I live in California and work with many homeless people directly, through my church. All of them have drug alcohol or mental issues. One lady I know has been on the street for almost 20 years. They are unwilling to go to a shelter, (maybe for a day or two if it is raining or they are ill) yet unable to care for themselves in a way that would enable them to get off the street.

I live in Oklahoma, but I'm from Cali, and the homeless between the two states are like a different species. Most of the homeless living here in Oklahoma, like if you saw them walking around town, you'd never guess most were homeless. They actually take care of themselves here. California is just one big stereotype and that includes the homeless there lol.

I was a homeless addict in Massachusetts. A lot of us would stay on the streets because of the rules. In at 7pm with one cigarette allowed after right before lights out. Up at 5 and out by 6 with all your stuff. No drugs or alcohol. So if u were sick youd stay out so I could get well, if I had drugs you’d stay out so u can do them and other then that if it’s not freezing or raining hard it’s more convenient to be on streets where you live on your time.

Homelessness is created. It is a dilemma formed intentionally and is one of the highest funded social program in the US. It’s political purpose in CA is the ultimate goal of splitting the state so they can gain additional senate house seats and votes and a permanent Democrat majority.

The little islands off San Francisco (Farallón Islands) are a wildlife refuge. The islands off Los Angeles are the Channel Islands- 5 are part of a national park, 2 have navy bases only, and only 1 has a civilian population- Santa Catalina island with a population of just over 4,000, most in the city of Avalon.

In regards to natural disasters, major earthquakes hardly ever happen, wildfires occur primarily in the forests that are usually really far away from cities, and floods happen mostly in areas that do not have flood control measures in place, like in the central valley or small towns. In LA, we had flash flooding but that only happens while rain is coming down by the next day the streets are no longer flooded.

The CA city I live in had a deadly flood in the 1950's, and since then our local river has been widened and paved over at least two times. For insurance reasons, our location from the river is considered a flood zone. It has more to do with a dam that overflowed than the amount of rain in one day. Many of the houses built from the 1940's to 1960's are built about 2 feet off the ground, they have a crawl space underneath.

Most of the homeless people I’ve met in California aren’t from California though. There are a bunch from Illinois, Texas, and Wisconsin. Apparently it’s much nicer to sleep outdoors in specific areas in California (where the homeless concentrate) than almost anywhere else. And they get offered train tickets to CA if they leave those areas. I think if California somehow manages to find a solution to homelessness, it might not work as well since we’ll still keep getting homeless from out of state. The majority of Californian homeless I have met tend to be the ones staying in hotels or in RVs/cars.

I left California in 2018, I was in Southern Cali and there was just waaay too many people and the roads couldn't handle it so going any distance during rush hour was insane and the public transportation was shit so no one used it unless they're going into LA daily from 50-100 miles east. It's the most amazing place as far as climate, geography and pop culture, which is why so many people are drawn to it and why so many people stay. But it's not for everyone and it definitely wasn't for me. Some of my favorite places I've ever been to are in California. Keep in mind that one reason there are so many homeless camps in LA is that the city was sued in Federal Court and there is a court order that restricts how LA city can "interact" with the homeless...Cities like Beverly Hills and West Hollywood, for example, are not part of the lawsuit, and those cities can prevent the homeless from camping there, meaning more people end up camping in LA where the city has its hands tied by the federal court order. I always think the city of LA should have moved the homeless camps to the federal judge's home :)

Yeah, California is complicated. I've seen many videos on the problems they're facing out there and from an outsider's perspective it basically boils down to California won't get out of its own way to fix the problems they have. They know what they need to do, but they refuse to let it get fixed for..."reasons". TBH, I really don't know how long this can go on for before the state has a world class massive economic crash that'll send shock waves across the rest of the country and the world. Eventually, something will happen over there whether they manage to fix things or a big crash happens. I'm really hoping for the former, but it'll likely be the later and when that happens, everyone will be mad at California, not just the Californians.

@@nicolejamieson35 I'm from here and I agree with most of what OP said. The only thing I don't fully agree with is, we "know what [we] need to do, but [we] refuse.." For some big problems such as the homelessness one spoken of here, I don't think we know what we need to do. Well lots of people think they do but I've never heard a viable long term comprehensive solution proposed. I strongly agree with the sentiment that we get in our own way though. I see many in CA arguing/fighting about things instead of discussing. I see a lot of resisting ideas just because of political class, economic class, etc. divisions rather than trying to work together to find an improvement. I see a lot of selfishness and self-centered / localized thinking - for example, "If an issue isn't affecting me directly or someone I personally know then it isn't a real problem". One could argue though, that that is something that affects the US as a whole and not just unique to California.

alright at 18:18 the video is mistaken on how the government in the US works at the Federal level. The Senators are not for "the people" but for the State government with all States getting 2 as per the compromise for little states to stay as part of the US at the founding. It wasn't until much later after the founding that the States allowed it's citizens to vote for who their Senators are Federally as originally it was up to the State Legislator to pick them for Congress. The Representatives are broken down by population size so places like California have more Representatives than say Colorado.

California is definitely a great place to visit. It is beautiful, has amazing climate, great food, and many entertainment attractions in pristine condition. Living here on the other hand is a struggle if you are not already rich or have a good job that will lead you away from poverty. I think I've said it before. If you have a social safety net of reliable people around you that can help you then you should be fine, but if you try to live in California on your own you'll probably end up homeless sooner or later. Saying if you try to live in California by yourself and you'll become homeless tells me you don't understand that California is a large state. If you mean San Francisco, that still is not a given, but it will be more challenging to accomplish. There are almost endless smaller cities and towns where the cost of living isn't bad...at all. Also, I am not rich but I don't struggle in San Diego....sooo, it tells me you made a biased determination and are just going to stick to it.
@erickvillegas8327
@erickvillegas8327 Жыл бұрын
@T Calvin M Sure, I made a biased determination and have lived in many cities in both northern and southern California for upwards of two decades now. Rent is much more affordable in smaller towns like Visalia, Merced, and even Bakersfield (to some extent) than in the LA metropolitan and San Francisco Bay areas. I saw people managing by themselves in those towns if they had good paying jobs, but I also saw homelessness which tells me that even in small towns, you can become homeless if you are not prepared to handle sudden financial woes. I love California and do not plan on leaving it, but we have to acknowledge the reality that when people face hardship after hardship, in California, more so than in any other state, the likelihood of you becoming homeless is higher especially when substance abuse is involved. You saying you are not rich and do not struggle while living in San Diego does not prove anything. I'm sure there are hundreds of thousands of people who also live in San Diego and are struggling. I live in LA and do not struggle. The idea that I could claim that because I do not struggle that no one else should struggle is preposterous. Attempting to use anecdotal evidence to supplement a claim should be discouraged since it can easily be invalidated. Sorry, Thurston (if you read this comment).I usually try to leave more positive comments on your videos.

@@erickvillegas8327 I'm glad you admit your bias but using absurd logical leaps doesn't really do you any favors. Furthermore, you are going to claim those who live in California struggle more than anywhere else with finances while the highest rates of poverty exist in Calif...whoops, not California, actually it is in the south. You now try to pull out "anecdotal evidence to supplement a claim", a fair claim if you were beginning from a point of a logical argument, but instead start with "you'll probably end up homeless sooner or later". Essentially an appeal to extremes: "a proportion of the population struggle financially in California and become homeless, thus you will likely become homeless!". Using a logical fallacy does not require a serious retort. We absolutely can, and should, acknowledge our issues and try to fix them, but trying to go full dystopic panic about it, claiming that no where else in the US struggles as much is just not born out in the facts.

@@tcalvinm1981 The problem I see from being out of state and also from a similar place in Canada which I had to leave to kentucky for the same reasons (victoria, BC). The entire state government is controlled by the big cities and surrounding suburbs. As in they have so much population that the state government is determined by how they vote. And when the cities are that screwed up, the rest of the state is at the mercy of those terrible policies. It'd be different if there were city-issued bans on assault weapons, banning gas cars by 2035, etc but they are implemented as 'state-wide' which means some small town in central cali that relies on gas machinery and vehicles has to comply with largely the cities' ideas. I know cost of living is lower in more rural areas and smaller towns but if the cities weren't THAT degenerate in their policy, the rest of the state would be more liveable. Cost of living would be lower, homelessness would be lower, all the ridiculous regulations wouldn't need to be followed. There wouldn't be rolling blackouts and not enough water among so many other issues. All of those problems are caused by the cities and their dumb politicians that run the state government. Similar thing with oregon where most of the state is conservative but just the coast and portland have enough influence that democrats are elected every single time as a majority. I highly doubt any place east of portland wanted to decriminalize heroin and cocaine but they have to deal with it because portland's politicians said so.

@@pc2555 I always have to caution people with a simple axiom when talking about "most of the state" a lot of the time: Land doesn't vote, people do. It's the silly maps that show huge amounts of red when talking about the country but when a population map is used, oops! The red really shrinks! Now, I don't condone minimizing people's votes at all, but these claims that conservative "TRULY" rule the country if not for them meddling cities is quite absurd. I am also amused I keep being told the things that are apparently happening to me in and others I know in California such as brownouts and we can't drink enough water because it is a dystopia. Can it happen? Sure. Is it something I have to plan my life around...uh, no. Kentucky has a lot of lovely things about it but when it takes over double the federal money for every dollar given in tax, it is not exactly a paragon of prosperity and utopia. A lot of people will say that they would rather deal with California’s problems than any other state’s problems, I think this is because even with all the hardship we have a lot of programs and support to help people. Imo I also believe California is one of the most empathetic states filled with people who actually want to create a sustainable environment for themselves and future generations.

Our homeless issue is bad. Very bad. But a large portion is due to people coming to CA without proper financial preparation. It's expensive here and people aren't prepared for it. I've been in CA for 35 years and, while there are serious issues, I'd rather live here poor than anywhere else in the country rich. Why? On a side note, I have seen a significant amount of new buildings being built all across LA. It seems that LA City officials are finally cooperating with county officals and the mayor's office to get a lot more affordable housing units built in various cities. They seem to follow the same format of concrete garages/commercial units on the lower levels and wooden housing units on top. Hopefully, something similar is also happening in northern California as well. Residents are not usually willing to allow affordable housing be built near where they live because they worry of how it will affect their property value. However, they come around when they are told those housing units are gonna come with additional luxury apartment units and potentially a Starbucks or Chick-fil-A on the first floor.

California is 26th in poverty in the US which means 25 states have a larger percentage of people in poverty than California. Not sure where you heard that one, but it is a misconception. Not a dystopia in any way. -I'm not sure why our collective GDP would be an issue. -Few people live on Catalina islands. - the homeless is heartbreaking but we are also one of the 3 largest populations in the country so the percentage there is actually skewed. However, the milder climate does attract a lot of homeless who are less likely to freeze to death as in other states. -The images shown of the homeless are of Skid Row. Downtown LA, which has a seedy and nefarious origin (look that one up). The narrator seems to be leaning towards the extreme negative when talking about us building permanent homes for the homeless and we actually have a lot of shelters and charities near Skid Row. -Take this entire video with a grain of salt please. The person speaking is controlling the narrative and has yet to say anything positive about the state. One of the only states in the US to guarantee permanent breakfast and lunch for all children enrolled in public schools in the state? Yeah. We do have that. - Atherton wealthy residents putting a stop to 16 units of "desperately needed" housing? Seriously? Because no other cities in the country have rich people that do that, especially the ultra-wealthy? When speaking of the fraction of 2.0+ in some areas the comparison was Austin, Denver - cities that are not comparable. Try looking at NYC or Chicago. - the 'California Dream' with all of the footage from the 50's was actually the 'American Dream'. Not sure why he's sticking this to us from 80 years ago. - mountain lions are important and we've been infringing on their land too far. -San Francisco is the area being shown when he's talking about committees. Um, San Francisco has over 750k residents. Think about that. It is already - crowded. -Wildfires? I believe Australia also has issues of wildfires as do some Mediterranean countries. Flooding is very recent in some areas because we've been in a drought for years. -As far as taxes go - yes, we pay more and get less. I've lived here most of my life and have never heard anyone complain about poverty states getting more money/services. Where is he getting his data? - I can name at least a dozen GOP run states passing laws that undermine the Federal government in the past month - mainly Texas and Florida. - secession- the polls are of a small sampling of the population, usually a few thousand respondents - making the results deceptive. Yes, some people have tried to start movements just as some have started movements for other fringe ideas. Calling California unique then comparing it to a few other states but a lot of other countries is crazy. Whoever put this together is reputable only if they did this to 49 other states with the same negative bias, and he hasn't. Oh and stating that our politicians are terrible, the "GOP talking points might be right" and "liberal politics are structurally flawed" should explain the extreme bias this video is about. Was this released by the actual GOP or some SuperPac?

While it is not perfect, the effort in Texas to build affordable housing and even housing for homeless is way ahead of more liberal states like California or Illinois. I live in a high income city (175k household income) and we have trailer parks and apartments. In liberal places I lived those two things were definitely banned. The only requirement for trailers here is that they be 2005 or better I think. We also have whole apartment complexes for seniors and anyone that are based on income. This in a city where you in line at McDonald’s with Bentleys, Rolls Royces and whatever exotic car you can imagine. I am starting to think liberalism is flawed or maybe just the people who believe in it are flawed.

The governor of California told the homeless to move to California because the government would be able to demand more money from the federal government to "care for" the homeless. The politicians just want more money and they really do not care for the homeless at all. The current governor of California spent millions trying to get people from Florida to relocate to California. But that failed royally because Florida has a financial surplus and California is broke. Moreover, what pisses California off even more is that Florida has low taxes and no state taxes on income along with nice budget surplus. If you really want to get California to be better off, you need to get all the corrupt politicians out of office.

For anyone believing or arguing that San Francisco has a bad street violence problem because of the recent widely reported stabbing of a tech mogul, tonight it was reported that the perp was another techie who knew him and apparently had a personal beef. It was not evidence of a high level of street violence (which San Francisco doesn't have--property crime, yes; violent crime, no). It might even be argued that the city's strict gun control laws (there are no gun stores in the city nor have they yet given out any concealed weapons permits in spite of court decisions that they must) turned what might have been a shooting into a stabbing.

Overall, this is an excellent video but I do have some criticisms: - Lots of California's homeless are from elsewhere. Not only is the weather incredibly benign for outdoor living compared to much of the country (rarely too cold or too hot), but the state offers generous benefits and its generally liberal governments hesitate to crack down on misdemeanor legal violations like camping on public property (and when they do, courts often block their efforts). - Most of the long-term homeless in CA cities are either drug addicted or mentally ill. This is not true of short-term homeless but most people who are neither mentally nor hooked on drugs find some way to get off the street within a few months. CA is incredibly accepting of drug use. In San Francisco, you can basically use any substance in public and sell many of them without being bothered by the police (and if you do get arrested, the odds are excellent a judge will cause you to be released without penalty).

This video still blames the wrong thing for increasing homelessness. It's not the cost of housing as a leading factor. If that were true, all the other areas in the US with high cost of living (there are many) would have similar numbers. The issue really is hard drugs. Once you've completely nuked your brain, there's no going back. At this point, people get called mentally ill and there's no legal way to force them into treatment. In California (and most of the US), a crazed person in the middle of a complete crisis can say "no" to care. Typically they then treat their problem with more drugs. I lived and worked in some of the worst areas in and around SF, paid to have cleaning crews sweep our street and sidewalks for needles each day, and paid to have the street bleeched twice/week to get rid of the feces and urine all as a courtesy to the neighbors and so we could continue doing business without having to embarrass ourselves when clients came to the office. The needles on the sidewalk tell the story. When it comes to housing prices, Proposition 13 was the real death of affordable housing (in 1978). That means that your taxes stay the same on your house, no matter how much its value increases. So people NEVER sell their house. If they sell their house (bought for $100k in 1980 and now worth $2M), they would then buy another house at say $2M, but pay taxes on $2M instead of $100k....every year. The way California treats the rest of the US? Well, an alternate version of this video could have been: California is a dick.

When you subsidize something, you get more of it. Cali subsidizes being homeless by paying them $600 a month. No requirements to get the money. People hear about this and they come from all over. They decriminalize camping on the street, doing drugs and shoplifting. Only makes sense that you get more of it when you tolerate it and pay people to do it. Yes, they have a huge economy but they are losing tons of the large companies to states like Texas. Target, Walgreens and Walmart are closing lots of stores due to the rampant shoplifting. Cali has a budget of $2 billion to deal with the homelessness but somehow the problem has gotten worse, not better. Cali may be on top now but they are definitely heading in the wrong direction. Maybe just try to vote for something different. The politicians you have now don't seem to be getting it done.

Many of the States with higher homeless populations also have some of the best/most temperate climates in the United States. I'd rather be homeless in San Diego where it's an average of 72 degrees Fahrenheit/22.2 Celsius or Colorado where we average 310 days of sunshine per year than any place too hot or too cold. Also, most of those States are Democratic and have better funding for support systems to help people struggling with homelessness.
@pc2555
@pc2555 Жыл бұрын
This is the misconception that is just naive to me. You are under the impression that most of the homeless are 'struggling'. The majority of them that cause the problems are DRUGG ADDICTS and CHOOSE to live that way. They literally leave their jobs sometimes in other states and decide to get high all the time and get freebies on the street. There are a lot of people who are in a dire financial situation who end up there but those aren't the issue. Those policies that 'help' those drug addicts are not helpign them, they are enabling their bad behavios and it encourages more people to become homeless thats why the rate is increasing. You gotta stop with this 'poor homeless people' mentality that all of them deserve empathy; they don't. Most of them are sick, dysfunctional, mentally ill and irresponsible and deliberately choose to not live life and just get high and be taken care of. The more you give them the more they will take forever.

CA has very little debt and you obviously don't know what you are talking about. The state constitution requires a balanced operating budget so the state borrows only for long term capital projects (like a person might borrow for a house or car). CA's state debt is 3.99% of its GDP (compared to the US national debt or about 100%). For the last several years, CA ran massive budget surpluses and accumulated a multi-billion $ reserve. This year, it would have about a $20 billion deficit which it could either pay for out of that reserve or eliminate with some budget cuts (or a little of both). We'll see what choice it makes. But the one thing out can't do is borrow to cover the problem.

It's not california specifically, it's the politics in some very specific cities. Also, there's zero reason for california to have turned down pipeline construction to canada, and they also have their own offshore drilling which gets heavily stifled by politics. It's almost like democrats actually _want_ foreign dependance on oil... They even strike down offshore windfarms and large solar installations because they might 'block the view'... The handful of oil drilling operations are forced to build and maintain an actual island, with a full island facade to hide the drills as much as possible. There's about 100 different political problems that directly affect this massive homeless and crime population. You can see very similar problems in cities with very similar politics. And very different outcomes in cities with very different politics. This is why you'll get hate for even acknowledging that California is a cesspool. It's 100% political. And it's not anything new, I grew up in the 80's and 90's when california was known for it's gang wars and bio-hazard beaches that would get closed from too many drug needles on the ground... LA is the only city in the US where you genuinely have to be careful to not step in human shit on the sidewalk. And I'm not talking about poor neighborhoods... The high income and GDP of California is due to 2 things. The largest "export" in the US and largest percentage of the entire US GDP comes from the entertainment industry, which is largely based in california. The rest can be accounted for with the big tech companies and generationally wealthy.

California doesn’t even have the worst homelessness rate. For the past couple decades, Hawaii has been the worst, but in 2020, NY passed them to become the highest at 46.6 per 10,000 people. California’s homelessness seems to get more attention because 1. It’s more obvious with huge communities in SF and especially in Skid Row in LA and 2. It’s conservative propaganda. The entire country struggles with homelessness and most state’s solution (looking at you Texas) is to round up their homeless and ship them to California where there are more sympathetic policies regarding the treatment of the homeless population. Also, many homeless people move to California on their own because of said policies (which are still abysmal, but are generous when compared to the rest of the country) and because they won’t be at the mercy of uncomfortable and dangerous weather. Also, most of the criticism in regard’s to California’s homelessness is done in bad faith because it mostly comes from conservatives and Republicans who don’t actually care about the well-being of the population - they just wield it as a weapon against California because it represents everything they’re against both economically and socially. And let’s not forget that it’s conservative policies, like Reagan’s defunding of mental institutions, predatory healthcare costs, and unregulated housing policies, that drive most people to homelessness. None of these critics have any real plans to help these people. They just want them to stop existing.

Wendover is very balanced imo, and I gave the video a view. It' critical, but not bashing.

Someone A big liar, California is one best state in America. I don't live there, also. Only Problem they have is Corrupted Corporations that operate within the state.

This is ignoring how big the state is. Big state equals big numbers. It's also a popular state with lots of cities. Florida, Mississippi, Louisiana, Wyoming, and Tennessee also have horrible problems but they are smaller states, have less population, smaller cities and less social and economical influence. Texas, a state more comparable to California also has a lot of low class and homeless people and huge economic problems of their own. California Democrats actually acknowledge the homeless and thus that's why they are in the spotlight. Other states ignore them or worse criminalize them while making the situation worse.

Not a serious video. Dude spent so much time talking about California secession and not mentioning where they will get their water from. 😂

Not every part of California is going through ruff times...Its not like Detroit or Philadelphia. CALIFORNIA is still a great place to visit and live🌅🌄🌁🌁🌉 If I were homeless, I rather be homeless in California than any other state 😮😮😮
