rat (which isn't a rat). Brisbane as a modern city covers a much larger area.

The Cross River Rail will help to ease the problems with Brisbane’s train woes, but the Meanjin line (Brisbane Subway) from Toowong to Hamilton via West End, Albert Street & Kangaroo Point is desperately needed to address this. A fast/high speed rail between Brisbane and Gold Coast, Sunshine Coast and Toowoomba/Ipswich will truly evolve the city and the surrounding regions into a true megalopolis

As someone born and raised in Brisbane. The main reason for not taking public transport is a number of factor (A) our public transport network is incredibly segmented, to get to anywhere that is not metro, the amount of transfers I need to make is ridiculous. (B) as the video stated, low frequency and inconsistent public transport schedules. I can't count the amount of times a bus was late by 15+ minutes, and when it finally shows up, it's so full they won't even stop at the station and I need to wait for the next late bus. (C) Public transport is becoming incredibly cost ineffective. At an average of $4.5 per trip and having to make two trips or more a day, you're spending an approx $45 dollars for just the work week alone. When compared to the trade-off of private car travel, while it may cost a bit more, you are saving much more time (in most cases, saving half the time or more in travel). I can't say what the answer is definitively. But fare cost and time are the biggest factors in my experience why I won't take it. If it was significantly cheaper to outweigh the compromises of public transport I would take it more often (plus would also reduce fare evasion by a whole heap)

The fares are a real thing. Apparently the council subsidises something close to 80% fares. The Greens are pushing (federally) for a nation-wide 12mo free public transport trial; I'd love to see that personally.

I recently moved from Melbourne to Brisbane, but one thing that I love about here is that public transport is far more accessible than it is in Victoria. I use a motorised scooter whenever I go out and getting it on trams is basically impossible for me to do on my own. Brisbane bus drivers are so much more willing to help, and the whole ramp system on trains is far superior than in Victoria. I really hope this continues as Brisbane expands its public transport network

melbourne is in that goofy state where it is trying to appear advanced but is clearly lacking in a lot of ways, whereas brisbane and sydney (at least according to what i've seen) is always improving regardless of their status it's kind of disappointing as a melburnian that although we don't have the olympics like brisbane, we still are hosting the commonwealth games in 2026 and even so there should still be more investment in developing the public transport especially as we are going to be the number one city in australia in size

I am Brisbane born and bred. While our public transport systems are rather clean and tidy, more would regarly use public transport if it was not so expensive - compared to driving your car. Also, the outer suburbs are not connected enough. Using public transport would take me over an hour to get to my sisters place across the river because the bus goes into the city then out again crossing 4 zones! By car it's 20 minutes.

Public transport in brisbane is super cheap compared to most countries in Europe that I've been to, and even in Amsterdam it's faster to drive than catch a train. I think we should add a ring line around the suburbs to make it easier to travel between the suburbs though, I think it's quite annoying to have to go into the city and back up.

What Brisbane truly needs is a couple of semicircular ring lines connecting each of the different rail branches. Firstly an inner ring that links the Cleveland, Logan, Ipswich Ferny hills and Caboolture lines without need to go into the city centre. Then secondly, a line that links the Gold Coast with Beaudesert, Springfield and then finally on to rosewood station. Oh reinstating the old Beaudesert branch would be great too. The rail corridor is still there.

@lwf51 Brisbane does have an inner circle bus line, imaginatively called the Circle Line. 😂 Hiwever it is more of an inner circle. Really only services areas with about 10-15km of the cbd. It’s every half hour (or at least was back in my bus catching days) and from memory is the 598 and 599. If it were replicated a bit further out it’d be a great boon to residents further from the cbd.

@@rmar127 it’d be fantastic if it were replicated with more reliable service too - maybe it’s because it’s such a long route and the delays add up for stops towards the end, but I’ve always found these routes particularly unreliable. I once waited an hour and a half for the 598 before giving up!

Brisbane already has half a CBD rail loop complete - South Bank, South Brisbane, Roma Street, central and Fortitude Valley stations form a semi-circle around the CBD. They could complete the circle by building a tunnel from Fortitude Valley under the river to Kangaroo point, Woolloogabba and then back around to South Bank Station. This would create an inner city loop, and all train lines would go around the loop clockwise, and anticlockwise before heading back out the way they came.

Something that I have appreciated moving from Brisbane to Melbourne last year was the substantially better thought out and connected public transport down here. Trams and trains go almost everywhere, it's fantastic. Tram in the inner CBD is also FREE! Crazy

When I visit Shenzhen I love the fact that a subway station never seems more than a couple of hundred meters away, if not just around the corner. Fast, clean, cheap and frequent. Much easier than having a car which is slower and then you have to park it somewhere!

As a Brisbane resident I think you’ve articulated our public transport problems really well. Brisbane’s growth has not been managed well at times. Our oldest suburbs have trains, but the next big wave of growth included the tram network to about ten km from the city. When this was removed in the late 1960’s the bus net work which replaced it was not fit for the growth to follow. Without massive resumptions of land and displacement of people train lines couldn’t be added. This means there is a huge gap in train lines around the southern suburbs of Brisbane. So all transport is carried by road. Our local and state governments try to encourage the use of bicycles, but for most people this isn’t realistic. Brisbane is a hilly city- especially the inner city- so the level of fitness required is more than most people can manage. Additionally there are limits on taking bicycles on public transport which don’t help.

"Our local and state governments try to encourage the use of bicycles" -- yeah by mandating cycling helmets/hats, which were abandoned by Mexico, Boznia-Herzegovena and Israel, when they realised that most people who would hire bicycles don't carry hats around with them just in case. Australia is a hold-out in the failed mandatory helmets experiment, and only self-importance keeps it holding on to that absurd and counter-productive requirement. Give it up, Australia!

@@DWREV Hilly and sprawling Brisbane has a hot, sunny and humid summer, and glary sun right through winter. You could get very sweaty and sunburnt cycling every day. There's also a missing link in the main northern bikeway - around Eagle Junction and Clayfield, and the City Council last year axed plans to complete it, mainly because a NIMBY group with connections to a local real estate agency kicked up a huge fuss.

Brisbane had a railway bridge at Indooipilly from the 1890's and another one designed for electric from the 1950's. Encyclopedia Brittanica 1968 " Brisbane has one of the most efficent Tram systems in the world ". Also, the trams involved in the depot fire were mostly over 40 years old, it's illegal to use a bus over 20 years old.

There are three river rail bridges in Brisbane. There is the Merivale Bridge in the city which was the one you showed in the video, there is also the Albert Bridge(named after the previous bridge which was named after Prince Albert son of Queen Victoria and later King of England) and the Indooroopilly Rail Bridge(previously known on Wikipedia as the Nameless bridge because it really doesn't have a proper name like every other river bridge in the city and is still kind of conspicuous in this sense) both at Indooroopilly. They head south-west towards Ipswich, they do mostly carry cargo to be fair but they connect the entire west of the state to Brisbane.

The gridlock of traffic and lack of public transport can be blamed on the originator of Brisbane's traffic disaster, going back to 1971, Lord Mayor alderman Clem Jones, who took pride when he abolished the Brisbane trams system under heavy protests from the Brisbane public. This was the start of all Brisbane's traffic problems. In 1971 the trams never ran again in Brisbane. They should never have been abolished and Brisbane is paying for it now. But that's the left for you and it all happened way back then with the congestion and public transport problems never being fixed; just getting worse over the past 50+ years.

I lived in Brisbane in 1984-2000 when the train network was so minimal it was almost useless. Back then everyone was talking about circle/ring services to go from one suburb to another without having to go into the city centre. Can't believe that still hasn't been sorted out - the train network looks the same as back then! Now I am considering moving back to Brisbane but not sure I can live there without a car.

Brisbane has got a whole lot of other things to sort out if it's going to be on a par with Sydney and Melbourne. Try getting something to eat or a coffee after 2pm. It's like ok lunch is over, everyone can wait till dinner now !! Meanwhile people all over the place looking to get something while they're out shopping or doing business. Same after 8pm, Ghost town !! I moved from here to Melbourne 17 years ago and came back a little over a year ago. Culture shock. It was like going back in time 10 years. Don't even get me started on how many train stations are an accessibility nightmare for anyone in a wheelchair. In 2023 this is unacceptable.

I live in Brisbane and have for decades been primarily a bicycle commuter. The one thing not mentioned is the ever expanding system of bicycle paths. 40 years ago there were none, now there are several alongside the creeks, freeway and train lines. Again like the public transport lines they don't well serve the fringes but it is possible to hop between them using the road network. Many more cycle paths are needed along with a true underground but Brisbane's population has now just reached the density to demand it. Time to get to it. -I'll stay on my bike tho-

The cost of a one way fare to the airport in Brisbane is about 15 USD for a 17 km journey, which takes 40 minutes and had a headway of 30 minutes! The cost of a 28 km journey from Auckland airport to downtown is less than 3 USD. Headways are about 10 minutes. Brisbane policies want push people to drive. Drop the fare to 10 AUS, drop the time to half and people might use it more.

Yeah I remember wanting to get from the CBD to the airport many years ago by train. It was about 5.30 pm. The sun was still up. The staff at the station said I had already missed the last train. I couldn't believe it. What's the point of a train to the airport if it doesn't serve EVERY flight? Hopefully it's better now.

I liked the public transport in Brisbane, it really depends where you live I think. I found it easier to go to shops and libraries etc. in Brisbane than in London, where I live now. I think what brisbane needs is better connections to more rural areas and better connections between suburbs.

Brisbane's problem is its so hilly.. Rail is the future.. Need more Subway's and maybe Rail will become popular again.. Brisbane has a very disjointed Public transport system.. People get sick of the lack of connection's and so they just drive cars instead..

And worst case every hours till aprox midnight every day ! This have been the same story living 5km up to 15km from the city !!! I’m not going to say don’t upgrade brining it on but I think this give the service a rap it does not deserve !

Indeed as someone who lives about 5km to the South of the CBD Public Transit is something I have never really had a problem with, and Its only going to get a whole lot better when these projects are completed for those of us who live in that area. During peak hour I currently have 25 buses servicing 5 different inbound routes between 7 and 8 am, which all stop within a 3 minute walk of my house. Its almost too many really. The problem as I see it is all 25 of those buses go through the city, about 15 of them terminate in the city with the other 10 terminating in the valley after going through the city. While no expert I think it would be better if they alll terminated at Branda or the Gabba, then went back in the other direction, making the inbound commuters change to the new Metro/Underground rail stations. I don't think it would not add very much if any time to the city bound journeys, if we had to do that.

Hoping this will be implemented in the Philippines much more aggressively. Unlike Jakarta or Bangkok, Manila is too car centric esp most of our politicians and civil engineers studied in the US. Cars itself is not bad, but its unfair that they are always the priority 😡😡. For me the solution should be 1. Increase road tax 2. Improve public transport 3. Allow rowhouses / mixed density neighborhoods with business centers within 1km radius. Ban low density US housing.

You cannot build high density townhouses in hot countries as heat builds up between dwellings and limits airflow. Building high and low rises, and even double storey houses in hot countries is also not recommended as hot air rises, as well as the dwellings being above the tree line without natural shade. Air-conditioners will be a must. Hot countries need to build spaced out neighborhoods for air to flow through. Limit the amount of fencing where hot air can get trapped, and cool air blocked. The house should preferably be single set, brick with tile floors. The front and back door aligned with a wide unobstructed hallway connecting the two for greater pos-neg air flow. Undercover outdoor seating areas on both the morning and afternoon side of the dwelling. The house to be surrounded by shady trees. Try a swimming pool before turning on the AC.

i do agree that the "brisbane metro" is a temporary and honestly more in place just to have some form of system in time for the olympics considering rail infrastructure suffers delays (mainly in english speaking countries since they decide to do things the hard way unlike france or spain which sure they still have issues with construction developments but they dont get those huge 100 billion pound inflated budgets like the uk/usa does and australia suffers this often as well although not as bad)

also the fact that getting a train from the cbd to gold coast last time i checked takes 90 minutes when a car takes 60 is crazy, this has nothing to do with the train having to stop frequently as even the uk has shown a train route with many stops will still be faster then cars, but more so the quality of the rail system itself as i've seen from a satellite map the rail ways seem to have a lot more sharp turns then what you see in other systems, im sure there's other contributing factors as well but really i would want to see a project where getting from the sunshine coast to the gold coast is brought down to 90 minutes by train which is very possible and doesnt require state of the art high speed rail considering the close distance between all three cities, consider it a mini-version of the dream melbourne - canberra - sydney hsr connection

@@newbris Yeah, I moved to London from Australia and it's much more expensive. You could be paying 15-20AUD just to get to work, and no continuations between bus and train, so if you have to swap you'll be paying even more. You should also consider the cost of the car and the registration when calculating the costs. Even in London it's cheaper to use public transport than own a car. Worst case scenario, you can catch an uber if you need to go somewhere with less access, and it still ends up cheaper.

I live in outer Brisbane in Logan and i use cars outside of the city. But for getting into the city and around the city i always prefer public transport. Cars are great when there isn't any public transport, but if there is it's cheaper and easier to just use a bus most of the time.

The smart thing to do is take 1 lane away from the existing motorway and toll road system and repurpose it as a light rail corridor. The infrastructure is already in place, bridges tunnels etc. The existing motorway users would soon get the message as they sit in bumper to bumper gridlock as these light rail vehicles go wizzing past at 2~3 minute intervals doing 120+ km/hr. Rail is king when it comes to public transport and buses should only be necessary for final approach. Also they are very mean here with discounts for regular users. There would be more incentive to use if they gave generous monthly pass discounts.

@lwf51 The tram lines were not all ripped up. Every now and then when road works are done the old lines are exposed briefly before being covered by new seal. Recent road work on Gympie Road in Kedron (where they are putting in Bus Transit lanes) briefly exposed the tram lines in the road centre, which had been buried underneath about 200mm of road sealings.

Brisbane has a radial rail network which enables journey to the CBD and not cross-circumferential travel. More cross-regional, cross-suburban rail lines should be built to enable travel from one suburb to another suburb without going through or to CBD. A rapid regional rail connecting Toowoomba, Sunshine Coast and Gold Coast with Brisbane CBD and the Airport should be built on the similar line of Paris RER, the German s-bahn or Delhi RRTS. Parking spaces should be reduced at train stations and train stations should serve as bus depots to high frequency bus networks that dive deep into the suburbs to address last-mile connectivity.

what if we build a new underground line branching off from cross river rail at Woolloongabba through to Carindale, then elevated through Capalaba to Victoria Point. Then we should also build a rail line branching off from cross river rail north of Roma street, running underground to Alderly and then at grade and elevated to Albany creek/Eatons Hills and then to Warner. We also need to build a new line to Browns plains via Acacia Ridge, a new line to the Sunshine Coast, which is already planned, but i would extend it to Noosa via Coolum and Sunshine coast airport. Extend the Gold Coast Rail line down to Tweed Heads and the Light Rail to Coolangatta Airport and build a new rail link to the proposed Caboolture West Development and fast rail to Toowoomba.

I think the Cleveland line should be extended to Raby Bay, Victoria Point and then hook around to Capalaba. The Eastern Busway needs to be extended to Capalaba too. I agree with an underground extension to Carindale and Garden City. The Sunshine Coast is planning a light rail to connect Noosa, the airport, Caloundra and Nambour to the new Maroochydore CBD, where the new Sunshine Coast line will terminate.

Honestly Melbourne has the best public transit in Australia. They got rid of cars in half of the streets in the city by making the trams free to ride. Outside of the city, the train network is so extensive to most of the suburbs with buses connecting to the final miles.

It does sound pretty overhyped. Perth will be spending about $9 billion ($3 billion planned) on its metronet and instead of getting 60 new busses, Perth will get 41 trains that can move at 130kmph and carry 1200 passengers, 23 train stations, 72km of train tracks plus a few other upgrades to things like train crossings and bridges. My view on the whole thing is that there is no point spending money on a public transport system if it isn't faster than driving, It might as well be flushing money down the drain if you can't get from home to work 20km away in 15 minutes.

I think you might find its actually worse than that unfortunately. The train lines that urgently need more capacity are Gold Coast/Beenleigh, Redcliffe and North Coast. But the way they have built Cross River Rail; the lines that will actually be getting a capacity boost are Cleveland, Ferny Grove and Shorncliffe. The Western lines to Ipswich and Springfield are the best in Bris but are stuck in a bottleneck just to the West of the city because they have to merge until the Gov build a short tunnel to Roma Street.

This biggest single cost of the Brisbane Metro is actually another underground tunnel in the Brisbane CBD designed to pull most of the buses off the streets above.

I live in Brisbane and use public transit or walk 100% of the time. If someone offered me a free car, I would reject it. Why unnecessarily deal with parking, petrol, insurance, etc.? The public transit here is excellent, and I have lived all over the world. People shouldnt move to a distant suburb and then complain about public transport. Live in or near the city and you can get everywhere you need to be very easily. Kudos to Brisbane City Council! Now, if they can only get rid of all the homeless people then this place would be super great! 🙏

One issue not identified with fhe Brisbane bus services is that the speed of fhe buses is too slow, even though they have a dedicated busway. Journeys take fsr too long from dormitory suburbs to the CBD, so everyone wants to work from home rather than be jammed into overcrowded, slow moving buses for hours every day

The problem is the narrow minded Brisbane centric thinking of QLD Labor Qld has at least 3 other cities which could take up the demand of growth in the state, yet they rather keep building up a single city and letting it sprawl over the South East, compounding the limitations of Brisbane. Ipswich was once supposed to be the state capital, yet has the slowest development growth in the South East. The sustainable future is decentralising development in Qld and spreading it across the other cities. Especially ones that aren't covered in hills and mountains that are expensive to develope around.

Define “ small capacity “? The 50cc scooters one can use on a car licence are an outright danger, and I would strongly recommend against them. A postie style 125cc engine would be the minimum required, but that means getting a motorcycle licence.

About the jobs, yes, but I read a theory years ago, that with technology, there would be no need for huge, centralized city centers and buildings. So, what happened? It never evolved as they imagined, except for Covid, when it showed people can operate and work locally rather than gathering in an office, and yet we are going back to the old ways.

The trains are okay, but they can be scary at night after people have been out drinking. Brisbane buses are not well run, and about 30% of the passengers don’t bother to swipe their cards, if they even have them. I don’t feel particularly safe on buses, particularly those that go from the RBWH through the valley to the city. But there is no security, and nobody checks to see if people have paid their fare. How are they going to make sure people pay their bus fare on the new Metro? How are they going to keep the new Metro clean? And they are talking about putting up a stadium in a place where there is no railway station. They should put it up over all the railway lines between Bowen Hills and Albion stations.

you say we only have one rail Bridge when we have 3 with 1 in the inner city and 2 side by side in the west what can still link south east Brisbane and southern lines via Tennyson loop and is under used link what could bypass lot people from needing to go via the city and go from the west by train linking gold coast and Ipswich and also linking to the south-east side of Brisbane as the network is setup for that link as it was the only way to get to the south side Brisbane before city bridge was build back in the late 70's
