I live between an Army base and an Airforce Base, not to mention, south of the Air Force Academy. When the President shows up in town, we just don't leave the house. Roads are blocked off, traffic is backed up and it is one giant headache.

I touched the AF1 when Reagan went to Japan. It was kept at Atsugi and during a FOD walkdown, I bent over to pick up a piece of something and reached up to us it to keep my balance. I did it without thinking and there is a marine there with a gun watching us closely.

In Albuquerque, NM AF-1 can land at the airport because the Sunport and Kirtland AFB are adjacent to each other. I've seen it come in for a landing and come in low directly over my house. I'm about 5 miles from the Sunport. It's huge and very impressive. All of the crew onboard are Air Force personnel, so no Garin, they don't get paid a lot of money.

I live in the landing path of our local airport. AF1 is massive, but a sight to see it landing because it's so close to our house. Also, we lose internet service until they are in the Beast, so there can be no access to AF1's internet or communication. Even communication with the towers at the airport is blocked. FYI - you mentioned the food and having steak. I learned during the Obama years, that the President pays for all of their everyday meals, snacks, etc.. They can have anything they want, but they do receive a grocery bill every month.

I was at a Trump Rally in 2018 (he was President then) and it was at our airport. I was at the rope line right in front of him and behind him was Air Force One. The most beautiful jet I've ever seen. When the President was arriving, the tower linked to the pilot in AF1 and we in the crowd could hear them speak to each other. Then from the speakers came the theme song from the movie Air Force One. So darn emotional.

I’ve been fortunate enough to see President Reagan twice in person; the day after the Gander Crash 1985 (Arrow Air Flight 1285R) and at the Brandenburg Gate, Berlin Germany, June 12 1987 (Mr Gorbachev Tear Down This Wall speech). We also saw President GW Bush when Air Force One landed at Pearl Harbor/Hickman Joint Base, Hawaii 2006 (Meet & Greet). If I get the chance, I would like to see soon to be President Trump in Arizona during his next term (he was here yesterday with RFK Jr.). They are the only three Presidents in my lifetime that I would go out of my way to see in person. Our American Dream (military family) thrives to fruition under Republican/Conservative Presidents and we’ve suffered under Democrat Presidents (pay cuts, inflation, high taxes, defense spending cuts, base closures, cost of living expenses, environment regulations, education, health care resources, etc) every time.

Garrin asked what the guy in charge of the repairs to the plane can do if an engine goes out, he obviously can't fix it while they're flying. What no one mentioned is that the plane doesn't need all of it's engines to fly, though it needs to maintain 3 of its 4 engines to safely stay in the air.

One correction. Air Force One does occasionally land at commercial airports. Most of the time they land on military bases but I used to work at LAX and it flew in a couple times.

Also Charleston WV is a combined military and commercial airport named for a local hero Chuck Yeager who became an Ace in a P51 mustang and later broke the sound barrier. They use a smaller bird for POTUS but the 747 crew does like to practice here from time to time as Yeager is on the small side for the 747 but can handle them.

🤙Many years ago, I was riding my motorcycle to attend a college class on a military base in Hawaii. I turned the corner to park on the side of the school building, as I always did, and just across the street was Air Force 1, parked on the tarmac of the airfield on the other side of a secure fence. What a surprise! I knew the president was in town, but I hadn't even thought about the plane. Since I was early for class, I sat atop a picnic table in the outdoor break area and looked at the plane, knowing that this would be the closest I would ever get to it. It looked so unassuming from the outside. I sure was wishing I could go on board and take a look around instead of going to class that day 😉

A couple of answers to some questions. The food supply limits time in the air. Many of the components can be fixed from within. Except for the engines, obviously. And a blown engine, or even two would not force a landing. It would just reduce efficiency and speed. A craft like that could actually remain airborne with a single engine. Or advisable, but doable.

Any Plane or Helicopter or Vehicle is designated 1 to show the President is on that particular mode of Transport and the vP's modes of Transportation is 2 like Air Force 2.

Funny thing is, you kind of get used to it. I used to live near (then) Andrews AFB, and saw AF1 take offs and landings often enough. ...and also found myself sitting stopped on the road a number of times while motorcades drove by -- probably the most memorable being Pope John-Paul II. At least at the time, it was pretty easy to get on-base to visit someone or maybe play some tennis.

The US president is often called "the most powerful person on earth". This has been true since the end of WW2. Makes sense, the first presidential leader of any country, the largest economy, most advanced military, cultural hegemony, the most political influence on global affairs. The leader of such a country needs to be protected, especially considering our loss of a few very significant presidents in our short history like Abraham Lincoln and JFK.

If a plane is warned that it is too close and it does not take corrective actions the plane will be fired upon as a threat.

A plane engineer doesn't fix the plane. The engineer helps make flight plans and performs system checks. If the plane malfunctions the engineer would pull out the troubleshooting checklist and start working through it.

My stepmother was head of security at the White House and when he traveled. I got to meet Jimmy Carter personally in the Oval office which while cool I've always been a staunch conservative. The phone being off (airplane mode) is for safety, especially during takeoff and landing. A phone sends out radio waves and can interfere with the plane's avionics. It can also interfere with ground communications. It's never been proven to be a cause of a crash, in theory it could, possibly. Using a phone isn't the issue, but the radio waves it sends out when sending or receiving a call or text is the issue. So, they tell us to use "airplane mode" as that shuts off that aspect of the phone.

A girl that age out with her friends doesn't need a lot of things to do in town. Air Force One is just those two. With over powered engines & specialized parts. Plus if AF1 goes outside the US a couple (I think) of C-17s go ahead for logistics. I'm a little surprised it only cost $206k an hour to operate. I guess the video told all this. LOL!!

I think the Boeing contract should be canceled with all the QC issues and I think for both the twin diplomatic AF1 and the Doomsday planes a better replacement would be based on the C5 military cargo plane (or the next cargo plane to replace the C5) . First already Mil spec only needing interior work, not a full custom rebuild to harden it. Also existing ramp (that could be left or modified for roll/walk in for a POTUS like FDR, Ford or Biden with issues with stairs) Both types should be one design (already near identical equipment in 2 custom configurations doubling design cost) that would reduce cost per unit by at least a quarter. Also with the upgraded military cargo plane the (identical to the eye) motorcade planes act as additional decoys with zero added cost. Now 2 identical custom rebuilt 747 planes fly per security rules with the second plane often just empty. The car carriers could at great reduced cost plan a period of circling before or after to serve the decoy role as they already play leapfrog with AF1 landing at least one ahead and taking one off after (normally at least 2 for most trips with 18 cars each.) BTW I live under Yeager's flight path and the AF1 crews like to practice out of Yeager because it is one of the smaller Airports able to handle the 747 (If it is a POTUS visit to Charleston WV they use a smaller plane for him instead for a greater safety margin) One rule for the big planes is a four engine requirement that also makes the choice limited because the 747 and other commercial 4 engine birds are no longer being built.

Air Force One is NOT as fast as an F-16. The F-16 is a supersonic jet fighter with a top speed of Mach 2.05 or nearly 1500 miles per hour. The airplane is basically the flying White House and every contingency is planned for. FYI, if you do penetrate it's airspace, you WILL be shot down if you fail to obey the command to vacate the security zone. All the Air Force staff manning the aircraft are required to pass stringent background and security checks. The pilot of Air Force One are normally full colonels which is one rank below a one star general. They carry backup pilots in case of sickness or for long flights. While they have no escort, every military station along it's flight path whether it be Air Force, Navy, or Marines will have aircraft on alert and ready to get airborne immediately in case something should go wrong. Air Force One is passed along to the next base just like commercial aircraft are passed on to the next air traffic controller. The fuel is tested, loaded onto a fuel truck and the tanks sealed at every airport the aircraft lands at. The truck(s) is also under armed guard and in a secured location.
