I think the discrepancy is that some substances have wildly different effects in humans and animals, which is where almost all “may cause” [x disease] claims come from since it hasn’t been confirmed in humans. Most of the time, these chemical food ingredients might react differently in animals and in an abundance of caution they are removed by certain countries’ regulatory environment. There are things that are banned in the US out an abundance of caution but perfectly legal in the EU or Japan, for example. Every country selectively cherry picks its risks and risk tolerances. Many chemical ingredients kill roaches but humans can tolerate it, which is why we can buy insecticides at the store. A lot of times these animal studies also use dosages and absorption methods that do not reflect how humans use it. We don’t drink insecticides or sunscreen, for example…but many animal studies testing the safety of these ingredients might inject gallons of these ingredients into a rat to test the limits that humans couldn’t possibly reach while using the product. If a tumor forms or the rat dies, they might try to replicate it in humans only to realize that you can’t ethically force feed or inject humans gallons of a foul-tasting chemical like you can with animals and there is no effect at normal dosages and absorption methods. It’s important context that’s often left out of why there is no agreement on what is too dangerous to allow people to buy between culturally-similar countries in the Western world.

When it comes to many ingredients there's a lot of fear mongering involved. In many cases the amounts used is perfectly safe. It's only when they're consumed in very high doses that they're dangerous.
@mod8502 жыл бұрын
And let's face it, in animal studies, they are not concerned with remaining within even extreme human usage limits. They'll inject or feed or apply ridiculous amounts of a substance, looking for a result. Remember saccharine? It was banned in the us due to bad research practices, injecting and feeding colossal amounts of pure saccharine into rats and determined that saccharine causes cancer. Firstly, we don't inject saccharine. Secondly, we don't consume saccharine in the amounts given to these rats. If I injected thirty kilos of saccharine into my body, yeah I'd probably get a bad case of dead. But not in the minuscule amounts put into food and sweetener packets.

Don’t get me wrong I’ll have a brownie now and again but whether or not it’s good for me is about as far from my mind as possible while I’m indulging in that chocolaty goodness. As for supposed cancer-causing chemicals I take some of those claims with a large grain of salt. Also, most people are not overly alarmed because they believe that the "cancer causing agents" were given in HUGE doses to laboratory rats which made them develop cancer. You would have to feed humans buckets full of those ingredients to make up the same ingredient to body weight that was consumed by the rats who developed cancer.
@hackerx73292 жыл бұрын
A few points. One. People in different parts of the world have different genetic makeups that can either make them more prone to having issues with a particular ingredient or food while people from another region can consume it with no issue. To go with that some may consume foods together so that one counteracts something from another or they prepare a food differently. Take a look at Sushi. If prepared improperly or if the ingredients aren't handled properly there are many possible illnesses or parasites you could contract and if fugu is prepared incorrectly it can absolutely kill you. What wasn't known for a long time is that the wasabi often served with sushi in Japan is actually anti microbial and protect you from multiple types of bacteria. Two. Many things are potentially linked to cancer with no solid evidence one way or another. There is also the consideration of exposure levels. Some things can be harmful if you are exposed to even a small amount once while others can be perfectly safe even with daily low level exposure while a one time high exposure level can do damage. Everybody needs water and plenty of it but it is possible to drink too much and shut down your kidneys (very rare but there was a famous case involving a contest to win a Wii) or at the far extreme there is drowning. High levels of sodium are terrible for you but everybody needs some. The same goes for many vitamins. Three. Based on combinations of factors different countries set different standards for food safety including outright bans, consumption level recommendations, and labeling requirements. Short answer is the best advice is to look up for yourself what levels of ingredients are considered unsafe/harmful for you and consider how often you consume something and how much at once.

Can I be honest? I know that some of these foods are not healthy, at all. But I’ve done my own research and have found that it’s mostly nutritionists being dramatic. Metabolism differs from person to person, sometimes food is really bad for you, sometimes it’s not as bad. Truthfully I’ve heard many stories of people who had really bad diets who lived long and fulfilling lives. And I’ve heard stories about people who had very healthy diets who didn’t live very long. The problem with eating healthy is that, in my opinion, it’s quantity over quality. We want to live to be one hundred but we don’t want to enjoy it. I know some people will say “But you can enjoy it when you eat healthy” and that is true. But that fully depends on who you are not what you eat.

Last I knew, BHT and partially hydrogenated soybean oil are (or were) in almost all processed foods. Granted, I haven't been checking much _lately_ so if there've been recent changes, I wouldn't necessarily be aware of them. But back when I did read a lot of ingredients labels, these two were both literally more common than MSG. As for using substitutes for the banned ingredients, that's a treadmill that never ends. The substitutes end up being banned too, inevitably, and round and round it goes. The only way to do that is to limit yourself to ingredients that really *can't* be banned because the public would riot (apples, potatoes, tomatoes, flour, sugar, ...), but then you end up with a product that's not shelf stable and has to be consumed within days of being packaged, and in most cases it isn't very photogenic either. So in general you only change out ingredients when they get banned some place that *matters* because you sell a significant quantity of your product there, or else there's enough evidence that it hurts people, to potentially cost you a lot of money in a lawsuit. American breakfast cereal companies don't care very much if their product is illegal in Denmark and Switzerland, because those countries don't buy much American breakfast cereal anyway. It's like asking why Kinder doesn't just stop putting plastic bits in their chocolate eggs.

Just to weigh in on this video Kabir. You ask why these aren't banned if they are so problematic and proven to have these effects and the answer is very simple in that they have not. There are studies that claim to show a potential link between cancer and various things including those they showed in this video, but the link has always remained very tenuous and to this day has always remained unproven. The same types of studies say that drinking hot tea and coffee also cause cancer as well so why are we still drinking them? Ultimately I think it comes down to a difference in approach. Places like Sweden, Denmark and other parts of the EU often opt for an approach of banning things that may be dangerous until further studies prove that they are not. The US tends to do the opposite in allowing things until it's actually shown to be dangerous. Which is the better approach? Who knows, but we will likely always have differences in how we approach things until something is actually proven. Either way it's somewhat laughable that in the EU where almost 20% of people continue to smoke on a daily basis they are more concerned over the food dye and not the actual cause of most cancers.

You have to eat A LOT of these foods for them to not be safe, in moderation it’s fine. I usually buy 1 box of fun cereal a year so it won’t hurt me and I eat pop tarts for dessert usually once a month. Day to day I stay away from all packaged foods and I don’t eat dairy since breast cancer runs in my family. Let people make their choices. I remember years ago there was a news program warning pregnant women that eating too much tuna was dangerous because of the mercury causing a scare. Turns out you had to eat like 6 cans of tuna every single day for it to be bad. Who is doing that? You also have to eat pounds of cold cuts every day in order for them to cause cancer.

One thing that I consider funny is that overcooked meat is not healthy for people but they tell you to cook your meat well to avoid getting sick from undercooked meat which is more digestible and in the US most meet is either flash frozen or frozen for a long period of time to kill any bacteria or parasites that might be in it if they somehow survived all the antibiotics and pesticides they use on mass produced cattle in the first place. I've been eating raw meat since I was a couple years old and still haven't gotten any parasites or any serious bacterial infections from any yet and I'm 45 years old. I've also eaten a decent amount of uncooked chicken and haven't died from salmonella yet so I'm thinking somebody in charge of setting all these guidelines isn't exactly being truthful with everybody about how dangerous these things are. As for all the food dyes and chemical additives, I really don't see a point in even using dye on food to make it look more appealing, just let people get used to eating food in it's natural state. If you're so picky that you won't eat a hamburger because the meat got Gray from being exposed to the air because it didn't have enough red dye in it to keep it looking fresh or you won't buy certain candy because the coating isn't bright enough or drink something because the color is a little bit off clear or looks like dirty water instead of being bright blue or purple or green or whatever other color dye they put into all these products then I think you're just an idiot to begin with and have no real survival instinct and deserve to starve to death for being so picky. And if you're a food producing and distributing company that for some reason can't sell your products without them looking all colorful and psychedelic and having enough preservatives in them to make the product last for years (unless you're selling survival food) then maybe your products aren't that good to begin with and you need to rethink your business plan because you could make a lot more money selling just a good product even if it doesn't look good because you could cut down on half of your ingredients costs

RBST and others are not banned in the US, BUT most milk sold today is hormone and RBST free. So there is no real issue.

Yes, it would be great to see these hazardous ingredients removed. I think many people don’t realize they are in some of their favorite products. People are looking to be healthier & many companies are moving that way. As for things like brownies - people don’t eat then regularly, so it may be a risk they are willing to take for eating something once in a while.

Rbst is a man made version of BST which is a naturally occurring hormone in cows that aids in milk production. Check out Iowa Dairy Farmer. He explains it.

Most of the time the lab animals are getting doses that are 1000 times what they would consume otherwise. This will cause problems with most things. This is also why these companies don't change. Anything that causes problems with routine consumption the government steps in and makes them change it.

Oddly enough too much water is dangerous which is why I am demanding it be removed from all stores and homes.

If you listened to the video, not one of the "problematic" ingredients has been proven to cause anything. That's why those companies are still using them.

Companies want to produce things as inexpensively as possible, and as addictive as possible. They don't really care about consumers health, because there will always be more people to replace you if you die, or stop eating there products.

Ps) I have a theory that the years of steroids in meat products is directly related to huge size/ height changes over last 30 years. As well as the aggression that has become common. Food for thought. Pardon the pun.

I just assume that we have no way to NOT be poisoned unless we grow our own organic vegetables now. Being a US citizen is pretty dumb.

I never ate any of these as a kid accept for rice crispies. Probably because my mom is a health nut. Lol. But also because I just find most of these things disgusting. These sorts of chemicals should definitely be banned in the US. Seriously, there are other ways of making food that doesn't require possibly harmful chemicals!

I remember when they took the red dye out of hot dogs. Who cares? Does anyone miss it? As to the healthfulness of any product, I eat these occasionally, unless they're actively bad for you.

With the hydrogenated products listed in the video, that would cover most of the regular cookie/biscuit aisle. Lol. A good portion of the cereal aisle as well. I believe the alphabet soup things (BHT,etc) are preservatives. Those substances would likely allow products to last longer on the shelf. That in turn could effect the good 'ol bottom line. 😂🤣🤪

I like all of these foods and shouldn't eat any of them. They use these substances because they are good for business. Every one of them are non satiating. In other words, once you start eating them, you are compelled to eat way too much because you aren't going to get full and then you are going to crave more because they taste good. They stimulate that part of your brain that gives you pleasure. Some people absolutely won't touch foods like this, while others don't have that particular survival instinct! Jmo.
