The best restaurants in the US are not chain restaurants or fast food chains. The best restaurants in almost every US city are either family-owned or owned by a restaurateur.

@@Proudtman NGL, I usually just pop open a can. Still, I've made them from scratch, plenty (I worked at Hardees when I was younger). Flour, butter, salt, baking powder, water. That's it. Buttermilk or honey are completely optional ingredients, IMHO. To me it's a little strange that these don't just exist, everywhere. The ingredients are in everyone's pantry, around the world. I would imagine. Just make it. Also, biscuit gravy is EXACTLY the same ingredients (minus the baking powder, add pepper & sausage [this will be seasoned w/ sage as well]) in different proportions. I think that finding the right sausage is going to be the most difficult part about making biscuits and gravy in the UK. Most Americans don't make their own sausage but I think you want a high fat, coarse ground pork sausage. Add sage, garlic, oregano and clove to taste.

A fried green tomato does not taste like a red ripe tomato. Don't eat a green tomato (not ripe-raw)....but, fried....it's so good! I do know that there are varieties of green tomatoes that can be eaten raw, but this is not any of those. A fried green tomato has to be a red tomato picked just before it turns red.

I know that I've said this before, but I feel the need to reiterate. Cornbread is best when you cut a slit in the top, stuff it with butter, & heat it up until the butter's melted. This causes the cornbread to soak all that butter up & just become sooo good.

Lewis, the first place they went was not traditional Southern but Southern fusion. It was a bougie meal compared to traditional. The 2nd place is what we call a "Mom & Pop" eatery or family run. It appeared much more the norm of traditional Southern. Okra is a vegetable that was brought to the South via our early African peoples and then heavily adopted into a staple of Southern food. Okra is offen a staple of island & African diets. Come to Tennessee & you will be swimming in Southern goodness.

"Is this true, that if you eat Soul Food, you start feeling a different sort of way." Soul food is rich, fried, sweet, dense, hearty, filling...all the things. It is food that has been cooked for generations by African American's in the South. The soul in the name refers to them, aka, they put their "soul" into their cooking, it's black culture, it's history by way of food. When you eat it, it's comforting, it reminds you of home, deep southern traditions, and family...and if you're not black or from the South, you can still experience that love in the meal.

That fried pork chop, fried okra, broccoli casserole, and collard greens meal that he ate is known as a "Meat and Three" A meat and three meal is one where the customer picks one meat and a choice of three side items at a fixed-price offering. Meat choices commonly include fried chicken, catfish, beef [country-fried steak, pot roast, meatloaf, brisket], pork [country ham, pork chop, pulled pork, etc.]. The 3 side items can be from a list of 1 dozen to 2 dozen options, such as: peas, black eyed peas, butterbeans, greens, fried okra, stewed okra, green beans, baked beans, coleslaw, hushpuppies, macaroni and cheese, cheese grits, cream corn, corn on the cob, stewed tomatoes, fried green tomatoes, mashed potatoes, sweet potato casserole, potato salad, squash casserole, carrots, etc., etc., etc.). To that, you automatically get a bread (choices are typically: biscuit, corn bread, or dinner roll) with which to sop up the juices and gravy. Wash it all down with a sweet tea.

For banana pudding, we usually put Nabisco Nilla waffers in it. They're probably what's giving him the bread texture, because they will tend to get soft and crumble within the pudding. Which is better than it sounds. Nilla waffers are little round vanilla flavored British biscuits. Used to eat them like a dry cereal when I was a kid, but they're best when served in pudding.

Some of the best regional foods in North America -- and anywhere, really -- are local places! If you're not familiar with a place, find someone who is kind enough to take you on a tour of where it is most safe, and isn't safe. The smaller towns are the most safe anywhere, typically. The beef rib? Consider this.... at $28 US per pound. It was smoked low and slow for probably 12 hours. The ribs are cut from, probably, 1/2 of a cow, then the rub is put on. The smokers are manned every hour, to add wood, check for proper temperatures and everything else it takes to make them tender and perfect. I'm fairly certain that Jolly was at that same place.

And the cook's friendliness, charm, and welcoming attitude to his customers is the southern charm and kindness that you hear about from the people living in the south in particular and it's real, not fake! They take pride in how much love and time they put into their food, like taking over 8 hours slowly cooking all that well-seasoned meat with that bark, the dark herb crust that you see all around the slices or chunks of beef on the bone. You'll experience all of this when you eat in the South (I live in Columbia, South Carolina) because that's just how people are here in the south so you'll just have to appreciate it, thank them, and best of all, enjoy their food they prepared with love and time and probably ol d old recipes handed down from their grandparents, etc! Be sure to make a point to go out of your way to thank the cook or chef on his food, and the more specific you are the more likely they are to believe you're being authentic.

@@L3WGReactsyou had a previous video about tailgating at college football games. Clemson University is about a 30 minute drive from where they’re at, and it’s in the foothills of the Appalachian Mtns. South Carolina is a very underrated place to visit. Greenville and Charleston are definitely two cities worth putting on your “must visit” list. Both are becoming top notch for their food culture. For context, Charleston is only a few hours from Greenville but has a completely different style of food in some regards because of its coastal location. If you love food, don’t skip a chance to visit any state in the South.

Collard and other greens often are just freshly picked from gardens, even though you can buy them in grocery stores. I've never been in the South, but I'll bet they grow wild lots of places now, too. When you get here, you need to try beans in different places. They'll knock your UK Heinz beans out of their socks. 😁 BBQ, smoked, sweet baked (baked beans with molasses and brown sugar are Nirvana), cowboy, umpteen different kinds. And that idea of renting a vehicle and staying with your subscribers in America? Stellar! Do it. Sounds like the best way ever to see the real country, and you'll have the best food ever. Poached eggs are dropped in boiling water kind of like frying an egg but they’re taken out before they fully boil so the yolk is still runny and the whites are soft, it should kind of melt onto the meat/biscuit. Traditional hollandaise sauce is usually kind of bland but in the south they like to add mustard, horseradish or Worcestershire to spice it a little. In this they added a lot of chopped green unions and some pico di gallo as well. Ps: fried green tomato’s are ssssoooooo good. PSs: okra is just a small vegetable, like zucchini but little.
