The crazy thing is they do a new show each week! Matching bands begins at the high school level. You should look up Bands of America to see some of the high school bands. Unlike college bands, high school level works on the same show all season. They start with just a few minutes of the program, then add another portion each week until the final production is around 20 minutes in length.
@Hecteacher4 ай бұрын
The high school where I taught for 35 years learns a completely new show every 2 weeks. It is performed for a home game and an away game and then they do a new show. The marching drill and all music is memorized. That means 5 shows a year, memorizing 15 pieces of music, not counting pregame and post game performances.
@danhollifield4 ай бұрын
@@Hecteacher, exactly! My High School accepted the final-year Middle School band members into the Marching band, just to boost the number of band members. At least 2 weeks every Summer, we went to Band Camp to begin learning the basics for what the Band Director had in mind for halftime shows in the upcoming year. Vicki, James, every step of every member of the band & flag corps & majorettes are choreographed like a dance. Every band member learns to take a standardized step distance so that the patterns can be made correctly. We also had to memorize our sheet music for each song in each show as well. Each show was used once at home, and once when we were playing at another school. By the time a band student reaches the College level, they have been learning the marching basics for a at least 4 years, an hour every school day, plus 2 to 3 two-hour nights a week. Plus concert band or orchestra, possibly Jazz Band, plus a Christmas concert, plus playing at the High School Graduation ceremonies. Each show is roughly 15 to 18 hours of practice--while learning the basics of the next show at the same time. --Dan

It's so easy to forget just how much work it takes to be able to do this on a physical level. There's the mental aspect where they have to remember the music, spots, etc, but they also have to have a ton of stamina. They're moving around quickly for several minutes without a break, while carrying their instruments, while playing their instruments. Some people have a hard enough time when it comes to jogging, but imagine doing that while also playing an instrument. They can't even have their breathing off or else it could keep them from playing correctly. It's just baffling to think of how much actual work is involved in this, but there's a reason why they're the gold standard.

You’ll need to watch the Rose Parade on New Year’s Day (or Jan 2 if Jan 1 is on a Sunday). It’s in Pasadena (in Los Angeles county) and a lot of the top marching bands and some children’s marching bands from around the world (apparently Japan started showing the Rose Parade and other similar things and now they do marching bands, too, as well as other places). And so you see amazing floats and a ton of huge marching bands (and some cowboy groups and some Native American groups, etc) and they all have to match the 2+ miles of the parade route plus the staging route. So it’s really neat and runs for a couple hours but it’s a good way to see a lot of cool things and how marching bands march and do entertaining things for parades and when they don’t have the ability to do these fancy shows like you’re watching!!

They would have lunch around 11. Then be inside for music only practice from 12-3 then back outside from 3-5. Dinner was at 5 then practice until 8 pm Monday - Friday. Then once school started they would have band practice from 1 pm until 5 except on Wednesdays they would stay until 8 pm. Band parents made sure meals and snacks were provided for the band and colorguard.

I was in the Iowa State marching band which is about the same level as this, 330 strong. This looks like a repeat show I'm guessing (not the first time they've performed it) as it's very refined. Usually we had 2 weeks to learn a show, except our last show was typically a repeat. First few days was exclusively music rehearsal, end of the first week we learned charts along with continuing sectional music practices, and then second week we stepped through the field drills to the charts with the music, more sectional practices & put it all together. And a full dress rehearsal on game day on the indoor practice football field. You memorize the music and your coordinates in that time. There were smaller sections within the band (usually 8 people) that would act as a single unit and have a upper classman leader to make sure their group was doing the right thing. We practiced for a couple hours 5, sometimes 6 days a week. It was very organized. We learned around 5 shows a season.

I like to turn on a college football game several times each autumn as a soundscape while I am doing other things in the house. It sounds so unique with the cheering, the announcers, and the bands playing . . . it is a real autumn sound to me. Most high school marching bands do something less so but still complex and play the music by rote. We learned a new routine each week. The university bands have try-outs and select the best of that 4-6 years of experience group to be members of their bands, of students attending. It's like a club; it's in addition to their classes . . . and generally they learn several routines like this one in a season, many with only a week to learn to play the music well and march the patterns. It's great fun to do and to watch.

Here in the USA we do this at the High School level as well so by College you have already had 4 years of practicing this kind of Field Show. Of course College takes it to a whole new professional level than High School. High School and College you only get a week to practice a new show as you do a new Field Show for each home game. These students are going to school everyday, doing homework and writing essays and still have band/Field Show practice after class to learn the movements and new music. It’s a lot of dedication to the Band, your High School/college, the fans and your studies/homework. Also you have to keep your grades up or you can’t be in Band so these students are not dummies and they’re self motivated and dedicated to be able to do all of this. I loved band and doing the Field Shows when I was in High School. It’s a lot of work but so much fun too. Your band mates are like family since you spend so much time together. ❤

A little insight for you. Halftime is a 20 minute break between the 2nd and 3rd quarter in American Football. Typically both teams bands will perform. The Ohio State Marching band also goes by TBDBITL (T-bittle) It stands for The Best Damn Band In The Land! They typically learn 6 shows per season, plus pre-game and "Script Ohio" which is performed at home before the game starts. They also (along with other schools) Have their "Stand Tunes" that they play during the game. TBDBITL has Buckeye Swag, Hang on Sloopy, Fight the Team, Buckeye Battlecry, and many others. An Ohio State home football game should be on everyone's bucket list. I am partial because I live here. So, if you can't make it here, a Nebraska, Penn State, Iowa (If only for the Children's Hospital Wave) Or Texas games would be decent substitutes.

Mom, in answer to your question, the amt. of time they have to learn this is between 1 home game and the next, which is usually a week, maybe 2. During that time, they spend more time on the field than the football team. Also, at a high level university like Ohio State, they can get a sizable scholarship to offset their tuition costs. You may have missed it during your talking--the 2nd. movie (with Mt. Doom) was Lord of the Rings. You guessed Jurassic Park. What's really hilarious in this section is that the dinosaur sees someone down near the 10 yard marker in the lower right, who's supposed to be a player from U. of Michigan--the opposing team. He swallows him, then spits out his helmet a few seconds later. The next one was, of course, Pirates of the Caribbean. The ship on the left is Michigan, which was, of course, sunk by the home team. May I suggest you look up something else that's equally amazing? It's called DCI (Drum Corps Int'l.), which consists of 15-21 year old kids practicing a show for the coming summer all year long, then taking it out to football stadiums all summer long almost every evening, where they usually meet 11 other corps doing the same thing. In mid-Aug., they meet in Indianapolis for the final competition to determine the world champion.
