If you have never seen it, you should watch Captain Phillips!!! It's a movie based on a true story and gives a weird insight into the minds of the people on the boat being taken over, Tom Hanks is the lead actor.

Pirates aren't typically interested in the cargo on a ship, they hijack the entire ship and demand a ransom for its release. That isn't going to work with a US military ship. What gets me is how they will go hundreds of miles into the Indian Ocean in those tiny skiffs. What could possibly go wrong? I knot = about 1.15 miles

I personally think the Zumwalt class destroyers are the gnarliest looking warships sailing the oceans and proud to say they were built at Bath Iron Works in Bath, Maine which is about 50 miles from where I live !

I, for some reason, read your comment too fast and saw "built at Bath Iron Works in Bath, Maine" some how as, "built by Bed, Bath, and Iron Works." . . . . I didn't know that was what the "Beyond" was in that store's name.

1 knot = 1 nautical mile per hour = 1.15 miles per hour = 1.85 kilometers per hour The USS Zumwalt is 600 feet (183 meters) long and displaces ~15,000 tons. That's bigger than a WW I era battleship (pre-HMS Dreadnought). It clearly doesn't look like a merchant vessel.
@Terrell0708 ай бұрын
They're called destroyers for a reason, don't mess with them. Their original role was to destroy smaller faster PT boats.

Real Quick Note. I worked with The D.oD. ( Department of Defense) for 21 years. I was a Hydraulic, Diesel and Electrical Specialist for The US Navy NAVAIR Division. There wouldn't even be a Scenario where a Somalia Pirate could even get close enough to that Ship. The Zumwalt ( DDG1000) has a Radar Cross Section the size of a Bumble Bee. By the time those Priates saw the Mast of the Ship, they would either be ( Not Alive) or they would be swimming back to shore. The Sophistication of this ship is Mind-blowing.
China might pay a pretty penny to acquire some of the electronic gear from the ship. Russia would too. US Navy warships are not civilian transport vessels. It's not like the old days of treasure fleets transporting gold and silver across the Atlantic Ocean.

Mostly the Somali pirates hop on Container ships and hold them hostage for ransom, often getting as much as $10Million. Zumwalt Destroyers cost $8B each

The Zumwalt is an unarmed testbed that failed. Three were built, dozens were cancelled. It is the costliest destroyer ever put to sea, and the entire class of ships was cancelled because its ammo is prohibitively expensive. IF this event happened, then it happened to another US ship or to another ship of a completely different country. Please look up the Zumwalt Class and then the USS Zumwalt itself.

I have a feeling like this is either AI read or the script has been AI generated. All they've done is listed the kinds of weapons on this ship and have theorized what they could do to pirates. While you "could" use a sea-to-land based Tomahawk missile to shoot at a ship, I don't see why the US would think that shooting a $2,000,000.00 missile at a blip on the radar without confirmation is the best choice of action. The Harpoon isn't too much better. It's an anti-ship missile, but it's "only" $1,500,000.00 per missile. I mean you can do that and have to explain to Somalia why you iced a bunch of boats that may or may not have been pirates with no actual confirmation on the situation or you can get confirmation and if they show aggression, you fire at them with a couple $75,000.00 5" rounds instead. Not a whole lot better, but it's the whole price comparison. I really don't think the original video did their due diligence in research and are just naming off a bunch of things they think the Zumwalt could do or they had an AI write this script. Any advanced warship has something that pirates would want, but I'm not sure they'd be willing to risk every one of them for; advanced weapon systems. You have more advanced tech, you become a bigger threat, meaning you can get away with more. Think of it in terms of taking it to the land. Bank robbers wouldn't want to have anything to do with a SWAT van, especially if it was guarding an armored pickup van....unless their foolish goal was to take the SWAT van and the contents inside of it so then they can easily hit armored cars and bigger targets. That's what it would be like for pirates to hit a warship. The only issue is that this video made a complete theoretical without making it realistic to any degree. Yes the pirates would be wiped out, but pirates in that area aren't known to be using radar and torpedoes. I don't know what kind of "advantage" the Zumwalt's stealth ability would actually play into this. It's like having the best anti-air tech out there and you're going up against an enemy with no air capability what-so-ever. Is it really worth boasting or are you just trying to overcompensate that what's done is done and it just happens to not be relevant to the current situation?

That "massive round you mentioned near the end was a 50 caliber round. The pirates would try to take control of the ship to take it hostage for ransom or kill the crew and sell it to one of our enemies who would pay top dollar for the technology.

Every bit of this, is pure conjecture. A group of Somali pirate boats wouldn't stand a chance against, even a current PT boat. The only way they can hope to do anything of value, is to try to find a cargo ship, who hasn't contracted with a private security firm, and, whose country of origin is not under protection by the US Navy. Because, if they are, and you manage to take control of that vessel, you will most certainly meet the type of Seals, who don't bounce balls on their noses, and clap their flippers together.

They should simply hide, lay down their arms or surrender. Fortunately, American revolutionaries (and hundreds of freedom movements across history) did not subscribe to your doctrine.

My husband is retired from the Navy. He spent a year dealing with these pirates and protecting ships passing through. They were animalistic and believed they were better than the military and invincible. They were rabid and never stopped. If one was killed they threw them out of the boat and kept on going.
