I highly recommend the book. The movie took some liberties (especially with the ending). Marcus Luttrell’s story is insane. He broke his back, got shot 15 times, bit his tongue in half, and Murphy’s last stand wasn’t as dramatic in real life but still just as gut wrenching because they were best friends. The BUDS chapter is absolutely insane. Also, fun fact: the real Marcus Luttrel is in the movie as the bigger Navy SEAL you see making fun of Shane Patton in the beginning.

If you’ve never seen it search “first ever recorded Medal of Honor” on KZbin, the drone footage of the most amazing thing I’ve ever seen on film, a SEAL team trying to rescue a teamate and one that’s left behind thought dead, his one man stand against 28 trained mercenaries , his fight, hand to hand combat and selfless sacrifice with 16 bullets and shrapnel wounds to save a QRF on a Chinook comming his way. It’s unreal to see and shows the resilience of our Special Forces War fighters. There an A list movie being made about it as we speak.

Without a doubt one of the best war movies ever made. I absolutely adore this movie. I watch it so many times whether that be fully through or having it on in the background. It is such an insane story that straight up I am so shocked we don’t talk about more. Which is why I’m glad this movie was made to tell it. Everything from the way it was directed, the cast, the action, an overuse of practical effects to make it seem more real.🙏

One of the best details, that I don’t think a lot of people notice, when Danny starts losing it you can watch as soon as they start taking fire again he’s instantly back up, locked in, banging away on his weapon. Instinct just takes over and he’s immediately back in the fight. Marcus actually described this in the book. He watched when Axe got shot (he was the first to get shot) and it went through and through his chest. Marcus said that Axe slumped forward for 2 seconds, took a breath like “well, that’s shitty,” and then was right back up returning fire. That gunfighter instinct is wild.

This is a heart breaking story but the truth is more heartbreaking and will cause alot of anger.i used to love this movie now I won't watch it again after being told the truth then researching it. There is a reason the afghan man and Marcus don't speak anymore, it's because he also told the truth. You guys know all about American media these days so.. I don't know how many people are aware there is actual footage from this . On the Taliban side. The movie told us they were caught because of goat shepherds but even in the movie they are surprised how fast the Taliban caught up with them. It's because they knew the whole time, they heard the helicopter drop them off! In the Taliban footage you can even hsr it yourself and then talking about it and preparing to go hunting. There wasn't hundred Taliban but only like 7-10 max. The hard truth is Marcus survived because he left his men. If you guys watch the footage listen you can actually hear the men yelling for Marcus to not leave them and to come back! And when the afghan man found him and took him he later on told that Marcus had full magazines and it was learned it was the same amount he left with. He didn't even fire one magazine... He left his men on that mountain....and then even more men died coming to rescue him... Alot of American hero movies are propaganda and yet no movies on Real heros. There are so many men that should have movies yet this horrible story gets a film and millions and millions to believe a lie....

I agree on the dialogue--particularly in moments when someone states something like "I got shot" and the response is "Living in the past, man." That communicates so much. It communicates the personality of the character, it depicts the mentality/attitude they have based on training, it wastes no words, and it doesn't allow for those usual "Hollywood moments" where they linger on a scene like that to "further establish the hero," but not lingering on that just tells someone like me that the director realized that "I don't need to further accentuate the fact that these guys are heroes. The audience is going to already know this anyway."

When I was in Army Infantry OSUT (One Station Unit Training, which means I did my basic training and Infantry school all in one go, at Sand Hill, Fort Benning, GA) once we were allowed to buy books or have family send us books, we devoured books whenever weren’t training. At first, we were only allowed to have military books, and one of the ones multiple of us owned was Last Survivor. We would read it, and then pass it on to the next guy to read that didn’t have a copy. I had a relative library, as my dad had sent me some of his copies of books, and the first time we went to the PX and were allowed to buy books, I bought like a dozen. This book had us all in our feelings for a couple weeks as everyone in my bay except me read it. I saw how everyone else was getting disheartened to agree by it. It’s a tough book to read, and a hard movie to watch. So I decided not to read it at that point in time. And when we left training, one of my duffels had a shoe box (from a pair of boots I bought while I was there) that was stuffed full of books, and some that didn’t fit, because I had so many. Watching this reminds me I need to pull it out and read it. Thanks for reviewing and watching it, and reminding me of my brothers and sisters I trained with. Some of them have now gone on to officially become Green Berets in the past couple months (my bunkmate told me who made it through after he got to talk with one of the guys who didn’t make it). Happy New Year everyone.

You’re right when it pertains to the unique bond. The brotherhood that those in combat share. I was a military wife of a combat infantryman. My husband retired after 23 years. He was among the first group to go to iraq in the army after the marines. The things he saw still are a part of him. There’s a lot he won’t share. But when I see him with those he was in combat with. There’s a bond I know I will never know or understand. Even after being his wife for almost 32 years and that’s ok. I’m just glad he has those brothers to help him carry the load. So many people will never grasp what our veterans go through. If only they knew a fraction of it. They’d at the very least respect our American flag.

My favorite scene out of this film is the discussion of "Eliminating the Compromise". So many morally grey areas that they just tip toe around that I wish popped up in more movies.

Listening to Marcus talk about this in speeches the tenacity of these 4 men to try to advance on these guys in the beginning shows true just warrior prowess and aggression. As a 4 man team to advance against the amount of men they fought is crazy to me. Ultimately what happened happened but they fought like hell

Peter Berg's "Americans in Crisis" trilogy (consisting of this film, Patriot's Day and Deepwater Horizon) is one of the best, and most respectful dramatic depictions of times of peril and heroism. Obviously these films need to have their Hollywood-ified moments (an inevitable part of filmmaking), but unlike someone like Michael Bay (as good of a movie as 13 Hours was), Berg raises the heroic actions and sacrifices and triumphs above all else. The actors they chose for this movie was perfect. Wahlberg, when given the right script can work magic and when given the wrong script with wonky direction gives you The Happening levels of awkward. I agree with you on Kitsch. It took me this and True Detective season 2, to really appreciate his abilities. Ben Foster and Emile Hersh... let's be honest, these two are some of the best character actors that I would honestly put up with the ranks of Phillip Seymour Hoffman, John Hawkes, Jon Turturro, amongst others. And then having Eric Bana round it out... if you haven't seen Munich, that man deserves more leading roles based upon that film alone. As you pointed out, the boy handing Marcus the knife, there is a similar moment in Patriot's Day (albeit with dialog being delivered as opposed to a knife being handed off), it brings a moment of levity to intense and overwhelming situations If you have not seen the other two, I highly recommend it.

Marcus Lutrell(The real guy) was on Rogans podcast. Dudes intense. I think the new MW2 Remaster did a level that was a lot like the sequence in this movie when their being hunted down the mountain. Pretty cool.

That scene where they threw themselves off a cliff was really filmed like that, the actors & stuntmen actually went all out, I think Corridor Crew did a segment on it! (Stuntmen react?)

You can actually see the real Marcus (Wahlberg’s character) a couple times in the movie. He’s the tattoo’d guy with sun glasses and beard at the base. And he’s on the helicopter that gets shot down

Every wound and injury you see on Mike, Axe, and Danny were taken from autopsy reports. Danny Dietz was shot 11 times not including any broken bones he had fron going down the mountain.

i'm a fan of the crying; it means you're human. if you haven't seen them already, i HIGHLY suggest only the brave, return to paradise, and the biggest little farm. the latter is a feel-good, lighthearted documentary i think both of you will love. 🙂

The making of this movie is amazing, actual Navy SEALs along with Navy SEAL Marcus Lutrell were the military advisors on this film, he wouldn’t make the movie unless it was as close to reality as it could possibly be to pay respect to his 3 Teamates and the QRF and Chinook helicopter crew that died. I’m hoping you show the tribute to all the war fighters at the end that shows their real photos and vidoes. Devastating but important to see. 💜 Rest in True Peace my Brothers! I’d advise everyone to search Marcus Lutrell speach about “Lone Survivor” he breaks down the real story and his injuries and man unbelievable he survived and the humble selflessness . Also the tragidy of the guilt he still feels for surviving. Support our Vets people. They gave SO much and the PTSD they live with for their service is tragic.

You should react to the Marcus Lutrell Lone Survivor speech. Just type that into the search bar. You get to listen to his recollection of the tumble down the mountain. Hear about the minor differences in the movie and the real events. These guys are bred for this, simply built different.
